A sheriff's captain in a jail, I think in California, was recently fired
because she built a BBQ pit/patio in the jail yard, paid for with her own
money, built with prisoner labor, and didn't get a building permit for the
grill.

I'm thinking that's the excuse, not the reason for her termination, but who
gets a building permit to erect a permanent BBQ grill?

Not completely the kids' fault. Their dads (and moms) didn't teach them. Much
stuff is no longer fixable (i.e. throw away). Regulations make many potential
DIY projects illegal. Expensive (and dealer-only) test equipment needed for

On the other hand, it seems many kids don't even try. #2 stepson said he
couldn't cut his grass because he needed a new mower. I took a look. A quick
inspection showed the air filter was totally plugged. Mower ran fine when the
plugged air filter was removed. Duh! And his kids are worse. His #1 son
ruined his car engine by driving (for weeks) with the low oil light on. Lots
more examples.

So for you folks starting out your kids with a classic (repairable) Benz, GOOD

Turns out the M133 is an AMG only item.

The engine in the CLA250 makes:
Torque 258 lb-ft @ 1,250-4,000 rpm

so only about 125hp at 2500rpm.
3000rpm might get you to 150hp (and that's 150hp at any altitude), but would
probably require a custom prop.

That is the plan. Hide under a pineapple for a while and fetch a tan.

Employment in Alaska has finally gotten just a bit better. The market has been
in recession for at least the past three years. The labor numbers came back
and there was a bump upward in April. Now, the price of oil is sliding. The
local benz dealer is always prowling for fresh meat for service desk. I would
be hard pressed to speak well of the new breed of cars on the sales floor.

The MB engine turn a bit fast for a prop, and the speed reduction gear
boxes are the greatest source of failure in auto engine installations in

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT Wimps

2019-06-07 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Most New York City dwellers do not have a garage, basement, or workshop. I grew
up in Brooklyn, and my dad was a machinist. I learned from him, my Grandpa, and
my uncle. Grandpa owned a six-family house, Dad had a workshop in Grandpa's
cellar. I blunder around but manage some things. I've taught my millennial kids
a bit, and bought them some basic tools.

On topic: Both of my sons have done some Benz wrenching on a 240D, and one will
be doing DIY maintenance on a GLK. And my daughter wrenched some hard-to-reach
glow plugs into my diesel Suburban 'cuz she was petite enough to climb right
into the engine compartment!

Value appears to be about the worth of one used tail light, less the
cost of disposing of the balance of the vehicle.

One might be able to salvage the differential?

I owned and restored one of these in tobacco brown/cognac leather. It won
national MBCA concours awards, and sold for $13k (this was in 1997). This
one on BAT is very unattractive but has already climbed to $33k.

I don't think that's happening.

Semis are allowed to run 34k on a set of tandems, so with at least 1000lb is
hitch weight, you can do it with 8 semi trailer tires. If you put 20% on a
fifth wheel, 8 semi tires will do it easily.

Re: [MBZ] New M139 engine

2019-06-07 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
They claim it's not a downgrade because it makes as much power as the old one
at 2000.
But can you imagine the area under the curve if this one made 400ft-lb from
2000 to 5500?
I guess it doesn't really matter. If you have an automatic transmission, you
aren't allowed to go full throttle at 2000rpm, it'll kickdown instead.

The part I like is that it has direct injection, but also has port injectors
for when the direct injectors really shouldn't be asked to push that much fuel.
This should help clean the intake ports and valves, which become a sooty mess
from EGR in DI engines.

The whole point of DI is it's timed for after the exhaust valve closes so none
can blow out the exhaust, and the issues with DI are some of the raw fuel hits
the cylinder wall and ends up in the sump and the fuel detergents can't clean
the EGR soot off the back of the intake valves because the fuel never goes
through them.
