Re: [MBZ] W126 Center Vents not working.......

2007-05-07 Thread Trampas
First I would hit the right side of the center console, on the carpet just
right of the heater and radio. This is where the vacuum unit is, they are
know for having bad solder joints thus hitting there you will often hear a
click and then things start working in which case it will need resoldered.

Additionally things are of course to check that the fuse is good, and you
have good vacumm supply. Either one will cause vents to fail to defrost.

I have had to replace the vacuum actuators and resolder the vacuum switch
module on all my W126 over the years. Note if you remove the dash to replace
vacuum actuators consider replacing the AC expansion valve as that on the
SELs they are pain to replace with dash in place.

You're not going to find cloth unless you find a gray market car.
I don't think there is much difference in MPG between the 2.2 4 cylinder
and the 2.5 5 cylinder, probably because the 2.5 is geared a little

There's probably more difference in mpg between a 2.0 euro and a 2.2 USA

I would think a 2.0 euro 5sp would be as common in the USA as a 2.5 MBUSA 5sp.
The only factory 2.5 5sp I know of is Ron Dwelle's, and it may be a euro, I
can't remember. You should be able to find parts for a 5sp conversion for
$500 to $1000 if you find a good deal on a 190D automatic.

I used to have a '44 2N--stout but crude little beasts. The brakes almost
never work because they're nearly always coated in 90wt oil--stupid design.
Ford fixed that problem when they came out with the 8N in '48(?)

Yes, they live in the house. In fact I have had one while living in an
apartment. It is just important to give them exercise daily - the more
exercise the better-behaved the dog. And this is a breed that will not be
ignored. They demand personal attention - not just the occasional pat on the
head. Letting them live in the yard full-time is not recommended.

They shed a normal amount, but their hair is, of course, short, and it's
hard and heavy, so it lays still while you sweep it up.

Re: [MBZ] Seeking 190D 5spd

2007-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond

Green antifreeze won't eat the headgasket immediately anyway although its not
good for it. Mine is going in at the end of the month to be switched over. I
HATE replacing coolant myself.

Mine is a 2.2l, I think the 2.5 manual will be even harder to find, IIRC 84-85
= 2.2l, '86 2.5, '87 2.5t? Something like that anyway.
All of the 190Ds I've ever driven (3) were 2.2l 5spd.

So is yours a 2.2? I'm learning that the 2.5 is a 5 cylinder? Forgive
my
lack of knowlege. I'm taking it your mileage is coming from a four cyl.

Yes, I am expecting high prices, and am finding that they are hard to
find
cars. But you know, we were just looking at $18k Golfs, and test drove
a
$25k Jetta. And we want this to be our "nice" car, so we are open to
paying
even up to half of the $10k we get from our CRV sale - only for a
really
nice one that needs no repairs.

(Incidently, this will make our 240D more "mine" - there's been some
jealousy over it - my wife feels I consider it mine, and I admit I do.
I
have to bite toungue when she does stuff to it that I think is hard on
it).

Anyway, we are adamant that we want a manny, and we want the 2.2
because it
gets the maximum mileage - even the elusive 40 mpg a times ?? And it
seems
that MB tex is almost always found - we don't want cloth.

So anybody who's willing to part with theirs chime in - we'll pay what
it's
worth.

Also chime in with more tips on the pitfalls and virtues to these
models
(like, is running green antifreeze going to lead to a head gasket
failure? I
ask this for a reason)

Not a Mercedes, and not even diesel, but I picked up an old Ford 9N
tractor
this weekend that needs work.

Needs new wiring, points, coil, wires, and the tranny is stuck in gear.
Also
needs paint, but that is after I get 'er running. I think everything is
fixable with a little work. Anyone out there have one of these that
could
offer advice?

Thanks!

[MBZ] W126 Center Vents not working.......

2007-05-07 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO
Hi Gang,

Yesterday with the vent or A/C button pressed (Position #2 & #3) and temp
wheel turned all the way down, air does blow out the center vents. Now I
know from the ETM, it can either be the ACC unit or this other "unit" (for
lack of a better name) that controls the vacuum to open/close the vents.

One questionon a W126 WHERE is this "unit" located, and what's the
best way to access it for troubleshooting?

Also, any any advice on troubleshooting/repair of this problem would be
greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

My Dobies have been SO inescapably driven to pull that I gave my previous
one what he wanted - I hooked his leash up to the fork of my Sportster and
let him go for it from a dead stop. He did it. In retrospect it was not a
good thing to do to a one year old - still growing and such.

But I'm telling you, I am almost at the point of not getting another male
dobie - extreme drive to pull. I think that this one especially has a super
duper prey drive owing to his pure Shutzhund heritage. I need one with more
defense drive instead.

Re: [MBZ] Seeking 190D 5spd

2007-05-07 Thread Zoltan Finks

So is yours a 2.2? I'm learning that the 2.5 is a 5 cylinder? Forgive my
lack of knowlege. I'm taking it your mileage is coming from a four cyl.

Yes, I am expecting high prices, and am finding that they are hard to find
cars. But you know, we were just looking at $18k Golfs, and test drove a
$25k Jetta. And we want this to be our "nice" car, so we are open to paying
even up to half of the $10k we get from our CRV sale - only for a really
nice one that needs no repairs.

(Incidently, this will make our 240D more "mine" - there's been some
jealousy over it - my wife feels I consider it mine, and I admit I do. I
have to bite toungue when she does stuff to it that I think is hard on it).

Anyway, we are adamant that we want a manny, and we want the 2.2 because it
gets the maximum mileage - even the elusive 40 mpg a times ?? And it seems
that MB tex is almost always found - we don't want cloth.

So anybody who's willing to part with theirs chime in - we'll pay what it's
worth.

Also chime in with more tips on the pitfalls and virtues to these models
(like, is running green antifreeze going to lead to a head gasket failure? I
ask this for a reason)

In retrospect I should have bought the 2 owner '84 I passed on at $4k, it
had less than 200,000 miles...

In the winter my car gets 35-37mpg, top in the summer was 43. I've been

Who has a 190D 2.2 5 spd. they want to sell? We want to buy. That's the
headline, now I'll provide background:

Thoughts have turned this weekend to looking for a vehicle. We have
been
wanting to get something better than the 21 - 25 MPG Honda CRV we have.
We
have been thinking for some time about finding a 190D with manual
tranny. *It
is the 2.2 engine that gets the better mileage, is that right?*

After finding one and talking with the owner on the phone, we are not
very
comfortable. How many of you can relate to trying to communicate with a
seller who, when you say you're calling about the car for sale, they
say
"yeah?", or "ok?". Then you have to proceed to pry any information from
them
and they speak only when prodded to, and then only in one sentence or
shorter answers, and almost in English (oh, and when asked twice what
his
name was, he chose Mike).

This guy claims the car was given to him by a friend. He's had it
"about a
year". He was apparently unaware of the body damage clearly visible in
the
photos he posted. He claims to have records, but when asked, said they
consist of "oil change". I could go on.

BUT, I am now turning, to you in search of intelligent honesty. So who
has a
190D 2.2 5 spd. they want to sell me?

Some dogs, especially smaller breeds, should not wear normal
collars -
their larynx is close to the surface and is easily damaged. Ours wear
halters which spread the load around the shoulders.

The last thing you want on canis equus is a nice harness that
spreads the load out so you can get a lot of pull out of him!
Sled dog?

I can think of more than a few small dogs that could do with
a bit of larynx damage! Just a bit, now. Perhaps not what
you'd get with a collar incident, though.

Re: [MBZ] New Purchase - Ford 9N (OT)

2007-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond

Old tractors are just as much fun as old Mercedes!
I've got a '52 Farmall Super M. The 9n is a handy machine and I think the first
of the n family. SO IIRC yours would have been made from '39ish to '42ish when
it was replaced by the 2n.
The 2n was made until '48ish when it was replaced by the 8n although I might
have the 8n and 9n backwards.
Either way they're handy little machines and dead stupid simple to work on.
Check out www.ytmag.com if you need help, the discussion forums over there are

Thanks Rich - I have a 2GB MP3 player with the cassette adapter just for the
audiobooks - but I need to convince myself of whether the problem is in the
tapes or the player. But since it has happened on more than 1 tape *and*
the cleaning cassette, I'm thinking it is the player -

BTW, a 2GB player seems to hold more than enough stuff. There are 30GB MB3
players but I believe they're overkill - at least for my purposes. I can
get 4 or more books on the MP3 player with room to spare -

Re: [MBZ] M-1 oil question....AGAIN

2007-05-07 Thread LarryT

Hi Walt,
The official list of approved oils has these 2 Mobil 1 oils:
Mobil 1 SuperSyn European Car Formula 0W40 and
Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W40. The MB info says to use these 2 oils, but if
this info is not available, the custmer should use oil marked CF-4 or CG-4
if the oils above are not available.

Having said all that (from the official MB list of recommended Fluids) I
started using the M1 Diesel Truck oil in 5W40 you;re asking about in my 91
300D based on the very high recommendatons of Werner Fehlauer (who may be in
lurk mode)- I have had othing but good stuff from it - but it's only been
1500 miles.

If anyone wants a pdf copy of the MB Fluid Recommendations please send a
offlist request to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Another thought on the audio books on tape -- if your machine is acting
funky it might be time to think about a tech upgrade to an MP3 player of
some sort. You can buy some smaller ones that hold a few hours of stuff
for ridiculously cheap these days, and I understand that audio books are
a very popular download now, either free or quite cheap. Either a FM
transmitter or a cassette adapter would let you use the existing head
unit. There is also a lot of interesting content you can download,
radio shows and things from the archives, that can be quite wonderful.

I know that might not be a solution to your mechanical problem, but it

more fun in the long run.

Sounds like the reverse function is deciding to engage, maybe the tape
is getting hung up and it thinks it has reached the end, reverses,
rewinds a bit then reverses again? If it has that feature of course.
My first cassette deck did not have that -- you had to flip the tape as
it only ran one way. Then I got another one that had auto reverse, and
when the tape got munched it would occasionally act like that.

Maybe clean the transport, use better tapes?

Be prepared to GAG when you see 190D prices. I paid just under $3k for mine and

In retrospect I should have bought the 2 owner '84 I passed on at $4k, it had
less than 200,000 miles...

Brian

Kevin,
As someone else has already intimated, the "rare Mercedes SL" which you saw,
if indeed it was a W107 body style, was a 280SL which were made from '74-'85
and not imported to the U.S. as far as I know (See pg. 140, "Mercedes-Benz

[MBZ] New Purchase - Ford 9N (OT)

2007-05-07 Thread Dave Wakin
Not a Mercedes, and not even diesel, but I picked up an old Ford 9N tractor
this weekend that needs work.

Needs new wiring, points, coil, wires, and the tranny is stuck in gear. Also
needs paint, but that is after I get 'er running. I think everything is
fixable with a little work. Anyone out there have one of these that could
offer advice?

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Seeking 190D 5spd

2007-05-07 Thread Jim Cathey

finding a 190D with manual tranny. *It
is the 2.2 engine that gets the better mileage, is that right?*

Our 2.5 manny (frankenbenz) has turned in 37-42 so far. I don't
think the gearing is right, I didn't swap rear ends and I think
maybe I might need to, eventually. Still got the 2.5 auto's
rear end instead of the 2.2 donor's.

I need to get its bad oil leak fixed, I think it's the big O-ring
seal on the front of the IP. It was sudden, right at the end of
its driving season last fall. I want to get my wife into it since
she racks up the miles, but right now she's still in the Chicken
Wagon.

They are selling the 15w50 which is also on the 229.1 approved list,
in 5 quart jugs for the $23 price... as soon as I get through the

[MBZ] Seeking 190D 5spd

2007-05-07 Thread Zoltan Finks

Who has a 190D 2.2 5 spd. they want to sell? We want to buy. That's the
headline, now I'll provide background:

Thoughts have turned this weekend to looking for a vehicle. We have been
wanting to get something better than the 21 - 25 MPG Honda CRV we have. We
have been thinking for some time about finding a 190D with manual tranny. *It
is the 2.2 engine that gets the better mileage, is that right?*

After finding one and talking with the owner on the phone, we are not very
comfortable. How many of you can relate to trying to communicate with a
seller who, when you say you're calling about the car for sale, they say
"yeah?", or "ok?". Then you have to proceed to pry any information from them
and they speak only when prodded to, and then only in one sentence or
shorter answers, and almost in English (oh, and when asked twice what his
name was, he chose Mike).

This guy claims the car was given to him by a friend. He's had it "about a
year". He was apparently unaware of the body damage clearly visible in the
photos he posted. He claims to have records, but when asked, said they
consist of "oil change". I could go on.

BUT, I am now turning, to you in search of intelligent honesty. So who has a
190D 2.2 5 spd. they want to sell me?

A buddy of mine has a client who makes all kinds of canned solvents and
cleaners and lubes and such. He gave me some cans of some sort of
citrus-y solvent that also seemed to have some kind of alcohol in it.
It wasn't nasty and smelled pretty good, and was death on cleaning some
brakes and wheels and other gunk on Brunnhilde. I'll see if I can dig
up the catalog or web site and see if I might have some of around
somewhere.

Otherwise, white vinegar is reported to be an excellent cleaner, a bit
acidic but benign.

There probably is, but likely a nasty chlorinated hydrocarbon that you

Sounds like the reverse function is deciding to engage, maybe the tape
is getting hung up and it thinks it has reached the end, reverses,
rewinds a bit then reverses again? If it has that feature of course.
My first cassette deck did not have that -- you had to flip the tape as

when the tape got munched it would occasionally act like that.

Maybe clean the transport, use better tapes?

Re: [MBZ] Will a new fender fix this?

2007-05-07 Thread Joe Knight

Having suffered thru a much worse crunching of a 124 front fender last
year I feel at least marginally qualified to hazard a guess. It just
might require a little massage of the underpinnings in the area of the
headlight support but given that neither the headlight or turn signal
look to have shattered there's a fair chance that a new fender will
bolt right up and present no problems so far as headlight and turn
signal attachment are concerned. I expect the bumper will come easily
back into alignment once the new fender is fitted as well. The
suggestion to check the margin between the back of the fender and
front door is particularly to the point; If that looks good and the
front door operates without a hitch you've got another good indication
the damage is about as minor as could be. If the hood opens normally
you should also be able to visually inspect for underlying damage.

[MBZ] SDL oil pan removal

2007-05-07 Thread OK Don

I finally got a chance to get under the car today. The oil pan comes
out with the engine in the car - but lifted as high as it goes.
Everything went per the manual (engine 01-310.pdf) except that the
manual doesn't mention the bottom two tranny to engine bolts that
actually thread into the oil pan. It won't come out until you remove
them! The manual also says that you have to remove the tranny oil
cooler lines from the radiator. I didn't and there was room to spare -
no reason to do it that I can see.
Now I have to find someone to weld up the damage.

Re: [MBZ] A couple easy fixes

2007-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond

Good point.

Of course I figured having any air in the thing at all would pretty much assure
that I never have to use it...

It does have more pressure, but not significantly. You'd be better
setting
the tire at 34 psi and letting some air out if you have to. Having more
to
start will also let you go longer without the tire going flat (like it
was
when you found it today ...).

Howdy,
Some dogs, especially smaller breeds, should not wear normal collars -
their larynx is close to the surface and is easily damaged. Ours wear
halters which spread the load around the shoulders. I believe larger breeds
have a much larger buffer zone making normal collars safe for them.

2007-05-07 Thread BillR
That lunging did happen several times as we were training our lab, but the
pull is pretty much straight down and he had never gone far before it
stopped him. He was never injured and is pretty easy to walk these days,
except when I use his normal chain collar...

Yes, I wonder about the risk to the neck were the dog to lunge then be
caught by its muzzle.

And the pinch collar: 1: to me, it's showing the world that you have a
problem you can't train out (yes, I realize they think the same thing when
they see you being pulled around like a kite) 2: my dog actually overcomes
the sensation of the collar and pulls just as hard

It just means there were no records. Maybe wherever it was registered
does not show up or something.

Zoltan Finks wrote:

So, what does that imply when there are no records found? Normally, there
are at least the registration records, aren't there? Does this suggest the
car might have an illegit title, or something else is fishy?

Or is finding no records sometimes normal?
