That switch is different than the switch on my '83 300D. My guess is that they added the white part in order to make switch replacement easier. On mine, which had no white "switch holder", I had to feel around and finally get the studs started via my fingers in the side of the transmission.

Holy. I was just talking to a guy who is based in Connecticut, and he was saying that people are leaving in droves because of the outrageous cost of living there. He was saying that he’s going to accept a lower paying position that will move him to the Carolinas just to get out. Good luck.
