looks like maybe its been stored since 1974.   If so, the miles may be 
actual.   You'd have to go look.  if the body is rust free, it is 
probably a deal.  get the trunk painted, clean it up fix it up and flip it.


if nothing has been done since 1974, it will need a lot to resurrect 
it.  rubber parts, gas tank, fuel lines, carbs, etc.   If that's so, 4k 
is too much.  $1500 maybe.   Probably the guy bought it for $0-500.

The red wirenuts on the two tubes I have tried it on grab on the
plastic threads further out than the steel spring.  The seal is
very good.

It's been about 2 weeks, and I just used a bit more caulk.  Not
really even a skin, let alone getting hard down into the nozzle.
Now, two weeks isn't what I call long term, but the evidence is
that it will do better than anything else I have tried

I have use quite a few different methods, including purchased cap
things.  So far, the wirenut is better.

The ones I used are both.  Threads molded into the plastic the
whole inside.  Then a steel spring way down in the tip.  I'm
pretty sure on the tubes I used it on the steel isn't contacting
anything.

[MBZ] Booting the axle

the first 3 Dorman boots I tried all ripped at the small end when I put 
them in the expander and expanded them. Disgusting!  It was about 45º, 
so I thought later the temp might be a problem.  Today was sunny and 
near 60. so I set everything along the south wall in the sun and let 
things warm up.  The boots felt to be in the 80-90º range about noon so 
I tried again.  I did manage to get one boot on.  When the expander was 
released, it could not collapse completely because of the CV joint.  I 
worked the boot off the expander, then cut off the first 2 large 
diameters on the big end, as they were too big to fit on the axle. with 
those cut off, the remaining diameter was a little smaller than the 
axle, but slipped on and stayed put.  The small end was a little too big 
and wrinkled when I put the band on it.   I bought the extra banding 
tools.  It would be difficult to put the band clamps on without those 
tools.  In the meantime, I ordered 2 Flexx brand boots to try.  When I 
get the car on the road, I will try those on the spare axles.


I decided not to cut off the other 3 factory boots, but to leave them 
until they crack.   The new boots are shorter than original and the 
originals are 5-10 times thicker.   I am not sure how long they will 
last.   I don't think that you can get the boot over the diff end CV 
joint, so that one would have to go on over the outside end, but 
reversed in direction.   Then put on the outer boot.


I was ready to send the boots and tools back up the river, but it seems 
like the problem was temp.   So, I guess I'll keep them.   Wish I could 
get the 3 ripped ones replaced.


I am not satisfied with the expando boots from Dorman.  But for $40 and 
an hour, it sure beats spending $350 for an axle.   The big question is 
how long will they last.   It seems most of these are used on ATVs. so I 
expect only 2-5 years in service.   A for cry from the 20-30 yrs for MB 
boots.


I wanna look again at the parts diagram and see if there is a way to 
reboot with MB boots.

I've used wirenuts before.  They work pretty well.   I think 6 mo or a 
maybe a year is the longest.   They seal well.

Alaska, having energy islands and no viable grid to deliver electrons, seems 
almost able to financially justify (with a bunch of Greenie Weenie huzzah) 
installing wind platforms.  The original option for electric utility power has 
been those generator sets Dan knows about.  Industrial diesel engines that 
belch out smoke and cost close to $15/gallon to power.  The fuel has to be 
barged in by the barrel.  Propellors allow the utility to cut back on all those 
gallons, but with a giant investment in stability measures (battery, flywheel). 
 Not sure I recall what base load providers are.

[MBZ] Caulk tube cap

I have a new favorite caulk tube cap.

A wire nut!!

Low cost, readily available, threads to help hold it on, sturdy,
non-porous, non-permeable (at least "largely non-permeable).

The big red ones are just big enough and I have a lot of 'em.  I'd
like to try the next size bigger - blue, I think.

Good idea. I usually cut the tip small enough I can screw in a larger deck 
screw then gob a bit of caulk over the end to seal it up. I’ll try a wire but, 
I’ve got a bunch of big ones in my electric parts tub
