Sounds like Alaska. Asphalt plant just a block away from $750k homes that back
onto marshlands with rusted out vehicles and dilapidated single wides hidden in
the underbrush. Swamp boasts a new pick up, broke down snow blowers and
skidoos, maybe even a future restorable airframe, minus the floats.

And the Lord of Flies has infested the whole town. I swear the house flies
come in any size to fit your need, from micro, to subcompact, compact, midsize,
full size, luxury, and “was that a crow?"

2020-04-26 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Not likely this winter in ANC was a record for cold or snowfall. Last of the
snow is off the lawn and the soil is now ice free enough for initial yard care.
Sun was out, temps 10C (hovering around 50f). Grass is a few weeks from
needing attention, so I puttered around getting planting boxes cleaned out, cut
up the windfall twig and branches. Joint pain kicked in, and I had filled
enough trash bags, so I retired to the sunny deck to grab some much needed
Vitamin D. Warm enough in the sun to doff my t-shirt. Sun really warmed the
aches away.

A belt buckle will get REALLY hot after taking in Vitamin D if your tummy
happens to touch it

Yeah, property around Plant City, which is about 20-30 minutes from my current
abode, has always been cheap. Go south of me into the really rural parts of the
County and it’s much more expensive, as that’s where the development is going.
Plant City is the poster child for uncontrolled development. Not that it’s out
of control, but there’s no consistency in zoning so you’ve got all these 1-5
acre plots, some with trailers and one next store with a $400k palatial home on

Re: [MBZ] FW: 1963 Mercedes Benz 220E

2020-04-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Correct. At the end of removal of the paint down to bare metal the whole
car is washed down with a hand sprayer using some sort of water based
material that neutralizes the bare metal and retards flash rust for about
72 hours, which is time enough to spray on a coat of sealer.

Sealer will sand off easily to permit body repairs for damaged areas, then
reseal those areas... Sand the sealer, primer, sand the primer, finish
coats, dry and cure, sand the finish coat to flat, then polish to
perfection... same old , same old...
Big difference is, you get to start with clean metal, rather than try to
sand down all previous bad work to get a good base to paint...
Three years ago, I came within two heartbeats of buying a complete
operation for Dustless blasting here, so had the chance to see it done, and
to do it, with the equipment... Hands down, much better than sand blasting,
which I had used and done in the past.

Here is a video that may give you answers to what they are using in the
Dustless process.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Honda transmission

2020-04-26 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Got around to checking this today. Pulled the solenoid assembly off of
the transmission. Externally, it was caked with oily dirt. There are two
solenoids on the assembly, I think one is the 1/2 shift and the other is
the 2/3 shift. The 3/4 shift is separate.

Both solenoids measure 6 ohms, and if I operate them directly with the
battery they both draw 2 amps. I think all this really tells me is that
the windings are OK though.

One of them definitely sounds "snappier" than the other when I operate
them. So I guess this might be the problem. Though doesn't seem
100%. From what I've read, when these don't operate properly they *do
not* throw a diagnostic code, so as far as the car is concerned the
transmission is operating normally even though the shifts are slow.

The OEM part is close to $400 by the time you add the gasket (of course
not included).

I could try this one

https://www.amazon.com/Aramox-Transmission-Solenoid-Control-28260-PRP-014/dp/B07PZ6ZN3R

It's not a difficult part to get to. Remove the battery and battery tray
and there's good access to it. So it would not be the end of the world
if it doesn't last another 10 years. Thoughts?

[MBZ] This new$500E300 is pi**ing me off

I spent the afternoon swapping out modules and clearing codes as best I could
in various nannies. Still doesn’t want to start though I think all the stuff
was good. Charging up the battery again.

I guess the next thing is to see if fuel is getting to the engine and the fuel
pump is actually working. It’s below the intake manifold so a PITA to get at.
I’ll have to see if I can reach the power connector and put a meter on it.

I’m going to call them tomorrow and get someone on record to confirm the
numbers. At least that way I have a backup plan.

Florida does this stupid “Administrative fee” on any car you bring in from out
of state. However, if you have a “dormant” registration in the system they can
use that as a transfer and the $225 fee is waived. I’ve had my 1982 300SD that
I sold in 1999 in the system since then and used it as a transfer for literally
decades.

When we moved back here in 2011 it saved me almost $700 in fees.

I’m trying to figure out how I get a title for this new to me W124. All of the
tax collector branches are closed because of the beer virus. If you go to their
web site it says to look up the fees and mail them the application and a check.
Only problem is that I have a legacy car sitting in their system that exempts
me from the $225 “administrative fee” they charge for any car being titled in
FL from out of state.

I’ll sit on this for as long as I have to to avoid the $225.00. Late fee for
filing a title application 30 days after the ale or later is $30. I’ll roll the
dice and wait. Only thing is I’m not sure I have a plate I can put on it until
then…

Re: [MBZ] 1996 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 300D Sedan 4D,$2,000

2020-04-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I once had a car I bought from knutsack that had a number wrong on the vin.
Could not get a title in OK because it didn’t match. It had a IL title. I ended
up having Rusty make me a Bill of sale in GA and mailed it to me. I took that
to the tag office and got an OK title.

I’ve seen this before. One thing I didn’t catch was that they spray or apply
something after blasting to protect the metal, or so it sounds, but I haven’t
been able to figure out what.

Having that much bare metal exposed is going to be an issue if you don’t have a
way to stabilize the surface in short order.

Re: [MBZ] FW: 1963 Mercedes Benz 220E

2020-04-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It is a perfect candidate for paint removal to bare metal, door jams and
all. If the mechanical bones are truly good, and there is no rust. Followed
by a proper repaint in a good solid color that would go with the interior
color..
Est: $4,000.00 for repaint [Didn't Mercedes have a nice rich dark blue for
that year?

Interior wood issues:
Rework with proper wood and attention to fine detail. That would truly be a
labor of love and craftsmanship... However, seems there is enough there for
patterns.

Window trim screws: Appear to me to be snaps for a snap on car cover to sun
shade the windows and interior, perhaps... Since the snaps are into the
window trim, replacement trim would be necessary., another cost [I have no
idea if new would be available anywhere in the world.]

It is after all, a Finnie... likely worth saving.. complete and running...
Just be brave and have a good size workshop for the next 2 years, and a
good case of "deep wallet"...

I’m just talking off the top of my head. Once he breaks down and buys some land
I’ll figure it out from there. I’ll have to cede some space to him for whatever
he wants it for in exchange for the land. He’s such a tightwad I’ll be
surprised if he ever does it, though.

DC area had record snowfall this winter - zero inches (literally). Perhaps
in consequence, we are having a brutally chilly spring with temps. in the
50s to low 60s and rain showers every other day. Other than cucumbers my
seedlings are way behind the norms for this time of year. In a month I'll
probably be eating those words.

Re: [MBZ] This is what you have to look forward to in 15-20 years when all the 124s and 210s are gone

2020-04-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I toyed with running the S210 (98 E320) wagon at 55 versus 65 on my short
commute to see if it had any noticeable effects. It’s only 20 miles of the 38
or so daily when I was doing it, but I figured it might make a difference. And
the difference driving 55 mph for 20 miles versus 65 mph can’t be significant
time-wise.

Not sure when/if I’ll get a chance to try this out…

Yeah, we had record rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Badly needed as we
actually went over six weeks with no measurable precipitation (none in March at
all!)

Now I’ll need to cut the back 40. Might take me all of 10 minutes. While I’m
not terribly keen about the proximity of my neighbors, having a much smaller

mostly 60. In fact I didn't think to try for a high mileage run until I was
already 8 or 9 miles into it, I could probably do better if I worked at it the
whole distance.
Interestingly on the way home I had a cop slide in behind me, I was doing 60 in
a 55 zone. I was amazed to see other cars zipping past us as he was obviously
running my plate. I had the cruise set and just kept it between the lines.
After I came up clean he moved on an nabbed another slow driver 3 cars ahead of
me...

the $10K price difference, way more room with similar fuel economy! It’s

It has no problem getting as high as 22.6MPG on mostly highway drives, probably

Did you change the small o-rings on the filter holder shaft? If they are bad
they let the oil drain back out of the lifter supply, and it takes a while to
get the air out.

Best I've ever done in the Golf is 47.5, but then I have to stop 15 times on
the way to work, 17 if I hit the lights wrong on the "short" route.

Rear brakes drag, in the process of changing the rear rotors (as soon as it
quits raining!) so that should go up a little.

My brother routinely got 52 mpg on the highway in is 05 Jetta TDI.

5 speed manual in both cases.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1989 Mercedes 300E 4 door Project car

2020-04-26 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In Florida it’s an absolute. A car without AC takes a huge hit on the market if
you’re selling. Might not be nearly as bad for someone like AZ Bob, as they
don’t have the humidity we do. That’s why it’s necessary. I can deal with the
heat, but not with the humidity. The W123 LWB didn’t have AC, and that was
really, really unpleasant.
