Excellent. I was thinking along those lines as well, not quite that vividly,
but 15 w 40 is going in shortly and I will be listening for lifter Noise.
Thanks to all. Nothing is quite as invigorating as a good oil thread.

Since you described the problem, I did several searches on the internet.
Based on the search results, it seems hydraulic lifters are a known issue
failure point for the engine, or at least one that is sensitive to oil
viscosity and wear, as a combination.
So, my thoughts are, based on what you've

Are we talking about the same rubber (viton?) o-rings?
These are about 1/4" in diameter.

You also need to change the o-rings on the center "bolt" in the oil filter
housing, they seal the oil path to the lifter gallery. Not in the new filter,
you have to get them separately. When they get old and shrink the oil pressure
to the lifters drops.

I had one in my '85 190D that clattered like it was trying to come apart.
After maybe 1,000 miles with M1 5w40 it quieted down. I was surprised that when
it did quiet down it was all of a sudden. One minute somebody was under the
hood tapping a drum, the next minute he was gone...

If oil won't fix it, new lifters from INA are about $10 each, plus the labor to
install them.

If thats the case its your problem.Curley and I might disagree about using
5w40 but 10w30 or really xw30 is NOT approved for a Mercedes diesel. In fact I
bet it doesn't carry a C specification at all...

Don't run SAE 30 in a 602/603/606 at 115°F.
In your climate, 15W50 should be fine.

Might be 10W-30. Not exactly sure cause I was using up two jugs I had sitting
around. I reckon I’ll change the oil this weekend and pay attention.
I suppose I should be more clear...ambient temps are 115F, engine temps are 95C
to 105C.
Maybe go old school Delo 15w-40...

You didn't say WHAT M1. You probably need a heavier weight. Are you
running 15w-50? Anything less , and your lifters will rattle at those
temps. I think this year (or quarter, as the case may be) the 15W-50
is in the truck oil label.
You maybe better off to start using amsoil or
My OM603 is making ridiculous lifter noise, at idle, after it reaches 95 to 105
degrees. I’m on my third oil change since I bought it. M1 is in it now.
This noise is borderline embarrassing at a stop light. It didn’t start this
until after the M1 was in it for about 200 miles or so.

...Any opinions on how long it will be before this stops (it didn't do it
when I was there.) 10,000 miles? Less?...
Far less, I would think. When my Porsche 944 developed startup lifter
clatter, Mobil 1 stopped it in 200 miles. And it wasn't the lifter but the
drainback check valve in the
