I had a GP on my Vanagon Westy 1.6D go like that. Had it towed back

Someone accidentally started to fill it up with gasoline, then quietly
and secretively put the nozzle back, and finished with the correct
stuff? Sounds like a woman might be involved here...

Marshall, thanks for your input. There certainly could be other
factors. I had changed glow plugs, timing chain, valve seals, fuel
filters, battery, starter and probably a few other things with no
change. Many of these were changed for other reasons, but some were
changed to chase the start
See? You shoulda bought my 220 with a good pan and plenty of spare parts to
keep Gumpy going for a while!
Actually, I've begun diagnosing the no start problem with this new-to-me
220D. The VC is off now so I'll be able to tell if the valves are opening
and closing as they should.

Is it the challenge of getting it to multi-task?
For me, absolutely!

My 190D had the same problem rust-wise. Muffler shops I contacted
weren't
interested in repairing, said it would be too expensive. Told me that a
new pipe was available and quoted that price at something like $200
installed.
This would be a drop-off kind of proposition, they'd do it I'm
sure.
spare fuses, bottle of diesel purge, pantyhose to tie together a split
radiator hose...that's all i can think of.

I'm going to buy the 300D I wrote for your opinion about. I considered
buying Donald Snook's but dragged my feet and missed out. This one seems
very nice and sounds like it'll be head & shoulders above my 240D - it'll be

I have never heard of this with the smaller GPs. In 93 when we were moving
from HI to IA we were driving the diesel escort and the 200D (OM 621) from
Seattle to IA. Both were fully loaded/overloaded. Going over the
mountains somewhere, I had the guts of a GP blow out. It was weird as all

Yes you do. And the jury is still out on that subject.
