My daughter's grandpop left to my son a coupla really nice 12g shotguns
he used for shooting clays. The boy has evidenced no interest in them
for like 18 years. I had them here at the manse, she wanted them so I
passed them on to her, she can sort it out with her bro if it comes to
that.
It seems the shot (including steel) would stay in the wad (basically a
plastic cup) until clearing the barrel. Does anyone know if this is right?

Thanks for the advice. I don't think she has put many rounds through
it. I have some lead shot too but didn't want to be blowing that out
into the marsh too much. I got the steel stuff too for her old single
shot thing she got from a friend.

Steel and tungsten shot both come with thicker, longer wads to protect the
barrel. There is a balance though, if the wad holds too tightly the pellets
won't separate.

I should also have mentioned that steel is hard on the choke since it doesn't
squish together at all when passing through. So the real concern is ruining the
choke.
Bismuth is a better non toxic choice for older guns but it's really spendy.
