Price is much higher than I remember! Diagnostic procedure is 54-0254,
and basically consists of checking the gauge reading when sender is
disconnected (open circuit = 3 bar) and then shorting to ground (ground
= zero bar). If the gauge fails this test, then problem could be in
circuit or gauge. If gauge passes, then the sender is the culprit.

Sender is screwed into the side/bottom of the oil filter canister,
rather a pain to reach from above on an '87, may be a cleaner shot from

Can the oil pressure sender be cleaned? Mine always registers north of

How do I test the washer fluid level sensor? I was trying to find a

Grease in the hub can only come from the wheel bearing or the outer axle joint,
and probably not the outer joint, since it would have to travel through the
bearing to show up on the brakes.

Time to change the wheel bearing -- pull shaft, unscrew retainer, drive out
bearing, press new on int, re-install axle.

Re: [MBZ] Hard start problem returns

2010-06-15 Thread MG
Mike, Don't know if this will help but... I had/have the same
problem with my 6.5 diesel in the Chevy van. Doesn't happen in
the winter but starts in the spring and summer down here in Fla.
Didn't happen all the time either. I finally came to the
conclusion that it had to do with the fuel and where I bought it.
I think that some fuels have a lot more light volatiles in them
and so when you shut the motor off the heat under the hood will
cause a vapor lock condition in the injection pipes. The support
in your case is that when you bleed the line the vapors come out
and the engine starts right off. Same happens if you wait long
enough for everything to cool and the vapors to turn back to a
liquid. The proof is to leave the hood open after you stop the
engine and come back an hour or so later and see if it starts
without any problems. At least that seems to have worked for me
on the van. It's too hard to get to the injector lines to bleed
them so I haven't tried that though I may do that some time just
to see if that works on the 6.5

No. I mis-spoke when I said hose.

The fuel line is part of the gauge sender thing that's attached
to the top of the tank, as I recall. It was accessible from
inside on my car with the 3rd seat. I have not looked at one

2010-06-15 Thread Rich Thomas
OK start at the other end and follow the fuel line back from the engine
to the tank. At some point there will be a rubber hose attached to the
hard fuel line, which will then go into the tank via a fitting at the
bottom of the strainer filter. Or as someone mentioned, take the return
line off, divert it to a jug or something, and run the engine until the
tank is drained.

The 123 wagon tank is analogous to the underbody fuel tank in the
110, 111, 112, 108, 114 and 115 tanks, (pre-1977 or so) Drain is a
large female hex in the middle of the bottom side of the tank. The
screen is inside the drain plug. All three fuel lines go into the
tank, and the inlet comes from inside the screen, then through the
tank to the front of the tank, where it exits, as Philip says.

Thanks Everyone,
I will contact Indy to get this job done.

Grease in the hub can only come from the wheel bearing or the outer

travel through the bearing to show up on the brakes.

Time to change the wheel bearing -- pull shaft, unscrew retainer,
drive out bearing, press new on int, re-install axle.

Might not be a job you want to do at home.

Brake hub?

What's that?

The wheel bearing is sealed. No easy access. A hard job that
requires special tools.

The axle shaft has oil inside the boot.

At the differential, there is a seal for the axle shaft. Seal
is easy to change - but the axle shaft has to come out first.
This involves a bit more, but it's not especially hard.

Mike, Don't know if this will help but... I had/have the same

happen all the time either. I finally came to the conclusion that it
had to do with the fuel and where I bought it. I think that some
fuels have a lot more light volatiles in them and so when you shut
the motor off the heat under the hood will cause a vapor lock
condition in the injection pipes. The support in your case is that
when you bleed the line the vapors come out and the engine starts
right off. Same happens if you wait long enough for everything to
cool and the vapors to turn back to a liquid. The proof is to leave
the hood open after you stop the engine and come back an hour or so
later and see if it starts without any problems. At least that seems
to have worked for me on the van. It's too hard to get to the
injector lines to bleed them so I haven't tried that though I may do
that some time just to see if that works on the 6.5

Oops, I didn't notice that it needs the windshield. A windshield for a protected

Not that it matters. I'm sure it's one of the 99.9% that are owned by idiots who
confuse armor with insulated glass. In that case, it's worth at least $400 for

Re: [MBZ] W123 coarse fuel screen RR

2010-06-15 Thread andrew strasfogel
So now I am worried. I thought all I had to do was unscrew the coarse
screen filter with my 22mm hex tool (allen) but it appears the end of the
filter that is inside the tank will be attached to some sort of fuel hose
that i will need to disconnect in order to R/R the filter. Or maybe not.

On Tue, Jun 15, 2010 at 4:43 PM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote:

The 123 wagon tank is analogous to the underbody fuel tank in the 110, 111,
112, 108, 114 and 115 tanks, (pre-1977 or so) Drain is a large female hex
in the middle of the bottom side of the tank. The screen is inside the
drain plug. All three fuel lines go into the tank, and the inlet comes from
inside the screen, then through the tank to the front of the tank, where it
 exits, as Philip says.

 You wrote

There is no hose on the wagon. The filter screen
is simply part of a huge plug that screws into the bottom of
   the fuel tank.

   LarryT wrote:

Then how does the fuel come out and get to the engine? I have
a spare fuel tank fitting in my garage - just looked at it -
in the center should be a attachment for a fuel line to go to
the engine - this is the main fuel feed. There's a return line
  elsewhere.

The sedan is different than the wagon.

On a sedan, the bottom of the fuel tank is above axles.
On the wagon, the bottom of the fuel tank is the lowest point
under the body between the bumper and the differential -
analogous to the spare tire well on the sedan.

So on the sedan, the fuel outlet is a hose attached to the
middle of the strainer plug unit.

On the wagon, it would promply be torn off! So the outlet
pipe is actually inside the tank. It run from the strainer to
the front of the tank and out through the side.

Earlier I made an error in my correction of my previous error.
Making a mistake when correcting an error is, well,
embarrassing... The fuel supply line is not with the guage
sender, but it's own port low on the front of the tank.

Perhaps your tank has a drain plug? But it won't have a
filter screen on it - no need for one.

The plug for the strainer looks a bit like a drain plug -
but it has as screen in it. It is actually a two layer outlet
port. This is sort of like a banjo bolt. The screen has two
sealing surfaces. The upper one seals to the tank body. The
downstream side of the screen is the space between the upper
and lower seals. This consists of a pipe wrapping around the
hole - but with the side facing the hole removed. The pipe
leads out to the port at the front of the tank.

I picture could work so much better than words for this...

They have two panes of glass, with a space between them, filled with argon
gas or something. For those who think they're bullet proof, they haven't
seen real bullet proof glass. Or, they figure they're bullet proof, but
only rated for BBs at 100 yards or something.

What are the chances of a car being armored, and then rolling around on very

No.

 Or maybe not.

Yes.

When you unscrew the drain/screen thingy on the bottom of the
tank, any fuel still in the tank will run out, follow your arm
down and get you shirt soaked.

But there are no hoses that need to be disconnected. Unscrewing
the plug/screen also disconnects in from the feedline - which is
a hard pipe, not a hose, leading out the front of the tank.
