Hi Ya’ll,
Does the TC Tensioner have a generic lifespan? With the typical diesel
combustion noise it’s hard probably to hear chain slap (I’m guessing) --
what’s the best way to check it?
Is it as easy to replace as the manual makes it look like?(91 300D 2.5T)
Thx
Larry
Easy peasy, screws right out (27 mm socket that works on the
injectors is just right).
Going back in make absolutely certain the aluminum seal ring stays
put, else you crimp it on one side and all the oil spews out. Don't
ask how I know that
Chain slap is almost always a worn chain

I remember a test for OM617 cars, maybe there is a test in the FSM?

What's the procedure for checking the Timing Chain stretch on my
W124 (eng. 602-962)? Same as I used on my '78 240D W123

Larry,
Attached is a nice description including the wear limit of 3 degrees (which
shall be stripped from the list?). I've found that you can get very precise in
lining up the marks by bending down and looking through the cam gear wheel and
sighting along the marks.

My '91 300D 2.5 Turbo has about 160,000 miles on it - while on a steady
diet of Mobil 1 for the last 60K, unknown before that.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Yup - it's the same.
