Cicada killers
they sound like Cicada Killers - they hunt and kill cicadas place an
egg in their body and their baby feeds off the cicada. Can't recall
if the hornets kill them 1st or not...
I think they are called Japanese wasps or something

Paper wasps around here are very territorial. They will attack from simply
walking too close to an infested car.

I stepped on a yellow jacket nest once, coming down off a ladder that I

showed me their displeasure by stinging me a few times.
A little rotenone powder settled their hash!

I was putting up some wire fencing on the posts of a horse corral

I went downtown to the West End today (D.C. neighborhood) and passed by a
raised garden sited between an apartment bldg. and the sidewalk, about 60'
long x 15' deep, with the sidewalk edge 3' above ground slanting upwards at
about a 30 degree angle to where it met the building. It was positively

Hey, Mr. Organic Gardener - you should be telling us about the wasps,

quantity. Someone told us that the ground hole maker buzzers
(wasps/hornets)
Cicadas.

It wasn't Cicadas.
It really sounded like massive swarms deep in the woods, non visible.

Those wasps are what I am allergic to. Nasty, aggressive, territorial and
just plain evil creatures. They are so common on cars that sit around for
any time here that it is like dodging life seeking bullets in a war for a
guy who is allergic to them to be able to work on old cars. Seriously.
The paper wasps are actualy beneficial insects. I have seen them feasting
on caterpillars in my vegetable garden. Their nests are affixed to the
carport roof; I have never been stung by them (fingers crossed) or by the

If not, ask your doctor for a prescription for one next time you have an
appointment.
It could save your life.
