I filled the S430 the other day. Full 23.3 gallons and the computer thought I
would get 500 out of the tank. On the freeway it thought it would be closer to
600. That is still better than the 250/ 20mpg I was getting out of the Toyota
van.

Six big ones might be a bit high, but they really are wonderful cars.
That one has incorrect aftermarket exhaust, you'd need to replace it
with a correct TimeValve one (which will last forever), but otherwise
seems pretty nice.
Loved mine, but it's gotta go away, too rusty to make it
I have never had one of these that was not a parts car and have always wanted

My Dad sold one just a couple years ago, about half that price. No rust at
all, but badly re-painted so it looked shabby. He replaced the interior
and all the chrome, but didn't want to invest in the paint job.

Hard to say without having a good look at it, if as described 6k is not
far off the mark, the 108/9s are going up in price lately, as they have
the classic Merc look and are still very usable as a daily driver.
It's a V8 with steel suspension, so no carbies or air suspension to
spend up on.
Air
very possibly

It seems in the last couple of years the market has really picked up for
these, over here there are some crazy prices being asked for them,
especially the coupes.
AU$20k for a good 3.5 sedan is not unheard of.

Sure it is... if its really 99% rust free.
I just sold this:

for much more, and there was nearly a bidding war on the car. And I didn't
even list it for sale yet.
W108s are hot, and they're going to rise. Finally.

all that torque and a top end of 125 mph, what more can you ask for?
Mine was a pain to drive on the highway -- always wanted to go 90

Yeah but you got to compare it to the 3.5 and 2.8, neither of which are
super efficient.
You also got to compare it to other cars of that era, none of which got
good mileage, apart from some of the Diesel ones but even they are crap
when compared to modern electronic Diesels.
A 108/9 with a
One probably does not own one for the mileage though.

Aaah now your talking like an S class owner.
You'll have to get Reggie to drive you around but you should get an SEL

The transmission itself is overall fine, I just don't care for the missing
first gear. (That is, the 3 speed's ratio on first is similar to the 4
speed's in second). On the highway its grand, but around down its pretty
sleepy.
I've never driven a 3.5 with the 4 speed fluid coupling trans. I
Yes that is my thought. If you want mileage get priapsis.

It was quite common to drop a 615 in these in Germany -- lowered the
tax rate and gave decent performance with much better milage.
It is better than a comparable Cadillac or Oldsmobile -- in that era
they got six mpg, as low as 4 if you drove hard. Huge honking things
that rolled like
