It wasn't a stampede at all. It was pretty well organized, with a list and
an hourly roll call. The Best Buy I've been camping at since Tuesday
afternoon was guaranteed at least 26 total and ended up with 34; 25 of
which

were the premium 60GB editions. In retrospect, it was well worth enduring
the pouring rain and extreme cold.

Anyone seriously interested please contact me off-list. I have 3 60GB and
2
20GB, ready to ship. All of them include the unreleased Talladega Nights
DVD

in the new Blu-Ray format for true 1080p resolution. You can see for
yourselves what these are currently going for on eBay.

Keep in mind that most of the Playstation consoles currently on eBay
aren't
even actual consoles. Most people are simply selling their pre-sale
tickets;

60% of which have no Playstation to back the ticket. All of the Gamespot
participating stores (e.g. EB Games) which did pre-orders received a lot
less than originally expected. Thus, many of the pre-sale tickets being
sold

on eBay for around $4,000 are simply rain checks for units being released
well into 1st quarter 2007.

$5,000 and it's yours.

We had a rather heated debate about wether MB turbo Diesels start in first

Re: [MBZ] Paint questions

2006-11-17 Thread Dave Wakin
You can get 1500 or even 2000 wetdry sand paper, sand them out, then buff
with an electric buffer.

Be very careful with the edges of the sandpaper, as they will leave
scratches. Let the paper soak over night in water before using as well.

If they are real bad, you can sand them and spray some new clear over top,
blending it it. Then use the paper and buffer to finish. This is assuming
you have BC/CC on your car.

My 1990 300SEL has pretty good paint, but it has some pretty significant

cheap carwashes. My owner's manual has a discussion about paint care in
it and it shows a picture that looks exactly like the haze and scratches
on my car. None of the scratches are through the paint, they are only
surface. I was wondering is anyone has had a car wet sanded to fix this

I tried waxing this SEVERAL times. I used the Meguiars 3 step process
that is supposed to remove most surface scratches, so I need something a

I'll also have to check the mounting setup again. The football is there,

I had a Volvo wagon for a while and I miss it. Station wagons are a
great compromise -- you can haul a lot of stuff, but they're not
top-heavy like a van and they usually get the same fuel economy as a
sedan. (Sometimes better -- the straight-backed wagon shape has better
aerodynamics than a typical sedan's notch-back.)

Re: [MBZ] RDB color, idle screw and throttle link. adjust

2006-11-17 Thread Jeff Zedic

You should look at the manual for this job and see the proper lengths to
adust the rods to. You adjust them so that the linkage hits the full load
stop with the pedal to the floor.

Do you have the sevice manula on CD?

I wrote "Seriously?" because I had no idea they made an escort diesel
wagon. I forgot about the Tempo diesels. I hate escorts and I always
thought they were lousy cars. I am sure my dislike is colored by the
fact that I was rear ended in my first benz by a woman driving an
escort. It was a 1971 250. I loved that car. A friend of mine spent
$7000 making it perfect. I bought it for $3000. It had gorgeous red
paint that was so deep you could fall into it. The interior (in white)
had been completely redone with all MB parts. It was a pretty fast car
with the 2.8 engine and the goofy carbs adjusted properly.

I loved that car. The stupid escort hit me just above the bumper going
pretty fast. It demolished the back end and nearly totaled the car. It
was never the same and I have yet to get past the fact that an escort
did that much damage to my first benz.

Took a harder look at it during a smoke break...it is gold. Now, it WAS all
the way in and I adjusted it out and it is fine. EXCEPT that my idle is too
low.

Question: Is too low an idle ALWAYS the idle adjust screw or could it be the
throttle linkages? (or both)? What do you adjust the linkages for?

The 1.6 gassers got over 40mpg at 60mph, the 2.0 diesel might touch 60mpg at
a steady 60mph. The non-wagon Escorts were actually light enough to be decent
drivers with 50hp, the wagons less so, and the Tempos are probably slower than
a 240D stick. My friend's well worn $200 Tempo could get 56mpg when driven
gently. It's not quite a match for a CRX HF or a Chevy Sprint, but it comes
a lot closer than a 190d could.

IIRC when I upgraded my blue SD, the new RDB I got from the dealer was
silver not gold. And it did the trick.

But that was a few years ago so maybe this got lost with some brain cells

Wow - that is exactly what the ticket says when the Indie upgraded mine...but
mine is silver! Time for a talk with Emery.

I better polish it good first to make absolutely certain it is silver and not
dirty goldish sorta silvery.

It was all the way in and if a gold bolt is all the way in to run right, the
IP is nearly shot and that is not a good thing.

I had a Topaz diesel, the starters for the car were $750 years ago. The
engine was made by Mazda and they got good gas mileage but could not get out
of their own way.

I got mine from a shop who could not get the car to run, seemed it ran out
of fuel never to run again. They burnt up starter trying. I paid $200 for
the car, found a start for $350 with 1 year warranty. Loosened fuel line,
pressurized fuel tank with shop air using a rag and air blower in fuel cap
neck, started right up, next day drove from NC to Florida in the car. One
year later and 4 starters I sold car for $1.

Re: [MBZ] I found one!

2006-11-17 Thread Jim Cathey
Well, I've got the one with the round connector, the "steaming POS,"
but

(They both have the same round connector, but the better design also
has a 2-pin rectangular connector. The wiring of these two round
connectors is of course quite different.)

hey, it actually works when it's plugged in! It functions properly
when the

driver's door is locked and unlocked. However, there must be a leak
somewhere because the pump never cycles off when it's hooked into the
system. I'm assuming that it must sense vacuum/pressure and cycle off
once

the doors are locked/unlocked.

It has not one, but _two_ long-throw small-diameter snap-action
diaphragm switch/valves inside. Huge wear points. Non-replaceable
parts. Also an electronics board to time-out the motor if it doesn't
shut off after awhile. Made by Hella, IIRC.

The superior replacement design has a small short-throw bidirectional
pressure switch, signal size not power size, and electronics to operate
it. Its motor runs one way for pressure, the other for vacuum. The
POS has moving valves to make the switch, and the motor only runs one
way. (It's a piston pump, actually that part looks pretty good. It
wouldn't matter which way the motor ran.) The new design has a rotary
pump of some sort.

The only way I could get it to stop running was either plugging the
outlet

with my finger (big nono according to Jim C), or by unplugging it. The

No, that's perfectly fine and the way you test the pump itself. If
yours

snapped (when both sucking and blowing) and shut off right away when
corked off rather than running on for awhile then it's (still) good.
In which case you have a leaking line or actuator. I recommend looking
in the trunk area first, those seem to be, for whatever reason, more
fragile than what's in the doors. You can cork off the line where
it goes to the filler flap door lock and trunk, if you re-plumb as
required to get the doors hooked to the pump. For that you'll just
have to work it out 'by eye', I no longer remember exactly how mine
was plumbed and yours might be a little different anyway. But it
ain't rocket science, it's just a single pipe that goes (eventually)
to six places. Seven, if you count the pump itself.

Another question is where the heck does the pump mount? Mine was just
lying
on the right side of the spare tire well with a foamy cover around it
and a

The SDL's (new-style) pump is mounted inside a foam football that's
attached in the RR corner of the spare tire well with a plastic bracket
and two plastic expand-o-screws. I'd expect the older car to have
something very similar.

If your old-style pump dies I believe it is possible to retrofit a
new-style pump to it, but I have never done so.

2006-11-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin

Your new alternator is bad.

carbucks wrote:

Need some list wisdom about a problem I'm having with my 84 300SD.

My wife was driving to work with most the electrical services on
(wipers, lights, fan, radio). The radio died first and then the
wipers. No alternator light came on. She couldn't see because of the
heavy rain, pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off.
It wouldn't start again. Had it towed home. She said the day before, the
alt light had come on briefly. After charging the battery, it started
right up.Decided to replace the alternator.

Completed that job today (the rain has stopped for the moment). When I
started her up, all three emergency brake, alt and brake pad lights as
well as the fuel reserve light stayed on even after the engine started.
They would go out if I revved the engine, only to return at idle. Drove
the car down the street and back and the lights finally went out. Took
it for a longer drive and I heard the fan belt squealing. A few minutes
later the belt stopped making noise, but the alt light was glowing
faintly no matter what the engine speed.

Returned home and shut her down. Now when I go to start it, the only
lights that come on are the glow plug and seat belt. They both go off at
the appropriate times.

Any suggestions about next steps?

Thanks in advance,

is the best place to get a definitive answer to this question.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD Alternator mystery

2006-11-17 Thread LarryT
Along with the GP relay, check to make sure the rear window defogger is not
on all the time - they also draw a lot of juice.
My old W108 used to drain the battery when I got into the bad habit of
leaving the rear defogger on - started keeping it off except when needed and
battery problem stopped.

AS far as a new alt being bad - got a bad one a couple of months ago from
Rusty - they replaced it instantly without questions. I also replaced the
battery at the same time - IMO the battery was old and could not recover
from being drained so far.

The alt light cannot be trusted to accurately portray the health of the
charging system, IMHO. As Jim C. suggests, a clamp-on DC ammeter is very
helpful as is some of the other battery/charging system tools.

Sears has some on sale at this time IIRC.
Good luck -

Re: [MBZ] Dash board cracks

2006-11-17 Thread LarryT
I had some damage to the dash in my W123 around the ign key area - the blue
top material had been pulled away exposing the dark yellow foam below. I
investigated many possible fixes and eventually settled on filling the area
with body filler - I used Evercoat Euro-Soft Polyester Glazing Putty. The
glazing putty often found in tubes like toothpaste is unsatisfactory IMO.

After filling and shaping the area I sprayed a blue dye to match the rest of
the dash. I did not match the pattern on the dash - where I made the repair
it was not necessary. If it is needed a material (cloth or a piece of
dash??) with the proper pattern could be found and pressed into the still
soft filler creating the pattern.

Anyway - that's what I did and the area is not noticable - and I covered the
top of the dash with a DashTopper.

Thanlfully, the dash in my W124 300D is in great condition.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD Alternator mystery

2006-11-17 Thread Trampas
When I worked as a mechanic I was the local electrical expert. The shop I
worked at however did not work on Mercedes, but one guy had his alternator
replaced twice on his 300SD, and was at his wits end as to why it would not
charge. So he brought it to the shop and with clamp on amp meter I noticed
alternator was putting out 60+ amps and the battery voltage was around 12V.
Glow plug relay was stuck on, the guy was mad. He had paid for two
alternators from other shops and we told him glow plug relay was bad. Thus
he started in on were we sure that was the problem. People are funny if you
had a bad experience at one shop they blame them all.

Another question is where the heck does the pump mount? Mine was just lying
on the right side of the spare tire well with a foamy cover around it and a
metal bracket next to it. I guess I'll have to see one in place. I found
an '82 300SD that may have some parts on it that I need, so I may just "feel
that one up" to see how mine should be including the rear headliner panel.

the pump should time out if working properly with/without any door
lock function.

The only way I could get it to stop running was either plugging the outlet
with my finger (big nono according to Jim C), or by unplugging it. The
device on the outside of the housing that has a spring loaded piece would
snap to one side or the other depending on where I positioned the driver's
door lock. Where do I go next with this. The central locking system isn't
as big of a thing to me as the SEAT SPRINGS and POWER SEAT MECHANISM FIX.

Martin Buck

I have also read the section about adjusting the linkage but I hesitate

idle

speed. Or am I reading too much into the "sophistication of the Idle

To describe the problem - when the accelerator is released and the engine
speeds drops to idle often it will run slightly rough as if running too
slow. If the AC is on the idle seems to drop to the lower speed. Even
with

the AC off, it still drops off but not as low. This started a couple of
months ago.

Anyway, it seems as though the electronic control would need to be
checked.

THERE is NO rack damper screw on an OM60x engine (or any engine except a
617.95).

As to testing the idle, you need to disable the electric control and set
the idle to 620 rpm and reconnect the idle actuator and it should then
be at about 680 rpm.

All described in
http://manuals.braingears.com/124_DISC1/Program/Engine/602_603/07.1-2053.pdf

The speed should remain the same whether the car is in or out of gear OR
the AC is on or off once the engine has warmed up. ANY connection within
the circuitry for the idle control COULD be causing the problem. Could
be a bad engine speed sensor (rare) or a cad connection of the sensor
into the wiring harness (I've had several of those go bad on MY OM60x
engines) or dirty contacts on the overvoltage protection relay (but when
they go out usually the tach goes out and the AC compressor won't
engage) or a bad connection to the idle speed actuator. Could also be a
bad engine temp sensor and last it could be the electronic diesel
control computer itself () but that rather rare as well.

Running this down WILL be very time consuming/expensive unless you are
very lucky or you have LOTS of free time.

My 1st diesel - a W123 78 240D had spots here and there - but I should have

wholesale prices. It's surprising what some original owners will do when
they get ready for a new car. Spoke with a owner a while back who let his
W126 go way too cheaply. But he was ready to move on and didn't like giving
the dealer a trade-in. Someone came out with a great car with almost 200k
that had been maintained by the book. IMHO, there's a group of MB buyers
out there who know nothing about their cars except they're a status symbol,
are comfortable andare well made (well, they used to be). So, when
something goes wrong it goes to the dealer where it's cheaper for the owner
to pay 2-3X's the going rate because their time is more valuable than the
price they're paying to get the car back on the road as quickly as possible.

Of course, this is just a personal opinion and I have no real data other
than a few anecdotal stories.

The rack damper ONLY damps the lope that is caused by the natural
resonance that exists in the OM617.95 injection pump. It does NOT reduce
any other cause of engine roughness. Old style (silver) rack damper
screws may NOT damp the lope even when tightened all the way in!! That's
why the revised (gold) rack damper screws were designed!
