I almost bought a Euro 280SEL 126 that had the 5 speed and was

The last time I had issues like this (not on an MB mind you) it was a
grounding issue. I ended up attaching a new ground wire to the body at
each turn signal and all was well for the rest of the time we owned the
vehicle.

Had a similar problem in '83 300D that turned out to be the four way flasher
(hazard) switch which I replaced. Someone else on the list took one apart,
cleaned it with Deoxit, and that fixed it.
