16 July 1969 puts me on special assignment in Hunza Valley and the
surrounding region. Electric there is two D cells in your flashlight, which
are likely dead. A mutton fat lamp will not power a TV... so I did not hear
of the moon landing for some months on my return to Ft Meade.

US astronauts!
But these cisgendered heteronormative patriarchal white male oppressors
were totally exclusionary, there was no diversity in the astronaut corps
or in the Apollo crews. Shameful period of our history.

Not to get off topic, but I can recall the nightly news with Walter Cronkite
and the black and white film footage of the Vietnam war. Nasty stuff.

I was only a couple months old when Neil walked on the moon, no memory. I do
remember watching a splash down, must have been one of the last flights. I also
remember news stories from the waning days of the Vietnam war.

Me too!
I was visiting my cousin over the weekend and she had NASATV playing as
sorta background decoration. They were showing various stuff, old films
of Apollo astronauts doing stuff, and one brief segment had a friend of
mine checking out his T-38 getting ready to go for a flight! So
I wouldn't be born for 7 more years...

I was stationed in Fiji as a Peace Corps volunteer. I don't recall the
purpose of my trip to that outlying island but it might have had some
connection with geological field work. Due to stormy weather the barge
didn't return for 3 weeks.

The trip took 5 days from Suva (capital city) on a very slow barge vessel
(250 miles IIRC). The islander families took turn cooking me dinner every
day, invariably octopus in coconut milk (local delicacy). It was great at
first but I tired of it very quickly

I listened live on SW radio on a barge in the middle of the Pacific Ocean
on the way to the outermost island in Fiji. I shall never forget it.
