There has been a migration to requiring Course Packs. These are
reprints of articles and notes required in addition to the textbooks.
Interestingly, many of them are authored by the professors teaching
the course and come with a hefty copyright fee. Too bad professors
have not heard about the free
I had to pay some $100 for a course pack about a year ago. It was a
stack of 40 poorly photocopied sheets of paper, some of which were
illegible. It came with a disclaimer that said to protect the student
and professor, no refunds will will be issued after this course pack
has been opened.
More than likely I wrote the inventory management and copyright payout
software that was used when making that packet.
As someone intimate with the process, I will be the first to tell you it
is a SCAM. The problem is, as with many American industries, is that
there is too much pork in the middle

processes the credit card payments. We have both sides of the
transaction covered :-)
