The gauges were only wonky on one occasion that I know of, which was the
impetus for me to get under the car and replace the harness since I knew the
conductors were exposed throughout the harness.
On my way home from work on Monday I had the low oil level light flicker a
number of times, and
You would be better off going to a major electric distributor and buy
some Machine wire (type MW) It is made with insulation designed to
withstand heat, oil, and vibrations, such as the environment in the
engine compartment.
Now I have the harness out of the car.
Another discovery: MB has
I was able to source control cable at my Ace, which has a rating similar to MW.
It's also got a very high conductor count, which not only increases surface
area, but makes it more flexible.
This harness is heavily shielded and covered with an insulating jacket as well
as convoluted tubing I

So now it's shower time and then off to my local Ace Hardware to source
some replacement wire of the proper gauge and length.
I would interject that a new harness is around $350 from MB, hence the
desire to rebuild it

Well, after a few weird flickers of the low oil level light this
Got the harness rebuilt, but I'm not totally pleased with it. Taking care of
the wires and various terminals was no big deal. Where the old wires enter the
bulkhead connector has me concerned.
All four wires enter within about 0.5 mm of each other, and the insulation on
most of them flaked
Sounds good. I've done essentially the same thing and had no later
problems.

Sounds like you'll be fine. I have used a product call liquid electrical
tape in similar situations and never had a problem.

The deed is done, and no fuses blew nor were there sparks with the exception of
when I reconnected the battery.
The rebuilt harness went in fairly easy and there were no fasteners remaining
when I was done.
Since the harness is strapped down to the point of immobility, I don't expect

Ok! So there is an improvement in gauge behavior?
