Let me put it put this way when the colitis flares up I have much more blow

My car, 1990 300SEL, has a popping rubbing noise in the front end. I
took it my Indy and it is the left control arm bushing (I forget whether
it was the upper or lower). That is not such an unusual concern on
126, so I didn't think too much about it. But, I was looking through

not steering box my experience is that if the sound is there when turning it
is the lower ball joint, which need replaced about 150k miles. The other
popping noise that is common is the guide bushings, aka brake control

You take off the panel from the hatch (not hard -- some screws) and then
take off the motor/gear box assembly (not hard -- a coupla bolts) after
removing the wiper arm. You can take the motor off the gear box, and
open up the gear box, see what is binding it up or if the motor is
burned out.
