Update: it's ALIVE!
Turns out
I've got a cracked screen on one of mine. I see the part is relatively
inexpensive, but the RR is pretty involved. I've torn down iPods so I have
all the tools, but looking at the extent of the tear down has convinced me that
we'll live with the crack for now...

It's not really that bad, I did one a couple weeks ago. Took maybe 2 hours.

You can buy replacement screens on eBay form any number of vendors - you'll
find the prices all seem to hover around $25, I believe. The better kits
contain the tools you need, spudger, hexaglobular screwdriver, etc. You'll
need some jeweler's screwdrivers and a clean work surface.
You can
Didn't have iCloud set up before, so last night I started that. This
morning I started to set up access via PC, but it requires Windows 7 or
later. Bummer. Will have to install iTunes on one of the home PCs instead.

Be careful.
I am in a quandary with the mother-in-law's iPad. brother in-law's girlfriend
set it up for her a couple of years ago, including an iCloud account. She
activated the Find My iPad feature. No one can remember the password and the
mother-in-law's email address has changed since
Any other choices for backing up contacts other than iTunes or iCloud?

Contacts syncs with the Mac address book, I think you might be able to
force it to sync with something else too.

My wife's iPhone took a bath, I'd like to try to revive it with a good
cleaning using isopropyl alcohol.
Battery performance had become miserable before it got wet, so I'm thinking
about getting a replacement battery.
Prices on Amazon seen to good to be true. $4? $7? Some are as much as
$13?

Thanks Mitch, we may have escaped with just a little inconvenience, but I
need to evaluate further.
Bought some tools, watched a couple YouTube videos, printed out an iRevive
screw chart, took it all apart and cleaned/rinsed/soaked liberally with
isopropyl alcohol, scrubbed off the two corrosion
Update: it's ALIVE!
Turns out the screen was dim because it's still water-logged. Removed the
back again, leaving the phone charger plugged in, and little by little the
water is clearing from the screen.
