We left the exhaust/turbo attached to the head when we pulled it, removed it
on the bench, re-assembled before mountung the head on the block. Seemed the
easiest way to me. Just watch the oil supply line as you lift the assembly -
easy to get it caught and bend it.

You need to disconnect it from the side of the block. It's a larger steel
tube.

Remove the fitting from the block and make SURE it stays out of the
hole and doesn't hang on anything.
I bent my old one all to and back, but otherwise it was easy.
Watch for broken exhaust manifold studs. The gasket is a spring type
and must be tightened to the correct torque, NOT
The oil feed line screws into the block toward the rear just above
the coolant drain cock.
Something like a 19 mm pipe fitting if I remember correctly.
There is a drain line straight down from the bottom of the turbo --
get new o-rings for it to prevent leaks. I think there is one in the

No need to remove the exhaust pipe that replaced the trap oxidizer,
as you CANNOT reach the oil line from above, even then -- it's tucked
up below the manifold.
Easy to see from underneath, and you should really drain the block
anyway to prevent getting coolant in the oil when you take the

I'll be, Loren was right! ;)
Machine shop where I took the head immediately advised the same cause for the
pitting - wrong coolant. Some of the pitting may be too close to the seal ring
for one cylinder, in which case they may advise welding some new metal in place
and then taking it flat.
