Nice enough to go out and replace the rack damper pin the 83. Of course as I'm looking about I see the steering damper shock is busy dripping oil. Make sure the mount attached to the rear of the transmission is in good shape -- it not, it will allow the entire pipe to vibrate up and down excessively, and that wears out the rubber hangers. You may also need to replace the rubber bumber on the body, they do get very hard and won't dampen vibration any more. Peter

Most likely the overlfow hoses are going bad and leaking. This will, of course, only get worse. Use only the factory hose to replace them, nothing else (except maybe viton) seems to hold up at all. They usually require replacement every three or four years. Sometimes they get rock hard, so if you do the job yourself, make sure you get all the old rubber off the injector nipples, otherwise it tends to slice the new hose open as you install it, making it leak as badly as the old ones. [MBZ] Club 123D car show pics
Last weekend Vince Layton and Club 123D sponsored the first annual All-123 car show. Nine cars in attendance, covering the spectrum from a NOS 240D to a not-so-new 240D, a 300CD convertible, and a bunch of daily drivers in between. I took a few pics of some of the more distinguished attendees: http://thomas.savage.org/123/ A good time was had by all, and many thanks to Vince for putting on such a great show. Tom

So I guess a turbo would be a rarity. Pity. I forgot to mention that I was considering a flex-joint in the horizontal section of the system, just aft of the rigid suspension mount on the transmission. That's where most seem to be fitted retrospectively. My wagon does not have a factory-fitted flex-joint in the header pipe (which is the original). Cheers Euan Euan - They were around all right, it is standard equipment on my '81 SD. But does your car have a turbo supercharger? If not, that may be the difference. I just looked at Randy's site for the exhaust system on an '85 turbo TD and they show a flex joint in the header pipe just like my SD. Maybe the NZ cars weren't turbos. Is that the case? Barry
