[MBZ] Using Beer as gun oil, I recommend stout

2007-08-18 Thread Hendrik
You should move to England the home of Beer porrige, I remember when we
first landed at Waterloo station we had to have a wee drink to get over
all the customs BS.
Anyway we find ourself a cosy little pup just around the corner, the
publican offered a pint of his house speciality. Flat beer, I guess that
was supposed to be a bit of a joke as Australians are known for their
over-carbonated beers. My mate couldn't finish his, so I had to polish
both off.
However things where better in Ireland and their stouts are delicious,
particularly Murphy's in Cork, best stout ever. However once again my
mate was in trouble, like they say, when you think that the world is
falling down around you, have a few stouts and then the world will fall
out of you.

Re: [MBZ] Now: Mobil 1 gun oil

2007-08-18 Thread Hendrik
No we don't, we used too but had a shooting in Pt. Arthur in which a
nutter got a hold of an unsecured assault rifle and shot 30+ people.
Enter the genius Government and worla, a little old gun buyback scheme
later and no more guns. Well, criminals still have guns but that is
different, at least all those dangerous Farmers had to hand in all their
overpowered, auto and most semi auto weapons. Said genius Government
also decided to partly fund this $500 million buy back scheme by cutting
spending in other areas such as mental health. This doesn't make sense
to me but what would I know, I'm an idiot.
Anyway all the honest gun owners sold their firearms to the Government
and the rest buried them out the back somewhere. The criminals just
doubled the price of illegal guns and it seems that is where we are at
today. It is still possible to have a firearm but it is very difficult
and it is still possible to buy illegal just about everything. It seems
that whenever the cops raid the local Biker HQ they find the usual
handguns, sawn offs, semi autos, a big wad of cash and drugs. Just like
they used to before the grand buy back scheme.
Heck, these days it is even illegal to carry a knife without lawful excuse.
However in all fairness to the genius Government, we have not had a
major shooting since, just little ones.
Of course should a foreign nation ever decide to invade Oz we can count
on our good friends the US of A and their arsenal to protect us.

"machines of death".

In the USA, the number of deaths:

44000 due to automobile accidents
29500 due to firearms (including 16,000 _suicides_)

http://stephenrees.wordpress.com/2007/01/03/huge-toll-in-car-fatalities-in-us-goes-unnoticed/

http://library.med.utah.edu/WebPath/TUTORIAL/GUNS/GUNSTAT.html

So are you referring to our cars when you say "machines of death"?

Maybe you should be.

Way to die, and the number of deaths in 2003 due to each - from:
http://www.nsc.org/lrs/statinfo/odds.htm

All External Causes of Mortality 166,857
Motor-Vehicle Accidents,44,757
Intentional self-harm 31,484
Accidental poisoning by and exposure to noxious substances 19,457
Assault 17,732
Falls 17,229
Firearm (non-suicide) 12,267
Accidental asphyxiations (threats to breathing) 8,885
Complications of medical and surgical care 2,855

Maybe where you are the roads are safer. Or the chance of poison
is less. Or gravity doesn't work so hard so a fall is less
likely.

I see three significant conclusions from this data.
 * The roads are much more dangerous than the guns.
 * If I choose to defend myself and my family, we are less likely
to be one of the 17,000.
 * The risk of dieing from assault is less than death by poison
and nearly the same as death from a fall - so why worry about
   assault protection.

Same for torque wrenches, incidentally. Ideally you want to have one
where the torque you are wanting is in the middle range of the wrench.

Ooooh goody, here come 200 posts about what oil is best for your killing

machine, I can hardly wait.
Don't the National Rambo Association have any forums for this kind of
stuff? Do we really have to have 2000+ posts about guns on a Mercedes
forum, when MB don't even make firearms?
I don't mind the odd off topic discussion but as always when the chatter

comes around to guns in goes on and on and on and it is always the same
discussion, just a different way around.
I do not make a habit of jumping on people if posts are off topic but
enough is enough. I know those of you who have a 44 lying next to the

[MBZ] Now: Mobil 1 gun oil

2007-08-18 Thread Hendrik
Ooooh goody, here come 200 posts about what oil is best for your killing
machine, I can hardly wait.
Don't the National Rambo Association have any forums for this kind of
stuff? Do we really have to have 2000+ posts about guns on a Mercedes
forum, when MB don't even make firearms?
I don't mind the odd off topic discussion but as always when the chatter
comes around to guns in goes on and on and on and it is always the same
discussion, just a different way around.
I do not make a habit of jumping on people if posts are off topic but
enough is enough. I know those of you who have a 44 lying next to the
keyboard, in case someone invades your home, don't understand that there
are people in the world who actually hate guns and find talk about these
machines of death offensive. Yeah I spose you do know that and are just
waiting your chance to cull the herd to make it stronger but hate breeds
hate.
I wouldn't mind a discussion of why the US has this culture of violence
but that might not be what people want to get into and this may not be
the place for that.

That's all I've put into my cars. My SD went about 1500 miles between quarts.
It leaked enough that the tail lights/bumper/license plate would be speckled
with oil after highway trips.
Dad's '85 300D went to Reno and back, 3,600 miles and used about 3/4 qt. Not
high consumption in my book.

I do some work on my dirt driveway. Always put the stands, and often the
jack, on a piece of 2x12" lumber. 12" long works fine for a jack stand,
36" for the floor jack so it can roll freely as it raises.

Craig McCluskey wrote:
>
> Rubber jack point?

My W201, and I'm pretty sure my W116, has four rubber pads under the body
that are intended for lifting the entire car on a shop hoist. With the 201,
it's mandatory to use these because many of the other possible jack points
have plastic fairings or belly pans under them. (my 201 is a 16v, others
may vary, I don't think all 201s have fairings on the control arms) When I
want to raise the 201 fully, I put the back end on ramps and raise the
front with the factory jack, putting the stands under the round rubber
pads located inboard of the rocker panel jack tubes. I've only jacked
up my 300SD to remove wheels, it's tall enough to let me do stuff like
tranny fluid changes without raising the car. A previous owner put
P215/75R14 tires on it, so it's taller than the average W116. Also gets
27mpg at 80mph, possibly aided by the larger rolling diameter of the tires.

removed head and manifolds together, then took off the manifolds and sent
the head to the machine shop for cleaning and warp check. Also spent some
time removing all signs of the gasket from the block. Raising the head
1/2" and slipping the new gasket in seems a bit substandard to me.

Re: [MBZ] Jacking vehicle up to change ATF filter

2007-08-18 Thread Hendrik
That's my point, you can buy heavy duty (relative to a car) stands for
not much money.
Still you have to be careful where you use them, on concrete/asphalt no
problem but on soft ground extra care needs to be taken.
It is a good idea once the car is up to try and move it with your hand
to determine how stable it is, you do not want to find out the hard way.

I bought 10 lbs from a seller on eBay. Someone else on the list bought
some from a baking goods supply house. If you do a search on the Internet,
you most likely will find someone who sells it (which is the option here
in out-of-the-way Los Alamos).

Sounds like the cruise control actuator going CRAZY. I expect that is
possible if the feedback loop becomes intermittent or opens. Try

Re: [MBZ] OT Honda Timing Belt

2007-08-18 Thread E M
Most say mileage, as the average driver will cover the mileage in about 5-6
years. Like any rubber bit, time effects them too. If I had a car with
very lows miles and use, I'd change things based on time, as I do with my
old porsche. If it's a valve bender engine, I'd kind of think around the
5-6 year mark or mileage, whatever comes frist. many ownder's manuals will
give a both a time and mileage change date. Alwayus best to check the book.

[MBZ] citric acid

I just looked through the archives-seems as if the consensus is about 1
pound of citric acid per gallon of H2O. Where does one buy citric acid? I
tried the local pharmacy today and they didn't carry it. IIRC, my mother
used to use it when canning peaches.

Anyway time to flush the Green Goddess and get the green stuff out of there

So it has nothing like a timing chain gallery that would interfere with
sliding the old one out?

I had this same discussion with someone last week. All gas stations and quick

certain there would be no more robbery or theft.

Expecting a gun free zone (helpless victim zone) to deter somebody intent
on murder is like expecting an order of protection to prevent murder.

If belt breakage can destroy the engine, I wouldn't want to bet $2000 on a
piece of rubber that's more than five years old. That's just my opinion, seems
like most factory recommendations are mileage based.

Re: [MBZ] OT Honda Timing Belt

2007-08-18 Thread Levi Smith
I'm thinking it depends on what sort of auto experience you have. If you're
used to dealing with Japanese cars, you should be used to dealing with
timing belts. I've been well versed with them for about 12 years. You
generally replace timing belts in the 60-100K mile range depending on the
vehicle. If not, you can usually find good deals on cars with blown engines
from people who didn't bother to replace them. I've done two in my wife's
Subaru and I'm nearing time for the 4th in my Subee.

I just changed the belt on a "non bender" engine. :-) It broke before the
recommend time change, and I suspect when it was last changed, they put a
nic in the belt when putting it on or something. Tow home, ($60) and new
best $28. Line everything up and a few skinned knuckles later, I was back
in business. hee hee. Gotta love low compression American engines at times.

I will recommend that we get that belt replaced soon.

This is really interesting to me though, as I wasn't aware, and I
don't think the general public is aware, that these cars are something
close to a time bomb in that they are very likely to just go belly up
at a certain point. All I knew was that these Hondas were very
reliable and would last a long time. But according to this info., they
are reliable, with a very severe caveat.

You would think that it would be better known that these cars will
just quit at around 100k or whatever the designated mileage is.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle electrics

2007-08-18 Thread LWB250
As a former (20+ years) standby/prime power generator
and control guy, I left this as basic as I could. One
of the things that often made us crazy was when specs
for windings were published since the questionable
accuracy of most end user's test equipment made it
impossible for them to measure such a low value. As a
result, you tell them the windings should have 0.2
ohms resistance and they hook up their Radio Shack VOM
to it, there is no way they will ever see that value.
After all, who carries a Wheatstone bridge around with
them?

Then it's the "It must be bad!" assumption, which is
almost always wrong. They buy a new part, put it in,
and it still doesn't work. Now you're the bad guy.

Few people understand that meter accuracy is a
percentage of the range, so when you're way down
at the bottom of the range you're probably so far out
of the percentage of accuracy it's not funny.

For the most part, simple continuity tests on these
sorts of windings will tell you whether or not they're
good or bad. Want some real fun?

Get out the megger! Whoopee!

Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle electrics

2007-08-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
The stator has three wires. You should be able to measure a very, very
small resistance between the three if your VM is sensitive enough and
none should have any electrical connection to the stator body.

Stator failures consist of an open winding, a shorted winding, (more
common) a short to ground (the stator body) or an open lead. Of the
four, only the third & fourth can be detected with a ohm-meter because
the winding resistance is too low.

The rotor has two wires, same as above.

Rotor failures consist of an open winding and a short to ground (the
stator body) and both can be detected with a ohm-meter.

All measurements are taken with the wires disconnected

I'm doing this from the seat of my pants since I'm not
familiar with that system, but more likely than not
the three yellow wires should have continuity to each
other, but nothing to ground.

You're probably correct on the black/green
arrangement. If they are in fact the field winding,
they should have continuity between each other but
nothing to ground or the stator leads, either.

Of course you must test all of these with all the
wires disconnected, or you risk getting incorrect
results.

Re: [MBZ] Was Virtual Pillory: Come jeer at the idiot!, now handguns & the law

2007-08-18 Thread Harry Watkins
In Jackson, MS, a 78 year old man fought and killed an intruder in his
house. A TV reporter asked him how it felt to fight someone 1/3 of his
age. He said "he wasn't any younger than them bullits". After all, its
them fast little things that come out the front of the gun that hurts the
most.

Re: [MBZ] rodent hunting, was handguns & the law

2007-08-18 Thread Curt Raymond

Woodchucks, procupines and such like to get up under the camp and dig into the
stringers. We usually defer to the .410 or 20ga for them.
Roust 'em from the camp and its all over quick. I can get 'em with a .22 but
you're right it doesn't take much of a miss for them to linger.
I'm always paranoid if I don't do the job clean they'll crawl under the camp to
die and the stink will kill us...

Brain shots only. Just about any reasonably powerful air rifle can do
 in a
woodchuck, coons are a bit tougher. I only shot one woodchuck with an
air rifle. Dog had him cornered. First shot, broadside into the center
of the head (cheekbone) was largely ineffective, but he quit chattering
at the dog, and turned the other cheek so to speak. 2nd shot, same
 point
of aim on the other side of his head, same result. Then I got to
 thinking
about where his tiny brain might be, aimed just behind the eye, and he
dropped like I'd flicked his power switch to 'off'. Mammals' brains are
located high and to the rear of their heads, best bet is to hit them
somewhere between the eye and ear.

Any air rifle that shoots over 750fps in .177 or 600fps in .22 is
 plenty
for rodents, at any range you can reliably hit a ping pong ball.
 (that's
roughly the size of a rabbit or woodchuck's brain) As long as you have
enough power to penetrate the skull, accuracy matters a lot more than
power, either you hit the brain or you wound an animal.

I have not been happy with my results taking chest shots with a .22LR
firearm on woodchucks over the years, now I either shoot them in the
head or use a .223. With the .223, any torso hit is instantly lethal.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle electrics

2007-08-18 Thread LWB250
I'm doing this from the seat of my pants since I'm not
familiar with that system, but more likely than not
the three yellow wires should have continuity to each
other, but nothing to ground.

You're probably correct on the black/green
arrangement. If they are in fact the field winding,
they should have continuity between each other but
nothing to ground or the stator leads, either.

Of course you must test all of these with all the
wires disconnected, or you risk getting incorrect
results.

This reminds me of the discussions I had about the recent college
shootings. One of the arguments I heard was that it was a gun free zone
& the student had no bisuness with the handguns on campus. Yah, right -
you are going to shoot a group of people & you will be concened about
something as trivial as a gun ordenance?

Statistics show police hit innocent people 11% of the time they fire their
handgun. Law-Abiding citizens "authourized to possess a gun" (how I hate

record for the cops.

A little piece of trivia - these were actually manufactured by AMC for
The Chrysler Corporation.

Except for the Van & Truck lines, Chrysler no longer had the ability to
manufacture rear wheel drive cars because K cars and their varients were
being produced in their car facilities. AMC was "on the ropes" & had the
capacity & the car New Yorker was produced under contract until AMC was
purchased by Chrysler.

Re: [MBZ] Handguns and the law

2007-08-18 Thread Curt Raymond

Recoil is related to how heavy the gun is.
I've shot a 10ga once or twice with no ill effects. That was on the trap range
though and trap loads are ususally low power and lower recoil.
Trap guns also tend to be heavy and thus have less recoil.

I tried firing both barrels on a 12ga side by side once, damn near put me on my
butt.

Re: [MBZ] Dodge 600

2007-08-18 Thread Tom Hargrave
They use one of several head hasket sealers. The sealer goes into the
cooling system & seals the breech in the head gasket. Here is one of
several that actually work:

http://www.rxauto.com/thermagasket-repair-kits.htm

The key is that the leak has to be static, not growing. And if it is
then there is a very good chance that the product will work. If the leak
is growing then the patch will just blow back out.

And very important to some list members - and no handgun is needed to
install or use the product.

Brain shots only. Just about any reasonably powerful air rifle can do in a
woodchuck, coons are a bit tougher. I only shot one woodchuck with an
air rifle. Dog had him cornered. First shot, broadside into the center
of the head (cheekbone) was largely ineffective, but he quit chattering
at the dog, and turned the other cheek so to speak. 2nd shot, same point
of aim on the other side of his head, same result. Then I got to thinking
about where his tiny brain might be, aimed just behind the eye, and he
dropped like I'd flicked his power switch to 'off'. Mammals' brains are
located high and to the rear of their heads, best bet is to hit them
somewhere between the eye and ear.

Any air rifle that shoots over 750fps in .177 or 600fps in .22 is plenty
for rodents, at any range you can reliably hit a ping pong ball. (that's
roughly the size of a rabbit or woodchuck's brain) As long as you have
enough power to penetrate the skull, accuracy matters a lot more than
power, either you hit the brain or you wound an animal.

I have not been happy with my results taking chest shots with a .22LR
firearm on woodchucks over the years, now I either shoot them in the
head or use a .223. With the .223, any torso hit is instantly lethal.

Mitch.

CB caps aren't much different than a pellet gun noise wise. Remember the big
noise with a gun is the bullet exceeding the sound barrier.

I've shot alot of squirrels with CB caps at my parents house, just a quiet pop
is all you hear. Works real good within about 50 feet.

cops are not really that intelligent with guns, it seems. this story if
pretty near unbelievable given the number of alternative options available.
why not just beat the snake to death with your truncheon?

cops scare me. they often seem stupid and violent. and at the end of the
day, we learn, they won't come into the building to get the shooter because
they are afraid. they don't seem to serve very much purpose.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle electrics

2007-08-18 Thread Curt Raymond

There are 5 wires out of the stator, the diagnostic says to test the 3 yellow
ones into the regulator as diodes I presume those are the 3 AC outputs.
The black wire I presume is ground and the other one (can't remember the color,
green maybe) I'd guess is the field.
Any idea what I should see across each?

If the regulator tested out OK, don't replace it.
Sounds like you may just need some new brushes and
that's it. If there are springs involved with the
brushes and you can replace them, do that, too.

You can test the stator for continuity and grounds,
too - might want to do that while you're at it. You
may have a bad stator winding.

Mobil makes a "Turbo and Truck Diesel Oil" in 5W40. I started using this
in my 240D and 300D and am pleased with it.
It's designed for diesel and will hold soot in suspension better than the
15W50.
It is found at Walmart and AutoZone or AdvanceAuto

Perhaps the greatest source of incorrect information about guns is TV and
movies - 99% of what they show about guns is wrong to some degree. before
she took the CCW course, my wife used to wonder, "why dont they shoot the
bad guy in the leg?" once whe tried to hit the 3'x3' paper target from 25'
with a handgun, she understood. It's never as easy as it looks on TV.
Just *hitting* the bad guy takes some talent. Shooting for an arm or leg is
laughable. Now she knows. But millions are just as ill informed.

I just loved those cars (especially the new yorker) that had the
electronic dash, and the electronic voice thing. In fact, I had one of
those maybe 7 years ago or so. Bought it with a bad turbo and ordered a
new one from rusty. Think I might find another one just for the hell of
it sometime.

As one CCW holder to another! I wish the anti-gunners would see the logic

their argument consists of talking about Penis' for the most part. I guess
when you cannot debate a subject with logic you resort to name calling.

Re: [MBZ] handguns & the law WOT - This ost is about guns - delete it if you don't want to read it.

2007-08-18 Thread LarryT
Hi Tom,
You said<>

I blame it on the education system which is overwhelmingly liberal democrats
who have created a huge anti-gun/anti-self protection agenda that wants
everyone to depend on the govt for everything - even personal safety.
Instead of teaching math and how to make aliving someday the students are
told to become activists and assigned to write congress and ask that all
guns be taken away.

The gun debate has been taken into the 1st grade and 6 year olds are being
told a gun is a monster - not the criminal behind it.

Funny, my daughter in law felt that guns should be not allowed in her home -
and made my son bring his Glock to store at my house (I know, -sigh- he
wimped out). But when her next door neighbor was raped and robbed & her
children threatened and traumatized by what happened to their mother one
evening she changed her mind. The next day my son was back for his Glock.

But I hate to think that people need to be hurt to understand you cannot
depend on others for your personal safety.

Your experiment proves how incredibly absurd some people feel about guns.
Remember when we used to play with cap guns? They're almost impossible to
find. So many parents are afraid for their kids to even *see* a gun or hear
the word! They have been made to fear an inanimate object rather than the
criminal holding the weapon which somehow deserves understanding.

Schools no longer teach the history of American Revolution when *guns* were
used to rectify a terrible situation. It was more than taxation w/o
representation - it was horrendous oppression. The media also never
mention that guns are used between 300k and 2mm times a year to stop or
prevent crimes - often the mere sight of a firearm makes criminals go
elsewhere. I wonder how many non-gun owners would consider putting a large
sign on their lawn saying,
"No Guns in this Home - we dial 911!" rather that taking advantage of the
gun owners by using the possibility their home is armed.

My first car was an '88 Dodge 600SE 2.2L turbo. As a car it was indeed
pretty crappy, but as transportation, it was comfortable, reasonably
sprightly, and drop dead reliable. A surprisingly unrusted midwestern
car, it met it's end on October 11, 1996 at the hands of an errant Chevy
Blazer in rural Mississippi.

Having grown up with K-Cars and their minivan variants, I think they're
great pieces of Reagan-era Americana, underappreciated and now sadly
forgotten.

I know you might not want to kill it, but have you see the commercials
for
the air rifle made by Gamo? They show it dropping raccons, possums ,
squirrels and other similar sized varmits. Just a quiet phhhttt
