Thanks for ruining my day. I bought TWO SETS of Bridgestone RE050A PP tires
in late February which was too soon to be eligible.

Further, the MBCA/MBUSA customer loyalty agreement which I thought would get
me a $1500 rebate on the '08 C-Class I hope take delivery on about 9/1 is
specifically excluded.

I am thinking of selling it but wanted to get some feedback from the

peanut gallery concerning value.

The good:
 - 1979 300TD non-turbo
 - no structural damage or rust, body is solid
 - transmission shifts correctly
 - good vacuum (locks work correctly)
 - Alloys with correct benz tires
 - 290K miles
 - runs like a champ! Seriously it is really strong. (probably not the
original motor)
 - Good rear struts/hydropneumatic system, oil & filter are fresh
 - front balljoints replaced
 - upper control arms will be replaced
 - rear subframe bushing will be replaced
 - Climate control replaced with manual controls from 240D

The bad:
 - 79 == no turbo and no sunroof!
 - paint is not bad, but it is a respray of the factory color and has a
few blemishes. No peeling or systemic failure, just some small bubbles
here and there.
 - windshield area *had* leaks, they are fixed now but not before it
swamped the interior and ruined the carpet. Floorboards have been
scraped clean, carpet replaced with home-fitted stuff from Home Depot.
Actually it looks pretty good, I found a salt&pepper gray that looks

very German.
 - Rear spare tire/tool area still leaks
 - AC does not work and would require a new compressor, system flush,
and some spirited tinkering to integrate with the 240D climate
controls.

basically this car is showing its age but it is still solid and with a
good motor and rebuilt suspension it has a lot of miles left in it.
Think of it less a show car and more of a candidate for the

"million-mile taxi" award. With some enthusiasm this could be a

there.

Guys, these little mishaps are just gifts from above. Think of all the
times you wanted a nice little TIG welder, but didn't really have a use for
it. You can now tell your wives of all the money you'll save fixing the
little boo boos that happen in the driveway from time to time.

Last weeks little scoot down the highway which resulted in a broked timng
belt, and a tow home...nothing more than a chance to build my confidence
before having a look at the chain on the new to me 300E, and maybe updating
the tensioners on the old 911. It all worded out for a reason. April is
going to be belt, chain and valve month here. hee hee.

And if this doesn't make you feel better, remember, oil pans are a lot
easier and cheaper to fix than legs.:-)

Its quite a bit of fun when you forget to tighten it at all... Dumps
about a gallon of oil in the time it takes to figure out whats wrong.
That was fun... not quite as fun as breaking a $300 oil pan though!!

[MBZ] Don't you hate it when you do something dumb?

2007-04-23 Thread R A Bennell
Been running around in the old 300D for a week or so leaving a trail of black
oil spots and bigger spots when I
park. Had changed the oil last fall just before putting it away for the winter.
Started leaking as soon as I
started driving it this spring. Assumed it was the drain plug on the pan not
being quite tight enough as it has
been damaged and brazed at some point in its life before I got it. Bought a
pan, gasket and plug from Rusty last
summer but it is still sitting in the box.

Crawled under and tightened the drain plug a bit - but it seemed fairly tight
and did not want to cause damage.
Still leaking. Getting embarassing as there is the trail of black spots all
over the lane at the entrance to my
garage and on the front street in front of the house, as well as in my lot at
work.

Went out Sat morning to a store and upon walking back to my car, noted the
puddle was off centre to the driver's
side. Bingo - brain kicked in. It was not the drain plug - it was the filter
housing. Tightened it a little and no
more drips. Why did it take me a week to notice??

That said I'd love one. I've got this farm and a right proper farm tractor to

Sorry to hear of your bad luck. Got to drive you crazy when you go out of your
way to do a good job and keep the
car away from ham fisted mechanics and then have something like this happen to
you. Hindsight is always great too
as you usually realize you should have done something slightly different.

I almost had a similar incident this past week. I have been replacing the brake
rotors and pads on both ends of my
Supercrew - as well as the rear axle seals. Outside on the gravel pad beside
the garage as the garage is too full
to get in onto the concrete. Started the jack the truck up and realized the
jack was not rolling. Put it back down
and dragged out a 3X4 foot scrap of 3/4 plywood for the jack to sit on. No
further problem - but given what
happened to you, I am even more thankful that I noticed in time to do something
about it.

In some (non-freezing) locales, you can pour a slab and bolt your

In other places, you need to place footings below the frost line to
support
your garage. In my part of Michigan, the footings have to be at least
42"

below grade level. A pole barn with a 30' span requires 18" diameter by
at least 8" thick concrete footings. The quick way is to auger some
18" holes in the ground, call for the concrete truck to pour the
footings,
and then start standing the poles on the footings. There are builders
who

will erect a 30x40x8' pole building (wood frame, steel siding and roof)
for about $7,000, not counting floor, wiring, insulation, or plumbing.
Shingle roof and vinyl siding tends to be a slight cost increase, those
materials are cheaper than steel, but take more labor to install.

I'm still in the planning phase on a 30x56x12' with living quarters and
space for about 6 cars. Thinking about either going to 10' to save some
money (have to use a floor plate car lift and not run it up all the way)
or going 16' tall so have attic storage above the apartment. I'm looking
to pay about 11-12k for materials, and put considerable time into
building

it. IIRC, you have physical limitations and would be hiring the
installation
of whatever you buy.
The good steel buildings (framework like a factory building) cost 1.5-2x
as much as wood frames for the materials, but assemble quicker, and the
installed price difference isn't that bad. Olympia makes some garage
size

buildings, but the cost tends to get high if you need a steep roof slope
for local winter conditions.

2007-04-23 Thread Jim Cathey

I think I may have messed up the Right channel on the thing,
and I don't think it was in this series of operations. I
have worked on this particular Europa Cassette before when
it had bad volume control problems. I may have miswired
the volume control PCB when I put it back together. (It's
a rats-nest too.) Right sounds weak, and the tone control
doesn't affect the (otherwise good) Left channel.

Anybody got one they can pop the bottom cover off of and
get a good photograph of the wiring on the bottom of that
volume control board?

Thanks Mitch -
I'm in Va - frost line is 32" IIRC, and snow load is not too bad - the
buildings are made by Newmart Builders - the buildings are partially
modular - i.e., my 20x36 can be made longer by adding another bay.
http://www.newmartbuildersinc.com/ buildings are sold by independent
franchisee's with the company useing a construction team to erect each build
on the buyers site - buyer prepares a level site and can be gavel, grass,
dirt, concrete, anything because its the buyers responsibility. The 3 bay
garage I'm considering will be built in a day -

[MBZ] OT; Talk me out of buying this

2007-04-23 Thread Curt Raymond
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330111479538&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:us
Nicest old Saab I've ever seen in New England. This guy is pretty obviously
into Saabs too...
Its about 3 1/2 hours away from my place and with gas prices rising a car that
gets double the gas mileage of the pickup my wife drives would be a welcome
addition. Plus the old Saabs are really, really cool.

Mercedes content: if I don't buy this car I'm still looking for a cheap diesel
Benz...

A friend built a 30 X 40 X 12' shop using conduit and roofing metal. He
bought a Harbor Freight bender and put it up with the help of his wife.
Even made it two-tone. It survived Katrina coming through here as a
category one hurricane. Pretty cheap.

Re: [MBZ] Okiebenz goes to Maine

2007-04-23 Thread Curt Raymond

Depends on when and where. My folks live in Portland. We'll be up there around
Memorial day to go to camp which is in Caribou.

If you're in southern Maine I'd consider making a special trip.

What'd bring you up this way? You driving up? If you are you pretty much have
to go through MA to get there, the grill here is very rarely cold for very long.

Larry, where are you located?
In some (non-freezing) locales, you can pour a slab and bolt your building to
the
top of it.
In other places, you need to place footings below the frost line to support
your garage. In my part of Michigan, the footings have to be at least 42"
below grade level. A pole barn with a 30' span requires 18" diameter by
at least 8" thick concrete footings. The quick way is to auger some
18" holes in the ground, call for the concrete truck to pour the footings,
and then start standing the poles on the footings. There are builders who
will erect a 30x40x8' pole building (wood frame, steel siding and roof)
for about $7,000, not counting floor, wiring, insulation, or plumbing.

I'm looking
to pay about 11-12k for materials, and put considerable time into building
it. IIRC, you have physical limitations and would be hiring the installation
of whatever you buy.
The good steel buildings (framework like a factory building) cost 1.5-2x
as much as wood frames for the materials, but assemble quicker, and the
installed price difference isn't that bad. Olympia makes some garage size
buildings, but the cost tends to get high if you need a steep roof slope
for local winter conditions.
Mitch.

Thanks, I popped the cover off and turned it 1/2 turn and it tightened
up my shifts. I had a bit of a slip / flare in the 1-2.
I don't have a MityVac but am going to get one so I can check the
pressure coming into the transmission.

My symptoms were a slow softening of the 1-2 shift over the last few
months, and generally softer shifts on all. Maybe there is a leak
somewhere and the transmission is getting less pressure, that might
explain needing to turn up the "T".

Transmission is rebuilt MB with 19k on it.

But Marshall is right, no way to tell anything without the MityVac.

If I buy one, anyone in MA CT RI is welcome to borrow it as needed.

It seems like that woulc be a great idea, except for the gell point of
animal fats being higher than that of plant based fats. Lard, chicken
fat,
and tallow are all solid at room temperature and higher. Ghee which is
basicly clarified butter, is also solid at room temperature. Olive
oil,
rapeseed, and most other vegetable fats are liquid to much lower
temperatures. This could limit the usefulness of biodiesel made from
these
fats to warmer climates/summertime use only. On the other hand, bacon
flavored biodiesel exhaust! Yummy!

Back in my college years, when all I had was the stately pace of the
200D, I loved going for a fling on my R75/5. Cures the need for
speed that keeps most people away from the steady pace of a 200D or
240D automatic. Kinda similar to when I lived in Hawaii, Whenever I
had enough heat, I'd go clean the walkin freezer. That always cured
any desire I had to see winter.

Yep, plumbing and power can be installed as easily as a stick built
building. Try - the Home Depot building is an option. I presently have a
10x18 barn. But the cost of the metal building at $6300 for 20x36 is a
better deal for me than $17k for the smaller 16x32 from HD.

It uses 3"x2" rectangular tubing for reinforcement. Prettey substantial.
Thankfully, tornadoes are not common here.

I know, I am somewhat concerned about a "metal building" - seems like a
wooden building is more permanent. Except for rust the metal should be long
lasting. The metal has a coating which is supposed to protect it from
chips, cracks, etc.

I looked into metal buildings that are built with a metal frame - I-beams,
channels, and then traditional roofing and vinyl siding. It looked exactly
like a stick building. The 20x32 that matched my 2 story colonial was $5500
delivered but not installed. I;d have to prep the location and erect the
building.

As I said it's an option -

How does it make more economic sense to crush vs. continue parting them out,
since you seem to have unlimited free outdoor storage? Or do you only crush
cars that are rusty and without any marketable interior parts?

Re: [MBZ] Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

2007-04-23 Thread Jim Cathey

Regarding yesterday's trailer full of rubble debacle...

I looked things over, and nothing seems to be damaged. Wild. Anyway,
I knocked off that nasty wooden rack that was hacked into the stake
pockets. It immediately started to look better. Then I backed it up
to a likely dump site and ran an extension cord to it. I chucked my
1/2" drill on it and let her rip. Nothing. The dump valve has three
positions, and the drill has two directions. I eventually found one
combination that lifted it. As advertised it went right up, then I
released the ratty tailgate and out went the remainder of the rubble.
I used a shovel to scrape out the residue, I don't want any dirt
trapping moisture for rust to grow. I had a good look while it was
up, and while the undercarriage is very rusty the metal is also very
thick and I don't think it has even begun to be compromised. The dump
mechanism is interesting, and really does look like it might be from
the forties, it has that molded look. It has a three-position valve
with a linkage on it, and two PTO type square shafts sticking out of
it, much like an old gear-driven house jack my grandfather had. One
spins faster than the other, the shaft is hooked to the faster one.
It's a completely self-contained unit, I see no practical means to
hook the Mog's hydraulics to it. I think the PO's idea of hooking a
starter motor and battery box to it is a decent one. Anyway, yanking
the valve handle brought it right back down. The dump bed dropped
right back into proper place, it doesn't look like it was racked any.
The rear crossmember is all bent up, but I happen to know it was
already that way when I bought it. The (heavy) 'spare', the other
wheel from one side's dualie pair, is flat. I could tell that when I
dropped it out of the truck. It 'squashed' rather than bouncing. I
put it on edge under the trailer so it won't deteriorate any further.

The hydraulic line from the brake drums is cut off up near the tongue
and is very rusty. Looks like it's never been part of this particular
trailer's gear. I hate to think what I'll find if I opened the drums
up! Another project, of course. The trailer has a differential, so
it's definitely homebrew of some sort.

I chocked the wheels with some of the rubble, then I got my other
winch-based camper jack out (one is on the boat trailer's tongue) and
used it to lift the trailer off the pintle hitch. No problem. I
drove away and the truck felt normal to me. I parked everything back
where it belongs. The trailer is actually pretty well balanced when
empty, I can lift the tongue fairly easily by hand. I set the tongue
down on a cinder block.

So it cost me an extra $6 to keep the pintle hitch a second day, I
think that so far the cost of my stupidity has been pretty low.

For some reason the front metal panel of the bed has been cut away.
There was some nasty 2x6 wood and metal strapping in its place. Open
like that, as the bed level is well above the tongue, I suppose it's
possible to carry some very long material in the bed. The trailer
needs some serious love with the welder to be nice again, and a heavy
sandblast and painting session. Don't know when/if I will ever get to
it, but it's not going to get much worse waiting. It would probably
be best if I could put a hinged front panel on it like the tailgate.
(Which itself needs some repair.) Someday!

Re: [MBZ] 240D won't start-- Vacuum??

2007-04-23 Thread Jim Cathey

It stalled when it came off the ramps, and refuses to restart..

My guess is that you have a cracked fuel line, and being up
at a weird angle stressed things enough to let air into the
lines. You need a session with the primer pump, and should
probably expect to do some sleuthing looking for small leaks
in the fuel lines.

appear yellow (the last branches, with the check valve) there's a
brown and blue one,

The yellow ones are the locks. One to the vacuum tank, one off
to the valve in the door. The brown/blue one is the key shutoff.
Red is heater valve (if you have such), green is AC flaps. Blue
is coupe seatback locks. Black is anything left, like cruise,
tranny, vents, etc. Just hook the brown/blue one up to the
tap and let the others suck air. (They won't!) Should make
quite a difference to the shutoff time of the car.

If your brakes are fine it is almost always a leaking actuator,
usually in the door system, sometimes in the AC flaps. Rarely
elsewhere, though not unheard of.

I am selling a 1995 E300D with 190,850miles on it. White exterior with
clean, gray MBTex interior, premium stereo, 6-disk changer, many power
options. It's a great car, but the engine will likely require rebuild
or replacement. The engine starts but has what was described as a "rod
knock". A faulty repair of fuel injector seals resulted in the engine
over-revving - forcing too much fuel into the cylinders. If this is
something that interests you, I can provide additional detail. The car
is located in Charlotte, NC. Selling for $2,600.

I'm up in Canada. I keep reading about all these great deals on products at
Wal Mart and Cosco. I run there, only to find one case of generic brand
dino juice on the shelf, and it's usually 5W30. We poor Canadian always get
the leftovers. hee hee Wal Mart car sections here consist of a garden hose,
some floor mats with a disney logo on them, and some cheap chrome hub caps,
4 for $20 usually. :-)

Glenn,
I have some of that on hand and I'll give it a shot.I wash my cars often, so
brake dust is never a problem, but although this new to me benz was washed
regularly, I don't think the drive through got the dust out of all the
corners, and it's just caked on over the years. Once clean, I think
maintaining them should be easy, but getting to that point is proreal work.

[MBZ] Tips for getting caked on brake dust off rims

2007-04-23 Thread Glenn Brown

Ed,
In good weather it's a good idea to wash the wheels thoroughly with soap and
water weekly so the brake dust does't build up. I tend to use Simple Green
which works real well at getting rid of the brake dust. Good luck.

Re: [MBZ] 240D won't start-- Vacuum??

2007-04-23 Thread Sunil Hari

you could just turn off the vac system by sticking a golf tee in at the
Y-connection (maybe it's a Y, can't recall properly) and just disabling the
vacuum locks while you're trying to get it started.

try fresh fuel in the filters and a valve adjustment, as well as a fresh(er)
battery. and be sure to check (and replace) all the old fuses.

The car has historically HAD a vac leak-- to shut it off, you turned

What I know is that I have a car with a known vacuum issue, that
realistically had that system manipulated and now it won't start..

..Everything appears connected, so I don't see an easy fix.

As I look under the hood, I see one 'main' vac line-- going straight
to the brake booster.

There are two tees off of that.

One goes to the firewall, where it branches three times, with the
middle branch having what appears to be a check valve, then branching
twice, before entering the firewall. All 5 of those 'branches' appear
color coded-- which will hopefully aid what I'm going to ask.. Two
appear yellow (the last branches, with the check valve) there's a
brown and blue one, a black one (that go to the IP) etc..

The second one goes 'on top' of the valve cover to what appears to be
some sort of valve. It has one branch capped off, and a tee with what
appears to be another check valve on one branch.. These lead to black
and black and brown striped leads that, again, go to the IP.

What I'm hoping to do-- is isolate out the central locking 'branch' or
branches-- to see if I can't get the car started..

Oh-- since it wasn't starting, and I'd planned on replacing both fuel
filters--
that is done, I filled both with ATF, as I'd previously heard that it's a
good clean
and lube for the IP.. I tried cracking the injectors, to reprime those--
and
found
little if any fuel coming out-- leading me to believe the IP isn't getting
sufficient
vaccuum to 'spray..'

I looked under the hood of my '84 300SD.. UH-- the engine looks sort
of familiar, but the vac system is wholly different, with exception of
4 vac lines leading into the IP.. (So that wasn't a help!!)

SO-- anyone who can direct me to a color code, or tell me which goes
to what would be doing me an incredible service..

I considered hooking a vac gauge to one of the tees, while I cranked,
to make sure the vac pump itself hadn't failed..

In my VW diesels-- vac pump failure meant brake effort worthy of
stopping a downhill speeding overloaded truck.. The breaking in the
240D has NEVER shown that, previously..

The vac pump looks to be a lot harder to get out, on this engine, than
the VW (one bolt on the top of the motor!) so I'm really hoping that's
not the case..

Okay-- I'll shut up now!

Re: [MBZ] 240D won't start-- Vacuum??

2007-04-23 Thread Peter Frederick
Eh, lack of vac only means you have to use the stop lever on the IP to
shut it off.

Make sure the stop lever is up.

However, I suspect you have a fuel leak and the IP has gotten full of
air, or you shook a whole lotta crud loose in the tank and the suction
line is clogged now.

To check all of this, locate the hand priming pump on the IP -- it's
beside the lift pump where the fuel lines go. If it's the screw down
to lock type, I'm betting when you unscrew it and pump it you get fuel
squirting out the top of the tube onto your hand. This means the hand
pump is shot, and you've pulled a big slug of air into your fuel filter
and IP. Buy the new "thumb" pump (sealed, no screw down cap) and
replace it, pump a couple million times until you get fuel rolling out
the return line form the filter and can hear the pressure relief valve
hiss. This will take a V E R Y L O N G time, the pump is small and
the filter is large.

If the pump stays down (or the screw down type doesn't in fact leak but
is hard to pull back up), GENTLY blow some compressed air down the
suction line to blow the crud off the tank screen. It will clog again
pretty soon, so you need to plan to replace the screen and get the tank
properly cleaned. It's full of "algae" -- actually filamentous
bacteria that live on the bottom of the tank in the water that collects
there.

Pull-start it. See the owner's manual for the how-to-do. Works great and the
car seems to shake off the cobwebs.

Some of you may have seen those car port structures made of sheetmetal -
usually a single car carport is around $800 or less. Many are sold at gas
stations, convienence stores, etc - anything that can be seen from the
street by those driving by.

I saw one that was a completely enclosed 3 car garage for $6300 delivered
and installed on your site. The buyer is expected to level the site with
sand, gravel, concrete, whatever and it's installed in 1 day. Level is
needed so the roll up doors will operate properly. If a concrete fdn is
not
used they anchor them with mobile home anchors which appear to be very
stable.

Anyone have any experience with these? I'm thinking about one that is
20'x36' with 3 rollup doors, one walk-in and one window. More options can
be added as desired -
