Well, there's an adjustment on the compressor bracket that allows very simple
release of the belt. Same for the power steering bracket, and similiar for the
alternator.
Changing the belts on a 240D is a 20 minute job, armed with the knowledge of
what to turn, and what to not turn. And

I am the Tulsa operations manager for Dealer Specialties
(www.dealerspecialties.com). This company used to be owned by the old
Trader Publishing (which I worked at for years) till the split with Cox
happened. At that point, we all went to Cox (you guys know that story)
and this company went
this one has I think 280k maybe. I suspect its going to need a new oil
pan though, no oil showing on the dipstick and looks like the pan got
scraped pretty good and may be leaking. Cant tell for sure yet.

Are you sure you have the proper sized belt?
When changing the AC Belt on my 78 240D there is a idler pulley at the front
of the cyl head (near radiator) which is loosened and then the AC belt is
removed. No other bolts are loosened. The same pulley is used to adjust
the tension.

As Richard said, you are missing the adjuster for the a/c compressor.
Many of these don't have an adjustment on the compressor at all,
just an idler pulley on a rotatable arm that you twist into place
with a wrench and lock down.

Is this a W123 240d or a W115 240D? even within the W123 run, things were
changed. My '81 300cD had the jack screws, but the '78 300's all had AC
idler pulleys and that star washer adjuster for the alt. The PS pump was
the same on all of them and had the same jack screw into plastic threads
A lot of companies now are requesting on you giving a 10 rating on customer
satisfaction cards-e.g Hilton. Also one MB dealer here- www.viti.com asks
you to talk to them if you can't give them a perfect rating rather than turn
in a less than stellar number.
