I am HOPING that the a/c is simply a re-charge. He
didn't drive it much...but am prepared for the worst.

Kevin, its been a while since I had to work on one of these but I think I
remember there being a little spring that keeps the switch in the set position.
There are two so chances are if it doesn't lock in either position both springs
have broke or fallen inside the column.
