And there's no long term cost to coal?

I'll grant that the mining cost may be a wash. But with coal, you dump
millions of tons of CO2 in the air. Then you have to dispose of the ash
& you can't just bury the stuff because it's very acitic and will leach
into the water system. Then you have all of the combustion byproducts
that used to go out the stak and are now cleaned by scrubbers. Just
because sulfur dioxide and a dozen or more cancer causing agents are not
going out the stacks anymore does not mean they are not being produced.
They are being cleaned out of the exhaust and still need to be dealt
with (disposed of)

It will considerably dampen the enthusiasm of even the most ardent
adherents
if they honestly consider the entire life cycle of nuclear power, from
uranium mining + processing, through enrichment to plant construction,
operations and waste disposal and plant decommissioning. It's quite a

2007-04-12 Thread John Robbins
Seriously, whats your beef with uranium mining?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mining
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium_mining

The coal article goes into much much more detail, but the risks seem to
be almost identical. Have to make sure dangerous gasses are not present
in the mines or contaminate the environment. Waste piles are exposed to
rain water and damage the environment, etc. To me the benefit of
uranium mining is that the tonnage is much much less. I imagine one
could argue that the uranium is more potent and longer lasting, but I
seriously doubt the radiation of the waste pile isn't strictly
monitored. Coal does also have the benefit that you have to have a
reclamation plan in order to start a new mine.

No idea on the processing + enrichment costs, but the costs of coal
aren't all that small either. How many tons of the coal do you have to
move around (admittedly trains are good/efficient at that kinda thing)?
I'm sure there is processing involved with coal as well. Not as much
processing, but it might be comparable when the volume is taken into
account.

Coal wins the operations deal. Although the clean coal plants probably
are much closer due to more regulations and equipment to clean it up. I
think this is a problem that will be solved with time for the nuke
plants. Capitalism will take care of that if nuke's want to be a viable
power option.

Waste disposal coal puts all kinds of nasty things into the
atmosphere (including many times more radiation than a nuclear power
plant). On the order of tons of material a day. Nuclear plants have a
much smaller volume of waste, and while it is extremely potent, it is
much easier to control. If it wasn't such a political hot topic with
lots of stupidity involved, I'm sure we can figure out a good way to
store the stuff (I remember reading about changing all the liquid waste
into a crystalline form so there won't be any leaks to ground water).

Here's an idea, how expensive would it be to bottle up all of the coal
power plants emissions to the same level as a nuke plant?

I don't argue that the whole nuclear life cycle is cheap. It is very
expensive so is coal's (although not as expensive). Saying that
nuclear power is bad because of its cost is irrelevant. The cost must
be compared to the alternatives. IMO, nuclear is more expensive $$
wise, but less expensive on the environment when compared to most
alternatives out there.

andrew strasfogel wrote:

Yep!!! Also, you can install 'scrubbers' to clean up coal a lot, but I
don't think you can clean out the radioactive nastiness.

And if you don't have scrubbers... I don't see how *anyone* can prefer

O'FALLON, Mo. -- Step down the stark, white stairs into Jeremy Mehrle's
basement and meet his Apple computer collection.

He's got 99 computers. No, wait. Make that 100. He just got another last
night, he said during a recent visit to his home about 35 miles west of
St.
Louis. Dozens of his Apple Macintosh computers are on display down here, a
techie's dream party pad.

Mehrle, 29, appears to recognize that there's an inherent, well, geekiness
to his computer collection, but he's got a sense of humor about it.
Perhaps
at this level of commitment, it's actually geek chic.

(Just
imagine how much technology could be destroyed with just one spilled
drink.)

The basement is wired with 20-amp circuits. He doesn't just display his
computers, he runs them when guests come over. Classic screen savers, like
flying toasters with wings, flutter across screens. When friends stop by,
they can play old-school games like "StarCraft" on machines networked
together.

For special events, like New Year's Eve, he'll play videos on several
monitors or set up strobe effects on multiple machines, creating a
rave-like
atmosphere.

"I think it'd make you more inclined to dance, even though I don't dance,

Along one wall, he's got every color - or "flavor" - of iMac. While the
first one, in "Bondi Blue," sits alone, the other 12 are arranged in rows
in
the order they were released. They begin with the first colors, like
"Blueberry" and "Tangerine," to the last of the bunch, known as "Snow."

Another wall has nine iconic Macintoshes arranged in chronological order.
The computers range from the original Macintosh with 128 kilobytes of
memory
to the 20th-anniversary Mac from 1997. Mehrle bought it on eBay and thinks
he paid about $800 for it.

The online auction site has been a big help to Mehrle, once he began
amassing a collection. He first got into the machines by using his dad's
IBM
personal computer. From there, he started collecting computers in general,
Commodores and Tandys, Ataris and IBMs. He was interested in how different
ones worked and how they evolved.

Then he spotted an iMac G4, a computer with a rounded base and a
swivel-head, flat-screen monitor.

"As soon as I saw it, I was like, 'I have to have this computer,'" he
said.
Mehrle hadn't been a huge fan of Apple computers, but he became one.

"The design, the user interface, the way it worked made sense," he said.

Sometimes people donated their old computers to him, but he largely
shopped
for them on eBay. Some he has acquired for as little as $10, because as he
points out, he for the most part buys them when they're considered
obsolete.

Leander Kahney, managing editor of Wired News, has written about the Mac
subculture in a book and on his blog, "Cult of Mac." He said a lot of
people
don't throw out their old Macs, sometimes turning them into fish tanks or
arranging a display.

But Mehrle's Macs are something special, Kahney said after seeing photos.
"It's the most incredible collection I've ever seen."

Mehrle doesn't have every Apple model ever made.

"If I did, that would be awesome, but my girlfriend would probably leave
me," he said.

Despite a new full-time job at an Apple store, he's actually slowing his
pace considerably when it comes to getting additional computers. His
girlfriend, Katrina Bibb, is threatening to get a new pet every time he
brings home another machine.

The first floor of their home is brightly painted and decorated with
furniture that recalls the stark lines and contemporary curves Mehrle

uranium mining + processing, through enrichment to plant construction,
operations and waste disposal and plant decommissioning. It's quite a trip.

don't think you can clean out the radioactive nastiness.

And if you don't have scrubbers... I don't see how *anyone* can prefer

O'FALLON, Mo. -- Step down the stark, white stairs into Jeremy Mehrle's
basement and meet his Apple computer collection.

He's got 99 computers. No, wait. Make that 100. He just got another last
night, he said during a recent visit to his home about 35 miles west of St.

His
bar is made out of 30 Mac Classics arranged next to and on top of each
other. Guests can drink at the bar, "but no one ever does," he noted. (Just
imagine how much technology could be destroyed with just one spilled drink.)

The basement is wired with 20-amp circuits. He doesn't just display his
computers, he runs them when guests come over. Classic screen savers, like
flying toasters with wings, flutter across screens. When friends stop by,
they can play old-school games like "StarCraft" on machines networked
together.

For special events, like New Year's Eve, he'll play videos on several
monitors or set up strobe effects on multiple machines, creating a rave-like
atmosphere.

"I think it'd make you more inclined to dance, even though I don't dance, I
guess," he said. "I've never been to a rave, so I'm just basing that on
'Alias,'" he joked, referring to the hip TV spy thriller.

Along one wall, he's got every color - or "flavor" - of iMac. While the
first one, in "Bondi Blue," sits alone, the other 12 are arranged in rows in
the order they were released. They begin with the first colors, like
"Blueberry" and "Tangerine," to the last of the bunch, known as "Snow."

Another wall has nine iconic Macintoshes arranged in chronological order.
The computers range from the original Macintosh with 128 kilobytes of memory
to the 20th-anniversary Mac from 1997. Mehrle bought it on eBay and thinks
he paid about $800 for it.

The online auction site has been a big help to Mehrle, once he began
amassing a collection. He first got into the machines by using his dad's IBM
personal computer. From there, he started collecting computers in general,
Commodores and Tandys, Ataris and IBMs. He was interested in how different
ones worked and how they evolved.

Then he spotted an iMac G4, a computer with a rounded base and a
swivel-head, flat-screen monitor.

"As soon as I saw it, I was like, 'I have to have this computer,'" he said.
Mehrle hadn't been a huge fan of Apple computers, but he became one.

"The design, the user interface, the way it worked made sense," he said.

Sometimes people donated their old computers to him, but he largely shopped
for them on eBay. Some he has acquired for as little as $10, because as he
points out, he for the most part buys them when they're considered obsolete.

Leander Kahney, managing editor of Wired News, has written about the Mac
subculture in a book and on his blog, "Cult of Mac." He said a lot of people
don't throw out their old Macs, sometimes turning them into fish tanks or
arranging a display.

The first floor of their home is brightly painted and decorated with
furniture that recalls the stark lines and contemporary curves Mehrle likes
from old science-fiction shows.

The rest of the place isn't overrun with computers like the basement, but
Bibb notes, "The bathrooms are the only rooms where we don't have
computers."

Of Mehrle's collection, she said, "I like how he displays them. I like that
he has a passion.

"To me, a computer is a functional thing," she added. "It's not something
you would ogle over the design."

As I recall, the LM317 must drop at least 1.5V, so while not a great
device for battery operated devices, I think it's a reasonable choice
for this project. It's also sturdy and self-protecting. If the supply
voltage gets too high and the regulator is trying to dump too much
heat, it will drop the output voltage till the current draw decreases
enough that it's again safe. As long as the voltages stay with the
correct polarity, those regulators are tought to kill.

I haven't gone back to look at all the posts, but if the LM317 is set
up as a _current_ regulator, then the LED should always be happy.

2007-04-12 Thread Potter, Tom E
I have yet to hear ANYONE mention that coal is filled with radon
(radioactive) gas. Coal piles emit much more radioactivity than any
nuclear power plant.

I am always struck by the fact that those who oppose nuclear power are
the same folks who just ADORE skiing in the Colorado mountains (high
elevation = more radiation + the rocks are the source of uranium), or
they LOVE the beaches of California (soaking up additional radiation).

Tom Potter (who worked in nuclear plants for 6 years)

P.S. I'm wearing my Nomex drawers, so fire away.

The coal mines aren't the issue. Strip mines can become lakes and
underground mines can be back filled.

It looks pretty nice! The trans is worth more than $600. I think he means

The coal mines aren't the issue. Strip mines can become lakes and
underground mines can be back filled.

How do we reclaim the CO2 emissions from all of the coal we'd burn?

As a matter of fact, coal mines can be successfully reclaimed.

gasoline models, no. Diesels, yes.

86 models had the infamous trap oxidizer for CA only and in 87 all
States got it.

Last few years, the latest E Class CDI has not been available in CA
and three other East Coast States. Don't think Oregon has any
restrictions.

Careful, Kaleb. I've come close to nominating your back yard as a nuke dump
site, cause it is already a toxic waste site.

engine could use a good detailing and the carpets and trunk look like
they've seen better days, but a big thumping 6.9 for less than a Honda
civic, I'd say there's a lot of value in it. I'd put it on my "maybe" list
for sure. :-)

There's still such a thing, though now the laws are the same in Oregon

else.

2007-04-12 Thread Loren Faeth
Raving about Diesel Purge aside, there is a whole series of other
things that can cause this. It is commonly described as
"nailing." Two of the most common causes, aside from crud buildup
are a bad injection nozzle or a broken prechamber. There is a little
ball supprted on a pin inside the prechamber. sometimes the pin will break.

Bob, you should go snag it. Maybe all it needs is a glow plug. I
think the 77 still has the loop type, doesn't it? If they are pencil
type, then maybe all it needs is a fuse or a glow relay.

Re: [MBZ] 240D Knocking

2007-04-12 Thread OK Don

There are two ways to used Diesel Purge - pooring a can or two into
the fuel tank, or disconnecting the fuel lines under the hood, and
running the engine solely on the Diesel Purge. The later method
(recommended) will not do anything to the filters. The first method
could clean stuff out of the tank that could clog the filters. The
second method (fully explained on the can) will do the most good in
the least amount of time.

How will I know if the filters need changing after DieselPurging?
