two and a half times your annual income. For a $300k home, that is considerably
more than $40k.

3x is what I've always heard, of course the amount of other debt a
person has can reduce this.

It depends on where he is willing to live, northern Maine is still quite
affordable. There are 2x 3 unit apartment buildings by my grandmother's house
(now owned by my aunt and uncle) for sale, combined price of less than $200,000.
