I will get the front end checked over again for wear, etc. and hope for the
best. The front rotors have been turned a few years ago, but not
replaced. That could be the culprit. Will do that as well.
Thanks for all the advice.

MB rotors cannot be turned. To keep the unsprung weight down, they
are disposable. When they acquire a lip on the outer edge from wear,
get new ones. They are less expensive than getting them turned
properly, and cutting them down will make them too thin -- and they
then warp.

And they're no more expensive than aftermarket from the dealership.
Just put new rotors on my W140 a while back, and OE rotors were something like
$87/each my cost from the dealer.
I did, however, buy some nice ceramic pads from our sexy parts supplier to use
with those rotors.

Could be a bad rotor; I had some that looked fine but was a layer of good metal
over a sheet of rust...

It has been my experience that drivetrain vibration manifests itself by
vibration felt in the body, not steering.
Has your mechanic checked the front suspension closely for things like worn
control arm bushings, etc?
I would equate any shimmy or vibrations in the steering to front
I had a wheel on my 78 MGB that could not be balanced. I even had an old

balance it. I bought a new/used rim and all was
The shake can be felt in the steering wheel, just like wheel balance.
Then I highly doubt that the problem is to be found in the
rear of the car. Bent wheel?

Could be a loose wheel bearing, steering component, or front suspension
component. But first, swap the front and rear wheels and see what happens.
Mitch.
One thing I neglected to mention in previous message; when the mechanic was
doing his latest check, he had the car rear wheels jacked up and then put
in gear and revved it up. The rear wheels could be seen moving slightly up
and down and then he made some adjustments to the axle torque which he

Any driveline issues should be felt throughout the car if felt through the
steering wheel. If your shift bushings are snug, you should be able to feel them

the only time i had a blowout was on tires i knew better than to use but
some mechanic said they looked ok to him, so i went with it and had a
blowout a few weeks later
i'm pretty good with tires though. i'm actually quick to replace anything
that gives me the slightest cause for worry.

No, but I did replace a drive shaft in the '76 300D when the u-joint in the
middle started making noises and was notchy. Didn't want it to break while
driving ;-)
