Some states have farm registration. You could claim tree farm.
Restrictions vary but doing hauling for farm should be ok.

Re: [MBZ] Boxford?

2014-07-10 Thread Curt Raymond
We have an annual inspection for everything. I suspect bigger trucks have a
different one but I don't know at what point. I think through the 1 ton they're
still considered pickup trucks.

My folks have done pretty well and are at the point where they are ready to
enjoy it if dad wants an big truck we get a big truck. :) Really what we need
is a larger dump trailer. We hauled gravel in May with the little dump cart
behind my Cub Cadet. While the Cub Cadet is in a whole different class than any
garden tractor you can buy today it was still over matched by a full dump cart.
For its part the cart bent a little more on each load and I was surprised we
didn't blow the tires. We loaded it with the excavator so it was no problem to
load but kind of difficult to limit yourself when you're loading.

Actually truth be told the road lasted 10 years before it really fell apart.
Last fall dad had a guy bulldoze it back into the right shape. If we had to pay
somebody every 10 years it'd be no big whoop compared to keeping a truck and
little loader tractor and hauling a couple loads of gravel every year...

Re: [MBZ] adjusting valves

Rick, thanks, that's the video I was thinking of.

I had the author wrong, and down in the comments is one from the author
about turning the valve spring retainer to adjust the valve clearance at
the TIGHTEST (?) point. That didn't make sense to me, I would imagine that
the retainer would trend to find the most loose point and settle there.

Re: [MBZ] Road trip!

2014-07-10 Thread Rich Thomas

Yeah I looked at that too. Sweet.

I was over launching my kayaks a few weeks back and there was this
really hot chick maybe mid 30s who was putting a coupla kayaks into a
tall long Sprinter van. There were 2 or 3 boys around who appeared to
be hers. The van was outfitted with seats and then racks in back for
toys, including the yaks and bikes below and some other stuff (cooler,
etc.) It was all made of oak, she said some friend fabbed it up for
them. I forget where they were from, but she said they did lots of road
trips and with the boys and all their impedimenta the thing fit their
needs well. I was drooling (about the van).

Heck if you're going that far you'd might as well go for a 1 1/2 ton F-450.

Dad and I have talked about getting an old dump truck for camp. Its  been
interesting looking at trucks from the 30s-60s. Generally speaking for the
price of a pickup I can have a 1 1/2 - 5 ton truck thats in better condition
with half the miles. People don't want the big trucks I guess. Dad is looking
into building a new garage to house all these toys in. If he keeps it up we'll
have to buy the farm next door just to keep stuff on.

Boy how I'll have to rationalize that. :)

But the frame surrounding the burners appears to be stainless steel or
else is chrome plated.
And yes, I think alcohol is preferred on a boat. Some use propane but it
can be dangerous as it will settle in the bilges if it leaks and might
be accidently ignited.

Its a marine stove because it burns alcohol which doesn't give off dangerous

Actually, what you said is true of compressed natural gas, as opposed to LP
(aka propane), which is heavier than air. The main advantage of alcohol in
marine applications (vs Diesel or kerosene) is that water extinguishes
alcohol fires pretty well. On the other hand, alcohol does not burn as hot,
it's costly per BTU, and the flame is invisible in sunlight. Also,
pressurized systems burn hotter but are considerably less safe than
wick-style systems. Stoves on cruising monohull sailboats are almost always
gimbaled.

Fiddled with the gear shift until it managed to start, fiddled some

Drove it behind the house and into the shop. Very lucky because working

Google "Mercedes shift bushing replacement" and there were a coupla
sites with piccies and details. Nothing particularly exotic and the
bushings are cheaper than shipping. I got them off Amazon with free
shipping but I think Jabba can get them too, probably cheaper for the
part but more on shipping.

Many thanks, folks. I seem to remember that a special tool is needed

replace those same bushings on the '83 240D stick-shift without
success, but still have the bushings which might be the same since
both cars are '83 123s.

There are two sets of plastic bushings. One set at each end of the round

problem (parking pawl) in the transmission.

Re: [MBZ] Car rolls back in "park"

2014-07-10 Thread LarryT
as others have mentioned, the shifter bushings have fallen out. I
believe there are2 or maybe 3 of them. Each is just a hard plastic
grommet that snaps into a hole in the linkage. The parts are only a
couple of $$s each but accessing them can be difficult especially if
laying on a cold concrete floor. There are some designs of tools to
help coax the bushings into place - the tools are often a bolt with some
washers.

If it won't start in Park, try putting it into neutral. Once you have
the bushings installed it will shift like a new car - at least the
linkage/gear select will seem new.

Good luck,
Larry

A few months ago my '83 300D would occasionally refuse to start. I

Yesterday the car rolled back when I put it in park. I can't get it
to engage.

I'm guessing the problem is in the linkage or the shifter mechanism,
but I don't know which part I should check first.

Has anyone else had that problem?

Thanks

Yes, that was why it caught my attention.  I think it was in the video of a
'79 300SD that he had "tuned up" by advancing the injection timing and I
think he also advanced the camshaft timing with an offset key.

Re: [MBZ] Boxford?

2014-07-10 Thread Meade Dillon
I need that for my yacht. Actually I need a single burner version of that,
they are mucho dinero if bought new at a boat dealer.

I'm about 999 miles from Boxford.
