Thanks Jim - I'll check on the oil - but I think this was done as a first time try by my son - I'll copy him on this and ask about the mineral oil. Cools fine, just noisy. Car is quiet without the AC running, and then about doubles the noise with the AC, and the car tends to overheat [to high normal] when idling. It is a converted system, and works fine except for the noise when idling [can't tell when it is at highway speeds]. Thanks - Bill, Noise is a symptom of low oil quantity in the system. Have you had to recharge the system since the compressor was put in? If so, did you add oil at the same time? Oil isoften overlooked but I have not seen too many freon leaks that didn't include a loss of oil too. Or you are in the first throws of black death, which often follows a conversion to R134 where the system was not completely flushed of mineral oil. [MBZ] OT air compressor
So, yesterday we purchased the $100 Dayton Model 1500 air compressor and reassembled it today. Finally fired it up about 9 tonight (had to make a trip to Mena and borrow a few tools from Grandpa's house) and it leaks a fairly steady drip out the oil sight tube on the side of the block. Anyone had this problem on an air compressor before? What is a recommended fix? Epoxy from the outside or inside? Any others?? It needs an oil change also, how do I tell how much oil I need to add? It is a two stage compressor. TIA for the help. -- Luther KB5QHU Alma, Ark '83 300SD (236 kmi) '82 300CD (160 kmi) '82 300D (74 kmi) needs MAJOR work
Re: [MBZ] Importing Car from Canada - Border Customs Questions
Hello, list Customs Officer here, For a 1947 car, all you will need is a bill of sale and the car's insurance print-out which doubles as a title in Canada. At the border, they will issue a form CF7501 which is valid in all fifty states to show your license office that the car has been examined by USCS and is in compliance. A '47 is exempt from DOT and EPA requirements. Duty is assessed at 3% of the first $1K and 2.5% on the remaining balance. US and CDN manufactured vehicles are exempt duty. Please email me offline with any further questions. I can be reached at my office from Sun to Tue this week at 509 476 2955 or 476 2125. Regards, Rory Morrison Oroville, WA 1985 300SD 1982 300TD

Re: [MBZ] vac pump 1980 300D
Did the shop reverse the vaccum lines to the ignition switch? Or is this how this system should operate? Can I reverse the lines under the hood without damaging anything?. Yes, try that. The lines are supposed to leak on one end (the IP) when ON, and not when OFF (they are coupled together then). The vacuum switch itself can fall apart, I've had this happen, on the Albatross (79 240D). I was able to put it back together in that case, it had gotten oily and a good cleaning took care of it. -- Jim

Well, the compressor is around 50 years old, so it'll be hard to replace the sight glass. Though, it might be a standard 1/2 NPTlooks about the right size. I'll check that tomorrow. yes, I saw that picture, if I can dig it up I will post it. But its only logical the cummins would have bigger rods, the displacement is spread out over 6 cylinders where the others its spread out over 8, so they wouldnt have to be as heavy because you have more of them. Jim Cathey wrote: two. I never spent any time reading Duramax forums, and I never heard of a blown up Cummins when I was reading Dodge forums, so blown 7.3 Powerstrokes are all I know anything about. sounds like its doing what its supposed to. When you turn the key off it allows vacuum thru the key to the shutoff. [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness
SoI finally re-realized my aux fan on this car has never worked. I thought of this as I was troubleshooting the #1 fuse issues I had (found a remnant of an old fuse making contact to one end on the #1 fuse holder making, I guess, a dead short...I have no idea where this piece of old fuse came from). When I was in the fuse block, I noticed there was no fuse in place for the aux fan. duh. I put the correct fuse in and, later in the day, I noticed the fan was operating. A couple of times yesterday, when I started the car after it had set for a couple of hours and cooled off (well, relative for here) the fan came on when I turned the ignition switch. The engine temp was about 135 degrees F. Now, this fan should switch on at a prescribed temperature correct? And/Or should it be on when ever the AC is on? Re: [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness
The fan is operated via a relay. Said relay is activated by engine temp (switch is in the thermostat housing on your car) AND via a temperature switch on the receiver/dryer. The fan may be two speed, in which case there is a large ceramic resistor somewhere, and there will be two relays instead of one. You will have to check a wiring diagram to see for sure. Likely the relay (or relays) are bad or you have a worn or loose wire grounding. You can test the temperature switch wiring by pulling the connector off the switch in the thermostat housing and grounding it. Fan must come on in high speed. The AC wiring can be tested by jumping the wires on the temp switch (there are two switches, one for low pressure and the other for the fan), fan should come on in low speed if a two speed. I would look for worn or frayed wires first, as this is the most likely cause of goofy operation. Relays would be the second thing to look at (if they stick or fail to make contact). Switches can be bad, too. Peter

The engine temp was about 135 degrees F. Now, this fan should switch on at a prescribed temperature correct? And/Or should it be on when ever the AC is on? The usual cause of that is that the AC is on at start and the engine compartment has gotten a good heat soak, causing a high pressure in the AC system. It usually shuts off pretty soon as things stabilize. The aux fan is _not_ normally on all the time the AC is on, by design, and I'd agree with this. Because the AC compressor is on such a large percentage of the time, unless EC is selected, the aux fan would run too much. It's not rated for continuous duty, in that it'd wear out pretty quickly if it were on all the time. So it's wired to only come on when needed. -- Jim

Re: [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness
Hi Bob, My 91 300D does that too - even when starting cold in the morning - turn key and wait for GPs, the fan comes on - startup - it eventually goes off. I've read Peters well written troubleshooting comments but have not gone looking for trouble as the fans works when it gets hot just like I want it to -- with temps in the upper 90s I had to idle for a few minutes - with the aux fans on the temp stayed at 80C - the temp of my thermostat. I was amazed at the capacity of the cooling system - AC running, at idle - and no rise in temp. Glad you found the cause of the blown fuses - Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: Bob Rentfro [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List Mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sunday, July 30, 2006 12:23 PM Subject: [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness SoI finally re-realized my aux fan on this car has never worked. Makes sense. It was stupid hot in the garage when I went out there to leave yesterday. She always pulls here blazing hot Acura in and instantly closes the garage door (she's one of those). Even though I have an old oscillating fan movie air around it can't do much good unless you leave the door open for a spell. Didn't think of heat soak. So it's wired to only come on when needed. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Brits; what's wrong with these people?
I would guess that it was either because ofthe fuel economy, lackthereof by UK standards, age and quite possibly that it had some fault that didn't allow it to pass the MOT. Jeff Zedic Toronto 87 300TD
Re: [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness
Thanks Jim, that explains the one time occurrence I experienced last week when it was 123 degrees and lots of shutoff and start errands. Happened just that one time and been working great ever since. In older Mercedes (before the mid '80s), the switch in the compressor circuit that turns the aux fan ON is not a pressure switch, but is actually a temperature switch (temperature and pressure in a closed system are correlated). Most of the so called high pressure switches turn on at about 50-55 deg. C. If the engine compartment is heat soaked in the absence of little or no active cooling, the engine compartment can easily reach 50+ deg. C and that can trigger the aux fan as soon as the ignition switch is turned on! Re: [MBZ] Aux Fan Craziness
Nope...it's always on. I hope that the attic fan from my in-law's house is include in the stuff I get to schlep from IL to AZ in Sept. That pig could move some air. I would install it in my garage. Looking forward to looking off of the interstate and seeing new Busch Stadium as I pass through. [MBZ] How about a W-210 gasser?
Can't find much about this in my archives, maybe someone can tell me... A friend is considering a 1999 E-320 for his kids. It has 160k mi on it and he expects to get it for a good price. It looks good and has airbags and safety features all over the place. I looked it over and didn't see any rust around the front suspension. But that is the only issue I know about for the W-210. How about the M112 engine? Are they sound? Are there any issues I should look for or warn him about? Thanks, Ned Kleinhenz '95 E300Dx2 '85 300D '80 300TD

Lordstown. The plant that was built to manufacture the Chevy Vega... That explains everything. Bad genes. RLE
Re: [MBZ] old 124 wagon
I still can't understand how they found that great W124 station wagon for ?695 - at current conversion that's $1294.47. I'd buy it in a minute unless there's 400+k (I know, just broken in good) without any records.. It was a rustbucket that probably couldn't pass the MOT. Did you not notice the rust holes? RLE

Shame the Cavalier wasn't defect-free, like the new Benz line! (sic) On 7/30/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Lordstown. The plant that was built to manufacture the Chevy Vega...
