If you have a big enough hill, you can do it with an automatic 240D too.

I made about 50 pizza deliveries one night without a starter on my Citation.
There was a minor (maybe 6-8) rise leading up to the storefront. I could bump

Also possibly a blown head gasket on the 140 at the oil chamber in
front of the #1 cylinder. It's a known weak spot. Your symptoms match
mine when the gasket blew. If that is the problem and you continue to
crank the car, you will bend the #1 connecting rod. Remove all the
injectors and crank the engine until you start building up oil
pressure. If you see an oil mist coming from the #1 cylinder, that's
 the culprit.

would rotate around to make sure plug is tight in converter. It was
loose. Tightened it up, no more leak. WHEW, dodged a bullet. Fluid at
correct level, tranny pulls into drive and reverse instantly. Take it
out for a drive, wont shift past 2nd. If you get on the pedal, will
drop to first, and wont upshift, but if you put it in neutral then back
in drive, will go to 2nd but no further. Crap. More on this issue at a
 later date.

Was in the middle of messing with that when Regina (who has been having
contractions all afternoon) calls dr office (obgyn). Our dr who is in
the military was called to service overseas, get this, he is with Dick
Chaney right now. For what I dont know. Dr on call says come to
hospital to be checked out. I come in get cleaned up, we hop in the 140
and head over to Owasso to the hosipital. We get there about 5:30 they
check her out. She is still 3.5 weeks early so they give her whatever
to try and stop it. Not working. Later we move down to a delivery room.

At this point, I decide to go get something to eat real quick. I run
down in the 140 to get a burger. Afterward, getting on the highway in
the 140, all the sudden something lets go, I have non-turbo like
performance, and the most MASSIVE smoke screen you have ever seen in
your life. Its so bad both sides of the expressway have no visibility.
It was BAD!!. Get up to the next exit and get off. Limping it back to
hospital. Pretty soon oil light comes on, its loosing oil quick. Get
it in the parking lot, it runs fine, sounds fine, just smokes like
nothing you have ever seen. Im thinking the turbo seal let go. Time
for a new turbo I guess. Crap. Its still at the hospital, Im back
home, getting ready to head back over there with the trailer.

So I get back to hospital. Things progress. At 9:53 my first son
Spencer is born, 5lb 14 oz. Labor went fine (on labor day), no problems
there. Everything was fine with the baby, then he starts getting to
where he stops breathing. Crap. To make a long story short, he had to
be taken via chopper to a much larger hosipital in Tulsa. There he was
put on a resirator because he quit breathing completely on his own. He
has been there all night while we remained at first hospital. Anyway, I
got around over there to seem him a little while ago in ICU. While
there, they had adjusted it down so far next step was to take him off
it. So they took it out. So far he is breathing on his own, but still
takes spells of it going up, then down etc. So he may have to go back
 on it.

Anyway, thats how my day went yesterday and today. More updates later.
If I am working on a car deal with you, I will be continuing
 discussions soon.

That is quite a story. Congratulations on your son. He will be in our

Since we are writing about babies, I can tell you all about our situation. My
wife and I have been trying for a LONG time. So, we go see a fertility
specialist. They put my wife on Clomid and do all the tests. Evidently one
of the ovaries is blocked. The clomid is working because when they did the
mid-cycle scan they found 3 follicles ready to go. They all measured very
well (I don't know what most of this means). So, now within 24-36 we do the
deed. According to the doctor my tests were off the charts and the marines
are very high in number, and excellent swimmers. Here's the thing, the
follicles measure very well and are considered very viable. So, I am
freaking out that we are going to have triplets. HELP! Anyone have one of
those LWB 123's. Can you put three car seats in one those? Does anyone
have experience with these fertility drugs or fertility problems. It helps
 just to write about this.

Yea, I thought about that. Mostly, it just helped for me to write about
it. Not really something you talk about it. So, I thought I would send it
 to people I barely know.

The ironic part of that is that this community of Mercedes enthusiasts
probably knows more about each other than our closest friends. We are, even
with differences in politics, religion, and other topics, a VERY tightly
knit group. I guess that would make us all friends, even though most of us
 have never met in person.

Well, this car has used oil since I got it. Just assumed bent rods and
would put a new engine in it down the road sometime. I then started to
suspect turbo because there is NO blowby, and I keep getting things like
the ALDA gooped up from oily crap. Though it might be oil from the
turbo. Anyway, will be getting into it soon.

Mercedesshop group a W140 cheap. Smoked like crazy (fogged things

While I doubt the ability of about any young male to be a totally
trustworthy gentleman, mothers generally loved me - perhaps because they
couldn't read my mind [or that I seldom acted on those teenage fantasies]?
It is interesting to notice what difference a few years make, though. My
darling wife met me when she was 15 and I was 19. I met her when she was
17
and I was 21 [Summer camp she attended and I worked at.] That couple of
years made it a different thing. 33 years married now and she can still
trust me. Her mom was right, though IIRC marriage and children was not
the
first thing on my mind when we met...

I am seriously concerned about the way the US is going. We have an
energy-intensive economy but many (formerly most) people were not willing to
drill for our own energy so we bought most of our oil from people that don't
like us much. We exported our manufacturing because we were afraid of
pollution and Americans were unwilling to get their hands dirty or to work
for realistic wages. Now we're importing workers (from field hands to
doctors) because Americans are too lazy to do those jobs or to get the
required education. How many native-born Americans have jobs that produce
actual wealth (something of value) these days? This can only lead to two
outcomes (1) we sell off the country piecemeal until there is nothing of
value left or (2) the new Americans (the Asians, Mexicans, and the few
natives still willing to work) revolt and tell all the freeloaders where to
 get off.

Memory check-center vents on a 79 240D are for fresh air and AC-not heat?

Under some circumstances the center vents in a 124 will in fact
produce heated air by design. Some who should know better have made
claims to the contrary (RIP Marshall!), but it's right there in the
FSM---the section is entitled Function of automatic climate control
system or some such. I have observed said behavior on my 124s,
particularly on fall or spring days where it's cool in the morning
then warms up, and the ACC starts the day by heating the cabin, then
transitions gradually to cooling.

However, most of the time you get either cooled or straight outside
air (depending on whether you're in EC mode or not) from the center
vents, just like on the 123, 114/115, and 107. I'm not sure about the
126 or 201 chassis.

I would think any indy worth his salt would know all this! (But
sometimes there are strange gaps in their understanding of the cars
they work on. An Audi specialist I know, who did some great work on
the '86 4000 quattro I used to have, consistently described the manual
differential lock switch on that car as turning on the
four-wheel-drive despite the fact that first-generation quattros are
_always_ in four-wheel-drive mode.)

Only opportunity I've ever had to do that trick was on a

had any jumper cables, and the girl needed to go somewhere in a hurry.
They were about to give up and call for a tow when I offered to
roll-start it. The hardest part was muscling the steering wheel
around without the power assist! (Why is a car with nonfunctional
power steering so much harder to steer than one with no power steering
at all? Parasitic drag, so to speak, from the hydraulics?) Anyway,
the van was at the top of a Seattle hill, so it was easy to get up
enough coasting speed to do the trick and start it, once I got away

Those 3 AM feedings are a great reason to support breast feeding, as dad
really can't do much more than offer to hold the 'bottle.' Wait a minute.
I did all the diaper changes in the middle of the night and in the morning
before taking the kid in to mom... Now that I think about it I got in such
a habit of waking up and heading to the kids rooms before I was really awake
that I had all the 'up at night' duty for many years. My darling wife had
some hearing then and later admitted she would pretend to be asleep until I
woke up and went in to see what the kids needed.
You might want to think about that whole situation...

Some of the cars _can't_ emit warm air out the middle. The

Re: [MBZ] Best fix ever

2008-09-03 Thread Jim Cathey
(Why is a car with nonfunctional power steering so much harder
to steer than one with no power steering at all? Parasitic
drag, so to speak, from the hydraulics?)

Some, but I'd bet more is because the system is designed
for assist, and so has a smaller steering wheel and/or
higher gearing in the steering box, making for 'more
responsive' steering. So long as the boost is there.

Same reason a car designed for AC but with it broken
is much hotter to drive on a summer day than one that
was never designed for AC. Usually such cars have much
better vents. Both my Falcon and the Chevy pickup are
pretty tolerable on a summer's day, whereas any of our
MB's are not. The older vehicles have hefty floor
vents and wing windows. Even the Frankenheap, which
never had AC, is a car (115) designed to support AC.
It has the wing windows, but without the floor vents
you're screwed.

2008-09-03 Thread Christopher McCann
Friend Charlie bought a 5 speed 124 manny tranny off a Euro gasser and wants to
put it in his '87 300TD.

BUT, he is not sure how many bolts are on the engine (603) flywheel. He said it
is going to be 6 or 12, probably. Frankly, I forget how many are on the tranny,
I think 6...so he is hoping the answer will be 6.

I found pics of various flywheels (Schwungscheibe und Schwungrad) on ebay.de,
but none for a 603. It seems that some diesel engines have 12 bolts on the
flywheel.

A trip to the EPC would answer this question, but I have not subscribed yet.

had it on the shelf for $12.

Everything else I've purchased for the new Achieva was obtained cheaper through
Amazon.com or gmpartsdirect.com (the latter is actually a Pontiac dealer in
North Carolina, they sold me Delco shocks cheaper than Rock, and a GM fog lamp
with bulb for the same delivered price as a TYC without bulb from Rock)
Both RockAuto and GMPartsDirect have very low prices and very high shipping.
I've been happy with purchases directly from Amazon and from Parts Direct
ordered via Amazon. Amazon is giving free one month memberships in Amazon
Prime,
so you can get free two day shipping if you actually buy it from Amazon.

Mitch.

Spray 3M - it's so much easier than anything else (not that I have ever
tried anything else, to be honest)..

Wait until the new pad dies and you want to scrape off that polyurethane
 and
glue on another pad. At least you didn't use Liquid Nails, that stuff's
 invulnerable.

That's the rub here - you don't know if you're not getting worse
because of the stuff, or not. I don't think it would make a difference
in the short term.

So you're just taking Condroitin, or neither now?

There are two 3M adhesives -- 8090 and I think 8070. You want the
high strength one, the regular won't hold the pad up when it gets hot.

I used one can for two pads, still holding, although the pad on my
brother's car is falling apart again.

The 3M product can be removed (when the time comes) using a solvent sold by
3M and a lot of paper towels and some patience. If you do need to remove
one of these on the car, use a drop cloth over the motor and fenders to keep
the gunk off them.

There must be more than one kind of trim adhesive, theres a thread on
Mercedes shop about using 8090. I'll see if I can get a can of that.
It'll be interesting, one hood I can do in the garage (the 240D as its not
yet installed) the other (the 190D will have to be done on the car...

I used 3M super trim (or something) adhesive - worked great on two 124
hoods.

What is the preferred hood pad adhesive?

Re: [MBZ] Its a matter of definition

2008-09-03 Thread Chuck Landenberger
I'm taking neither. I was taking Glucosimine w/condroitin and the
system technology brand also has Vitamin C.

I've got a back that is severely screwed up. Hurt it in '78. Had a
fusion of L3/L4 but I still have movement between the two. Am
looking into some minimally intrusive surgical alternatives. For
many years I took squite large doses of Ibuprofin (1200/1800 mg/day)
and about 3 months ago, I started having nosebleeds with no warning.
I've stopped the Ibuprofin and have had no recurrence of the
nosebleeds. As to arthritis, I have no joint swelling altho my
doctor says I have the affliction/disease...

For now I just hunker down and do things that require back movement
with in little bits. Bending over when washing dishes really sucks...

Just an authentic teutonic approach Put up with it..!!!

Take care,

Chuck
