I'll call that one a win. The best kind of fixes are the kind that cost nothing.

You missed my original message
It should.
The sender is nothing more than a thermistor that changes resistance as the
temperature increases or decreases.
That being the case, if you ground the wire to the sender I would expect the
gauge to go full scale.

Could be a bad instrument cluster ground. Does the temp gauge fluctuate when
you use turn signals or turn on the headlights?

Just got a thought on this. If the thermostat is old then it
might be an idea to change it. Sounds like it might be sticking
till it gets exercised a bit. May decide to stay closed soon.

I wondered if grounding one end would send the temp gauge high so I took a
jumper wire out with me. Fred had it backwards, the passenger side temp sensor
is in charge of the aux fan, the top side one is for the electo-magnetic fan
clutch. I can actuate either by grounding

Its a resistance device? I should be able to take a reading there. It'd be
awesome if the FSM had a chart. I'll need to find my copy of the FSM.

I would be quite surprised if the metal next to the temp sensor
was a different temperature than the sensor. So using your IR
thermometer you should be able to prove the accuracy of the
in-car measurement.

The 601/602 engine thermometer sender is on the thermostat housing. Just a
single contact sticking out, check it and the socket for clean contact.
If it's not that, it is meter and ground tango time.
Have fun.
