[MBZ] cheap cheap cheap
One of the local car lots had a couple of MB's, and they leave them unlocked, so I stopped by and looked. 03 or so E320, I cant believe how cheap the interior was. Sunvisors were just cheap cloth with cheap little flip open mirrors. The wood appeared to be fake, plastic everywhere. Cheap cheap cheap. That was nothing compared to the CLK they had. It has cloth seats, seemed exactly like a neon or something. Geez. At least the stereos sounded nice. -- Kaleb C. [MBZ] 126 AC Schematic
Does anyone have the schematic for the 126 (82 300 SD) climate control pushbutton box? Mine has gotten a little flakey lately so thought I might try some focused troubleshooting vs. blind resoldering. The basic symptom is that it takes quite a while until it really starts cooling well. After that, it alternates blowing really cold or so-so (seems like fluctuations are too large). This is not an emergency and I have a spare CC control box I may try, but thought I'd query the list first. Cheers. Re: [MBZ] And you thought we where all normal over here
Hendrik -- Speaking of AMG ... I live in a small rural Iowa town in the midst of the agricultural region ( http://www.jeffersoniowa.com/). There is a law firm across the street from my office and we occasionally see an M-Class Benz or a Lexus SUV parked there, driven in from the big city by an attorney. We do have a late model E320 and a G-class here in town but both are owned by an old fart retired farmer and his wife. I have a 240D and our auditor drives a 10 year old (?) C-class gasser. That is it for our local Benz community. Last Thursday afternoon, I looked out our office window and saw what I think was a late 70s or early 80s S-Class (might have been an E-Class, couldn't swear in a court of law). A very nice bronze-brown in color. Had this wee tit of a spoiler on the back of the trunk. Custom wheels (but very nice, discrete sort of custom wheels) on what seemed to be factory size tires. I did not notice any sort of spoiler in the front but I didn't have a good look at the front from my angle. I wandered across the road to see what manner of beast this might be. The trunk emblem was not much help, for it said only AMG. The more I looked at the car the more it looked to deserve a speeding ticket just sitting there parked. It was either a W124 or a W126 -- I don't have enough experience to tell between the two unless I have a tape measure. I was in absolute lust. I asked our administrative assistant to watch to see who was driving it and what building he left. As luck would have it, the car disappeared while she took a run to the loo. I went to the law office to ask who might own the car and they gave me blank stares -- no one had been in and out all morning. The only other shop there is a barber. Perhaps someone popped in from out of town for a haircut? D. [MBZ] Engine quitting
Folks, The daughters new (to her) 1995 E300D has quit on her a couple of times, it left her stranded the other night. She thought she had run out of fuel although the gage said she had a bit under 1/2 a tank. She did not attempt to start it in case it was out of fuel. She returned to the vehicle the next day with 5 gallons of diesel poured it in the tank and it started immediately so it was not out of fuel. The gage proved accurate as I drained about 10 gals out of it. I replaced the tank screen, disassembled and cleaned the level sensor, replaced both fuel filters, filled the high pressure one with diesel purge, added 3 gallons of clean diesel to the tank. She drove into Woodland a mile or so away, filled the tank it took 20 gallons and on the way home it quit. She called me I drove down the hill to her, opened the stop knob on the high pressure filter a bit more it started and she drove home and up the steep hill to my place without an issue -- she does not trust the car at this stage. So where should the 'stop screw' be positioned at? I changed the overload (overvoltage) relay drove it in Italian fashion in the hills behind us never missed a beat, the cruise started working reliably for me however she tried it today and she said it was useless. It does have the Benz and an after market security system. Any thoughts, Dennis T -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Dennis, IIRC the OM606 series is notorious for having fuel leaks with the fittings near the fuel filter(s), which allows fuel out and/or air into the system. I'd check to make sure all these fittings are tight and install new o-rings and hoses. Unfortunately, that's all I got for ya. Good luck! [MBZ] OT : eBay searches [was: Re: cheap SDL]
So how do you get it to restrict the search to Ending within 3 days, Max Price: $1,222.00 ? (How did you go about setting up the search?) Those search parameters are in the left side panel (frame?) of any initial eBay search. The panel is yellow. At the bottom of the panel, below the show items button is a link that says Customize options displayed above. Click that link (the word customize) and it will take you to a page where you can add and subtract certain search parameters, I.E. items within 200 miles, items ending in two days, items priced from 0- 1222 dollars. Another search trick is to check the box under the search labeled Search title AND description I want to say that eBay uses a Boolean type search engine. I could be mistaken on the correct name. A few features of how it works are these. In any given search if you use quotation marks it will search for that particular combination of characters in that combination only. I.E. if searching for a 300 D you would search 300 d . Use of parenthesis. Using parenthesis is using the OR function of the search engine. Say, for instance you are searching for a dodge with a Cummins or hemi engine. your search would be something like dodge (Cummins, hemi) . Use of the wildcard. The wildcard character * is used to symbolize ANY combination of characters following a combination of two characters. If you are searching for a Chevrolet, you know that some people call them Chevy. To include both variations of this and any other string of characters beginning with chev, you would use chev* . You would be surprised at how many people misspell Mercedes. Finding one of these auctions with misspellings GREATLY increases the chances of finding a bargain. One thing about the folks on this list, we love a bargain. I hope this helps someones chance of finding a bargain. Rick Knoble '85 300 CD '87 190 DT

[MBZ] 240D brake msytery
I just got the green goddess back from the shop last week-reman Bosch alternator that I posted about-and it also had a hot brake smell and significant pedal fade problem. They found no excessive wear signs on the pads or rotors- so they flushed the brake fluid and replaced. They drove it about 25 miles and it wouldn't heat up or fade. I drove it around town and it seemed fine-yesterday on way to old car show, about 10 miles-hot brake smell and sever (75%) pedal loss. Limped it back to Indy's. Right front wheel/hub cap was hot. So is it likely to still be fluid? Bad caliper? Brake lines? NOTE-A year ago I had this problem and my other Indy (now out of business) put on reman calipers and two new front brake lines. Only have driven it about 3K miles since then. Is it acting up because I brought the 300D 2.5t home? My mother-in-law bought me a window unit because she knew how much I enjoyed messing with cars on the days I wasn't in pain and when it got too warm (70) I could only be out there for a few minutes at a time. Bless her heart - she stayed with us during her last years - a sweet lady. Anyway - the AC cools the garage down to ~70F even when it's pretty warm outside - today I'm replacing the alternator on the '91 300D and I turned it around this morning before it got hot outside - it's supposed to be close to 100 with 90%+ humidity - so I did't lose too much of the cool air. I have insulation and sheetrock on 2 walls - obviously can't do much more insulating on the big garage doors - but I have 1 more wall to do - which is shaded by trees so it's not too bad. Of course, I also have a fan to move the air around - whether the AC is on or not. I guess 'm spoiled. - Can't imagine how I made it when young - we didn;t have home AC until I was 12 or so - no AC in the cars either - this was early 60s - and it wasn;t unusual to have a car or house without AC IMHO. Anyway - ya'll stay cool - the east coast is supposed to have temps around 100F for the next few days. Re: [MBZ] Engine quitting
Hi Dennis, I would not trust the after market security system - find it and disable/remove it. The mid 90s diesels are not the thieves favorite vehicle - if its stolen it'll be because it was unlocked with the keys in it - if broken into it's because someone wants the radio or something left in view - of course, if it doesn't attempt to disable the vehicle then it's not part of the problem - perhaps it only sounds the horn and flashes the lights? Try to find out how the aftermarket security system works - I'm curious how it might work - most work to cut the electrity but that won't do any good on a diesel. If it doesn't attempt to disable the vehicle then it's not part of the problem - It would be helpful to know how the car acts when it shuts down - lack of fuel usually stops instantly - not like a gas car that stumbles/runs/stumbles/etc before finally dieing from lack of fuel. Ask her what it did/how it acted - Back to the engine - as we all know, a diesel will run as long as it;s getting fuel and air - air is not typically a problem - and you've probably checked/replaced the air filter. That leaves the fuel system which some others have described possible problems - they sound very likely to make it stop -- but I'm not sure it would restart after waiting a while if it was getting air into the system. That usually requiures some effort to remove the air. I have the workshop manual but did not see any info about the shutoff linkage. My diesels stop lever's have tension on them - so it takes a bit of efforty to push them - I doubt the shutoff is moving enough to make the IP stop providing fuel I can send you sections of the WSM if you need them - I'll keep searching for info in it. Re: [MBZ] 240D brake msytery
Hi Dwight - Even if the calipers were remanufactured it may have a piston that is sticking - when a brake is dragging, it's either the piston/s or the brake hose is deterioating internally and not allowing the fuild to return and the pistons to release. I'd remove the caliper check the pistons for ease of movement.. D. Re: [MBZ] I got my new rig today
I think GM is very smart to say things like that. Most people are only as smart as squirrels and can't think any farther ahead than yesterday and will regularly do things not in their best interests if left to their own devices. GM is essentially saying We won't take ANY responsibility if YOU do something to this engine. Thus forcing owners toward some level of personal responsibility something GM and I know is sorely lacking in today's society. -Curt Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2006 16:36:02 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] I got my new rig today To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Just tossing in my 2 cents here, don't know why GM would say that since there are alot of engine mods out there that are perfectly safe for the DM. If it is done right you can up the HP and torque without doing any damage to the cats or the engine. There's a Bully Dog setup that includes the chip, larger exhaust (cat back) and all the gauges to monitor the engine function and exhaust temp. You can't just chip a DM you have to realize that when you make changes in how the engine operates there are other factors to consider. Re: [MBZ] 240D brake msytery
Indy's. Right front wheel/hub cap was hot. So is it likely to still be fluid? Bad caliper? Brake lines? Any of the above I suppose, but least likely to be fluid. Do you _know_ that OOB-man actually did the work? Get that front brake sticking and then jack it up, crack the bleeder, and see if the brake releases. That's a classic diagnosis of a bad hose, though I suppose it could also be a bad master cylinder that didn't release pressure when it ought. Though both front brakes share that line, so it seems less likely. Examine the hard brake lines for kinks and corrosion too. -- Jim
[MBZ] Powersteering woes
Oh plauge and pestilence. The powersteering leak I should have been fixing last weekend seems to have bitten me on the behind today. Driving to work I noticed a very strong oil smell that seemed to come and go. Once parked I noticed my car had left a trail of red oil... So its gotta be a PS leak, theres not much other red oil in the car and the trans feels fine and hasn't been leaking. I presume this is the low pressure hose, it looked suspect before and I haven't been able to find any leaks around the pump. Does anybody know what size this hose is? I know Rusty sells it by the metre but I'd rather not wait for shipping and I've already given him a couple boat payments off this car, plus I need to give him a call for a voltage regulator this week anyway... Re: [MBZ] Engine quitting
Casey: I've always kept that little shut-off valve, on top of the fuel filter, wide open. Don't know if there is any reason to adjust it. And the fuel systems on these 606's do have lots of ways to leak - both air in and fuel out. The worse area is around the fuel filters. About 2 out of 3 times when I mess with the fuel filters or fuel injection system, I end up with a leak to track down and fix. You might also check the fuel tank outlet for slime and signs of life that clog it. My tanks seem to accumulate enough moisture to badly rust the fuel cap. If it's any consolation to your daughter, I've driven high mileage '95 E300D's about 250k miles. And I can remember only being stranded once. About 2 years ago, one of them blew a fuse where I didn't even know there was a fuse. That car sat in the same parking space until I studied the schematics and figured that one out. [MBZ] More AC questions
My brother in law came over and charged the AC in my 115 76 300D yesterday afternoon. We put 134 in and it is blowing cold air. At speed it is blowing down to about 52 degrees out the centre vent so that is not bad. However, I have a couple of issues to deal with. The auxiliary fan is not running at all. The circuit seems to be fairly simple based on the schematic from the CD manual. Reading other posts on here leads me to believe that I should short the terminals on the switch that is screwed into the side of the receiver dryer doodad. The manual appears to suggest that the switch should be removed first. I don't recall anyone saying that on the list. I assume I can just use a wire as a jumper and join the terminals on the switch to see if the fan then cuts in and if so, the switch is bad - right? There are 2 small boxes above the receiver dryer that have 2 fuses in each. Are these related to the AC? I cleaned the terminals and put new fuses in but that didn't change anything. Didn't try the voltmeter to see if there is anything there. Second issue, is that I am getting air out of the driver's side vent and the centre vent but nothing from the passenger side vent. I recall something on that subject recently for newer model cars. Anyone out there know what I should be looking for on a 115?? Randy B
Re: [MBZ] Engine quitting
The engine shut off valve should be all the way open (counter-clockwise) under normal operation. It may or may not be your problem, but it's certainly worth giving it a try and running it a bit. J.B. [MBZ] Fuses in a 115?
My 76 300D has the one main fuse block on the left front fender. Just above and ahead of it are 3 more small fuse boxes. Two of them have pop off covers and the 3rd one has a threaded rod with a knob on top that must be undone to remove the cover. Each of the 3 has 2 fuses. One of the pop off boxes has a red fuse and a white fuse. The white one keeps blowing. I am wondering if both fuses should be red. All of the other small boxes with 2 fuses seem to have 2 of the same color. That makes me wonder if this one should as well. Anyone out there know for sure? Re: [MBZ] OT: Home Brew was Re: HF A/C gauges
I have made root beer, birch beer, and ginger beer. You can buy little bottles of extract, at the grocery store or a home-brew shop, mix it up with some water and sugar, or make a syrup and pour it in some fizzy water. Or you can use it to do the yeast thing, that makes it fizzy but also makes some alcohol (not a lot, couple percent) from the yeastie beasties doing their work. And you have to be REALLY careful as the pressure really builds in the bottles. I pour the mix in plastic 1 liter bottles, they swell up like (American) footballs but I have not had any of them explode (though they do tip over when the bottoms get puffed out). Contrast this to my experience in high school, using discarded liquor bottles for containers, my success rate there was about 50%, to the consternation of my dad who liked to keep the garage clean. It was great fun to take them in the car though, with my buddies, and chug on them at stoplights, drawing evil looks from the oldsters sitting next to us who probably thought we were counter-culture delinquents who would end up driving old Benzes. Here is a recipe I think was in the NYTimes (could be fake but accurate), for Jamaican ginger beer, not brewed but just made like lemonade: Recipe: Ginger Beer Time: 10 minutes, plus at least 4 hours' steeping 12 ounces ginger, washed and roughly chopped (about 2 cups); peel if you want a lighter-colored beverage 1 bay leaf ¾ cup sugar Juice of 1 lemon. 1. Place chopped ginger in a large bowl. Add bay leaf. Boil 10 cups water and pour it over ginger. Let mixture sit for at least 4 hours or overnight. 2. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, place ¾ cup water and the sugar and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer just until sugar has melted, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool. 3. Strain ginger mixture into a pitcher or a glass jar, mix in sugar water and lemon juice. Stir and serve over ice. Yield: About 10 cups. If you want me to send you some more off-line, I collected a bunch. most of which are yeast-made so will have a bit of ethanol in it. All have pretty much the same base ingredients, with some variations. --R Rick Knoble wrote: Reminds me, wifey wants me to brew up a batch for a work event in 3 weeks, guess I better go get the ingredients. Re: [MBZ] More AC questions
I think it should be coming on. We were running the car in the garage and watching the temperature of the engine and of the cold air out of the vent. At one point the compressor was trying to lock up and it stalled the car when I tried to back out of the garage. My mechanic brother in law (he is a licenced mechanic with a fair amount of AC experience but no experience on old MB's) thinks that the fan should come on and help cool the AC. It seems to be fine when the car is moving and has air flowing through the rad. The vent lever was working before we had the AC working. Lever shuts off flow of vent. Now however, with the AC on there is no airflow from the vent. Will try to take another look at it this evening. In my memory, it was wonderful. Used root beer extract, sugar, hot water and yeast. Let it sit a while and then bottled it. My job was to do the capping. Here's a link I found that has a recipe.. http:// www.greydragon.org/library/brewing_root_beer.html Hope it helps... [MBZ] Part number for 300TD self-levelling struts
Greetings from the Colonies More on my self-levelling rear struts replacement... I've found an affordable source of struts in Australia for my 1985 300TD. Problem is, their part number is not the same as mine. So I wonder if you guys with EPCs could tell me what you think the part number is. Vehicle number is W123190 2F 043108 (300TD 5-spd manual). The part number I'm working to is A123 320 07 03. Thanks Euan ___ Euan S Kennedy Christchurch 8061 New Zealand E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [MBZ] Engine quitting
Thanks David - Actually, I had an aftermarket asystem a PO had put on a 78 Chev Malibu we had. Were driving along when all of a suddem it died - in the street - we pulled over and I managed to pull the wire going to the disributor - it started instantly - it was an amazing Chev 305(?) V8 that was in perfect condition - and never had the problem again. I removed the control box and alarm - it ws not a very sophisticated system but it was wired to the distribitor and would ground the electronic points if the car wasn't started properly. I guess the manufacturer wasn't too concerned with liability. ;-) Take care - Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D) www.youroil.net for Oil Analysis and Weber Parts Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Info http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs Porsche Road Test http://members.rennlist.com/roadtest/ . - Original Message - From: David Brodbeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Monday, July 31, 2006 2:01 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Engine quitting LarryT wrote: Try to find out how the aftermarket security system works - I'm curious how it might work - most work to cut the electrity but that won't do any good on a diesel. If it doesn't attempt to disable the vehicle then it's not part of the problem - A lot of them are just wired to interrupt the circuit to the starter solenoid. I think there's too much liability involved in wiring to interrupt the fuel pump or ignition circuits -- if the alarm or relay malfunctioned the car could stall on the freeway and cause an accident. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- No virus found in this incoming message.
