[MBZ] Finally back home! (long)
After our Goldsboro get-together, Shirley and I continued north through North Carolina, visited friends from our church in Los Alamos who had moved to Sykesville, Maryland, and wound up in West Shokan, New York. We spent a couple days there talking with the fellow and his wife who run the Christian radio network Redeemer Broadcasting and going to church with them on Sunday. Monday we headed south toward Stewartsville, New Jersey, to visit OK4WD, the place from which we had bought our ARB portable refrigerator. When we were almost out of New York, we stopped in Hugenot at the Hugenot Deli for lunch. I helped Shirley up the four steps to the platform in front of their front door and then opened the front door for her. She went in, but did not notice the floor inside was about 4" higher than the platform. She tripped and fell, hitting her right knee and forehead. The ladies running the deli were very concerned and very helpful getting her up on a chair, with another one as support for her right leg. She had a huge goose egg on her forehead and her right knee swelled a lot very rapidly. After we ate lunch (Shirley is an insulin-dependent diabetic and cannot forego a meal), they told us were to find the nearest hospital, which had an urgent care facility. When we got to the hospital, I found there was no urgent care facility and asked directions to the nearest one. That was in Milford, Pennsylvania. The urgent care facility did a CAT scan on her head and found no internal damage and x-rays on her knee and found she had fractured her kneecap. They put her in an immobilizer, got her a walker, and sent us on our way. We stayed overnight at the Myer Motel, a really delightful place in Milford. We were then on our way through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio into northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. In Petersburg, Kentucky, I left Shirley in the car for a short while while I briefly looked at the Answers in Genesis Creation Museum and got some pamphlets. The following day we visited the Kentucky Trailer Company in Louisville, which made the 51' furniture van we pull behind our Kenworth W900. I was able to get some information from them about our trailer and a new sticker for the suspension level switch on the front. We then headed to Chenoa, Illinois, where we visited Shirley's cousin and her husband for the weekend. Sunday afternoon, we headed to Wentzville, Missouri, where I picked up on Monday some parts from the company etrailer.com. We had hoped to meet up with Philip (fmiser) that afternoon as we headed toward Joplin, but he had traveled 600 miles north and was not available. We stayed overnight in Joplin and then following morning went to 4 State Trucks, a truck parts supply store with which I have had some dealings. I talked with the fellows there and bought some stuff for our Kenworth. That took longer than I had expected and put us back on the road late in the day. I realized we couldn't make it very far and decided to head to Nowata, Oklahoma, to visit Kaleb, who wasn't very far away. At the farm, Kaleb gave me a tour of the shop. I then asked him some questions about the engine and he started looking at an injector which had a body which didn't seal. He took it out, put it in a container of carburetor cleaner and then gave me a tour of the back 40 and all the vehicles there. He even took a visor off one of them to replace the broken driver's visor on our '90 E300D/2.5 Turbo. Back at the car, he found the leak at the body joint of the injector was about the same (and which I had thought was a noisy lifter), but changed some leaking return hose and cleaned some other stuff up. We then headed to Owasso, where we stopped for the night. The next day, we drove to Groom, Texas, and stayed in a small, nicely kept motel. The following day, we were preparing to continue west when we got a phone call from Kaleb -- he had changed his mind about selling us his '87 300SDL. After praying about the matter, we headed east, intending to meet Kaleb at a truck stop on the west side of Tulsa to exchange cars. We never made it. While on the northward section of I-44, I apparently glanced at the GPS to make sure we were on the right path at just the wrong time and rear-ended the car in front of us when everyone ahead stopped suddenly -- the car in front of the one I hit moved to the shoulder to avoid hitting the car in front of him. I slammed on the brakes and watched as we slid into the back of a car with New Hampshire plates. Perhaps I should have tried some defensive maneuvers, but I probably would have moved to the shoulder as well, only to be hit in the rear by the white pickup which screeched to a stop in that area a couple of seconds later. Once the wrecker came, the policeman who had stopped to help realized Shirley could not make it up into the cab of the wrecker. He took us to the nearby Day's Inn and the wrecker brought the car some minutes later. We were then in the Day's Inn for the next week

Re: [MBZ] Delo 15W40 diesel oel
Years ago RPM Delo, which morphed into Chevron Delo, was the favorite of long haul truckers. The last time I was over there a few months ago, the large Wildwood truckstop had a big stock of Shell Rotella and only a couple cases of Delo, so the long haul truckers have apparently switched. I used Delo for years since it "cured" a weak cylinder in a '58 Beetle that went on to run for 100K miles or more. What sent me looking for a different oil than Delo was a white substance that had settled out of Delo while I had it stockpiled on the shelf. I shook it up and poured it in the 240D engine which still runs like a new one, but after the Delo was gone I switched to M-1 and changed the oil half as often. The 240D and 300D engines have been fine ever since other than leaking oil around the gaskets. Re: [MBZ] 1986 300E Ignition Resistor?
the coil has died in every MB vergasser i've had, except the 230TE. It is a common failure. In fact, the last 2 (non MB) blew up. That is messy! G Mann via Mercedes wrote: It's been about 45 years since I had a coil break down but I still remember the symptoms. 1. Cold engine. Starts and runs normal. 2. As engine warms up, the internal temp of the coil rises and it starts to lose energy due to internal insulation being broken down. 3. This causes loss of ignition, intermittently, at first, a little "tumble" or "stagger". as the coil progresses into the full failure mode while engine heat rises and internal coil temp rises, until the loss of internal insulation allows an electrical path to short out the coil... which shuts off spark and engine dies.. 4. You coast to side of road, open hood, [which allows cool air to engine compartment] and while you are scratching your head [or other body part] in dismay, the coil cools off just enough to make a restart and you drive some more.. 5. Repeat, repeat, repeat finally, coil dies completely. Good news: A 12 volt coil is a 12 volt coil... FLAPS will have one, maybe not the "exact one" but all it needs to work is "12 volts and a coil wire to the distributor," and a bolt to mount the bracket. That will "get you home" when the original dies. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

If I can find a reasonable way to repair the rear suspension disconnect from the body economically, I will need to repair the rear wheel bearing. Yes I am confident that is the problem. So while I have several steps to complete before putting it back on the road, one of the problems is replacing the rear wheel bearing which requires a press and the tool to remove the old bearing. So, I am looking at removing the rear hub so I can take it to a local suspension shop I have used. I would like step by step instructions for removing and re-installing the rear hubs. No rush, anytime you have and feel like writing the procedure down is great! I appreciate the help as always. So, there are numerous steps I need to finish the following: 1. Charge or replace battery. 2. Evaluate rust damage where rear suspension and chassis connect. Repair if appropriate. If repairable, move to step 3. 3. I would guess (and it is only a guess) that you could burn fry oil if you could warm it to the consistency of the normal heating fuel oil so that it would flow through the control valve in a similar manner. Alternatively, you may be able to modify the control valve to permit thicker oil to flow etc. Experimentation would likely be required. Traditionally, Chevron Delo400 has been sort of semi-synthetic and maybe slightly better than Delvac1300 and RotellaT. If 15W is suitable for a 606, go for it. I have very much relaxed my attitude about oil over the years, if its the correct weight and you intend to change every 3,000 miles just about anything will do. Angie's VW with the PD engine requires special oil but other than that... As an update the tick I was complaining about in the 2010 Dodge RAM is gone after a couple hundred miles with M1. It uses 5w20 which pours like water but apparently protects well enough. 126,000 miles now. I had been using Valvoline because of a convenient quick change place. Guess I'll be changing it myself from now on. -Curt On Friday, July 6, 2018, 2:29:18 PM EDT, Floyd Thursby via Mercedes wrote: Costco have 3 gallons for $27, says it is for all diesel engines, had some codes on it I forget now. Re: [MBZ] 1986 300E Ignition Resistor?
It's been about 45 years since I had a coil break down but I still remember the symptoms. On removing the rear suspension springs: The basic concept is to have the wheels on the ground, disconnect the shock (either in the trunk or from the lower control arm), and then jack up the rear of the car with a floor jack under the differential. In this way, as the car is raised up but the wheel and lower (spring link) control arm are allowed to drop, all the tension is safely removed from the spring. I do believe you will have to disconnect the brake line as well, prior to the jacking / lowering operation. - Max Charleston SC ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] W124 Rear Wheel Bearing
Thanks Peter! I have the Tuning Fork type and the clamp type (not sure of its real name). Knowing these details really help me plan if it will be something I want to attempt. So far, it's looking good... ;-) So as long as I put a jack or jack stand under the spring there's no danger of it popping out? I think I know the answer is "Correct" but like to get confirmation from others. No. No plan to remove the spring - if it ain't broke re: tightening the links with the tire jacked up to normal height - I hate to admit it but while I know of the reqmnt to have the car on level ground, I had not thought about raising the tire with a jack to get there! As always, I appreciate your thoughts! Thanks again, LarryT On 07/05/2018 6:38 PM, Peter Frederick via Mercedes wrote: Leave the shock mount bolt alone if you are not planning to remove the spring, it does not need to come out. You will need to unbolt the links for the suspension (camber, thrust, longitudinal, spring link, tie rod) -- tie rod will require a tie rod end tool, I prefer the "lever" type. Remove axle nut on the ground, you will need to use a punch to "undent" it. You will also need a new nut to put back on. So, remove axle nut, jack up and remove caliper and rotor. Rotor is almost always very stuck, a good "smoke wrench" is your friend here, heat a spot near a bolt hole nice and hot and it will pop off. Remove the allen head screw before attempting to remove the rotor. Usually necessary to back the parking brake shoes off a little using the star wheel visible through a lug bolt hole. Once you get the rotor off, remove the parking brake shoes. This is a pain, be careful to remember how all the bits go together. Once you have the parking brakes off, drive the axle back a little bit, it doens't need to go far, just be loose. Unbolt the links on the wheel carrier and get the tie rod end out. Check all the links for worn bushings, this is the time to replace them. Pull wheel carrier and hub off, supporting the axle. DO NOT pull the inner joint apart, it's never the same after... If you do change any links, they must stay loose until you have all of them in place, then jack the wheel carrier up to normal ride height and tighten them all. Failure to do this will result in very strange ride and premature wear on the bushings, they act as springs.
