Re: [MBZ] Wheel Balancing
While I have a great Indie, I have always used the MB dealer for allignment and wheel balancing, Costs a few bucks more but the job is always spot on and know they know how to use a torque wrench, etc. John Freer On 11/13/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In a message dated 11/12/2006 5:32:46 P.M. US Mountain Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What experience are you having with wheel balancing- I brought my 300D in for snow tires and they put 4 Dunlop Graspics on the car. The car, in nice weather, has Goodyear Triple Treads. When the Goodyears were on the car, there was absolutely NO vibration in the steering wheel. With the Graspics, it is notible at 45 MPH and annoying at 60 MPH. The Goodyears were balanced by the MB dealership and the Graspics by a tire warehouse. Anyone had experience with this- the Graspics are snow tires- should I expect vibration? Being balanced, they could still be out of round, and the vibration could actually be more severe at 45 than 65. First thing I would do is look to see if they mounted the tires with the colored dot aligned with the wheel's tire valve. This is supposed to get the heaviest part of the tire opposite the heaviest part of the wheel. If they didn't do that, you got a rookie tire person, and a bad supervisor. Along with this, I would not accept a balanced wheel with more than 2 ounces of weights on it. Either get another tire or move the tire on the wheel to a position that requires less weights The road force balancing method is supposed one of the best methods but will cost you about $70 at say Discount Tire. regards, Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 146 K miles ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 126 trunk latch part
Anybody got a 126 at their friendly local U-Pull? I'm looking for the auxiliary trunk latch that some of them had, the extra male eyed tongue (and its mounting screws) on the trunk lid to the left of the main one . Ours is gone, and that prevents the trunk from being locked via the key. I don't know how/when ours went missing, but I know I haven't been able to lock the trunk via the key for a long time. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Fuel filter changes
Not really worried about it as I think my car has reasonable power for its type. Was just curious as to whether there were obvious symptoms I should keep in mind as this is all fairly new to me. I have had several diesels get massive increases in power after filter changes, when I had never realized they were slowing down. Usually you will notice a serious reduction, and difficulty climbing even mild grades. I always carry spare filters, and the tools to change them when driving any diesel vehicle anywhere. If you are in doubt, change them now and stop worrying about it. It's easy and cheap to do, and then you can keep around the old filters that still flow as emergency spares! Tyler How sudden should I expect the onset? As we all know, these old cars are not too speedy to begin with. I might not notice unless it becomes fairly obvious. This is a 76 115 300D that I am referring to. I have had it 2 summers now and have yet to change fuel filters. I bought some and have one in the trunk but have yet to install one. I got some of the clear inline prefilters too but my car does not appear to have one installed at this time. Re: [MBZ] Strange Front trye wear pattern
Toe in is excessive, have an alignment done with a spreader bar applied to correct for road forces (this is the normal Benz procedure, not all shops do it). You should also check the condition of tie rods, drag link, and idler arm as looseness in those parts will result in excessive toe. Re: [MBZ] low idle and pulsating idle when engine (not ambienttemp) iscold
Got to this yesterday. It (rack damper bolt) was all the way in. I turned it out, with engine running and thingschanged. Went all the way back in and nothing - it's only when adjusting out that things change and you can adjust it. Very interesting. SO, I adjusted out till the engine stopped shaking (although my air filter is shaking like CRAZY AND ALL 3 bushings are new AND still intact). So, the car starts without having to push the pedal (not as perfectly as before), no loping AND there USED to be a vibration (I thought alignment since tires were just balanced) around 75-80 mph. THAT IS ENTIRELY GONE. Aside from terrible filter shaking at idle (which is only reading 550 on the tach, used to be 750), the engine runs MUCH more smoothly. NOW: Should I turn the rack damper bolt out even further to reduce the filter shaking and will that bring my idle back up? Thanks, Chris Kaleb C. Striplin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In. Even with the new screw, it still has to be adjusted sometimes. Christopher McCann wrote: It has the updated screw, forget what color. It was installed about 1 year ago. But there is no engine loping (if that is the right word), i.e the engine does not vibrate at idle after the engine has warmed up just a little bit (1 minute)...although it does vibrate/shudder hard when trying to start if the accelerator is not pushed half way down and the idle plunges before the engine gets a little warm (under a minute) with accompanying shuddering and then stall...ditto with putting it in gear before it has had its TINY warm up time. If it's the rack damper screw, is it needing to go in or out? Chris Marshall Booth wrote: Christopher McCann wrote: adjusted valves Saturday night and no change whatsoever, unfortunately. Re: [MBZ] low idle and pulsating idle when engine (not ambienttemp)iscold
I have many shock donuts as I planned to do just this thing, but it never seemed THAT necessary...until now - it shakes like CRAZY...only the filter, not the engine. A clear case of resonance. increasing the idle by depressing the accelerator just a tad immediately stops the shaking...but i find it hard to fathom that my rack damper bolt AND idle screw both lost their tune on the same trip. Put the bumper over the nut when installing the air filter housing so that it is up against the valve cover. Quiets things down. Remember to grab the bumper when subsequently removing the air filter housing to avoid swearing when it disappears from sight.
