One click counter clockwise from OFF position is right parking, two clicks
CCW is left.

DUH! I was looking for the fuse until I realised those directional parking
lamps only work when the ignition is OFF.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cheap Hosting

Web service costs maybe $10/month. Email is a bit more - but not much
more. Google Apps will get to where we want them eventually, but for
an office used to the integration of Microsoft products, it's not
there yet.

I can say much the same. I've found it's very true the old adage. It isn't
what you know, but who you know. LinkedIn is supposed to capitalize on that.
Like I said, I haven't needed to use it for that yet, and Allan mentioned
he's never received an request for an introduction, so I can't give you any
idea of how successful the system is just yet.

However, if you have a portfolio of art the best thing to do is go online
with it. At least that is my opinion on the subject.

[MBZ] and now for a little MB chat. :-)

2008-02-15 Thread E M
I stopped in at the dealer the other day, while I was up getting new
stickers for the plates. The had a lot of C Classes on the floor, most
with some kind of AMG dress on. I think the AMG rims are a not cost option
here, but not positive. Had a couple of SLs too which I guess they're
trying to move before the face lifted model comes in soon. They seem to be
going with the square light theme on the SL, which is also on the current S
and C Class models. They had a CL 550, again, sporting an AMG kit and rims,
but standard running gear. It's a really great looking car, and much better
in the flesh than in pictures. It's a really nice package, and from the few
reports I've read, the engine, which is mated to a 7 speed gearbox gives
surprisingly good mileage for what it is. Couple of E classes too, which
are also due for a freshening. I've seen a few spy pics, but too much
factory cladding on them to really see the finished product. Oh, back to
the SL for a sec. Don't quote me on my facts, but I think the SLR coupe has
now ceased production to make room for full time production of the droptop
SLR. It too will end production in a year or two. Mercedes is currently
working on "Black" version of the face lifted SL, which will get the SLRs
engine, not a turbo V12.

So, there's my monthly MB report from the local dealer. :-) Oh, unlike the
other dealer I usually use, which has a stand along showroom for the Smart
cars, this dealer had Smart cars right alongside the MBs on the floor.

Not much different.

Back door power window regulator frame is prone to bending and
making the window non functional.

Otherwise its just W123 things like water on the floor from the
front and rear glass, door check straps that explode, plugged
sunroof and hood drains, door lock vacuum actuators leaking,
odometer gear slipping on it's shaft, dash light rheostat
getting flaky, dash lights getting weak, 4-way flasher sticking,

Re: [MBZ] 500K

I have heard that the supercharger engagement was quite dramatic --
it was electrically switched just like the kickdown switch. 98 to
137 hp at the click of a switch had to be fun.

My mechanic friend's stepfather aquired Rommel's staff car in the
late 40's as a junker, but it ran long enough for the two of them to
take it for a short run on the autobahn, sitting on milk crates. He
said he fell over backwards when the supercharger cut in, but the
engine tossed a main bearing so they never drove it again.

Big beast of a car, though.

1935. The flex discs are a little strange. They're really big and
pretty soft and compliant. They seem way too fragile to hold up, but I
guess they do.

It is nominally a 5L. Most are 5017cc, but this an early one with a
scant 4986cc. 98hp normally and 137 with the banshee engaged.

I think they still do, if not mistaken. I believe most of the revolvers are
now in stainless? From what I've read, S&W have now lost most of the police
market, and their revolvers may soon become offered in a similar fashion as
Colt old SA, as a custom item.

If you like the N, you should see the X.

I should also state that most of my knowledge of guns is due to an interest
in them, and reading. Being Canadian, handguns are very restricted here,
that's why most of us drive gassers, so we can get away from the bad guys
faster. hee hee.

most anything you could need, but where i get in trouble is if i'm used to
running a program and it's not on the list, i have to go search for a linux
version in .deb.

it's just silly to pay for any software in this day and age. i remember
paying $2k for an at clone. i remember paying $200 for nearly obsolete
486.

today, you just spend $200 for a recent refurb at microcenter and load it
with linux and get all the free software for free. now you are happily set
for the next few years.

if that's too much investment, get something for free and have wonko figure
out what to do to make it useful.

Yeah, I used a VW pan with the body mounted backwards so I could have a
front engine, and Maaco was having a twofer.

The lift was there when I arrived, so I haven't researched it much, but
it is nice to be able to open the doors with the car in position. It
places the car further back on the lift which I guess is good for even
weight distribution, but I can see how a Tatra could get a little tipsy.
And that, alas, is about all I know.

Some kind of generic stinky light oil petroleum solvent. Bought

infinitely better than the water-based degreaser that HF sells

I think S&W make a 7 shot revolver in 357 mag? Think it was based on the N

ubuntu as been going ok for me. basically, if it's not part of the built in

just made the mags more expensive.

i think high capacity is cool and fun, but in the end, if you can't end a
situation in 5 or 6 shots, you really aren't prepared to be there.

on of my favorite range stories involves my down the pants model 19. a
salty old commando was shooting there and we got to talking about guns. i
was showing him the 19 and demonstrated firing it at 25 yards. all he said
was "is that as fast as it can shoot?" i told him that in more skilled
hands it could surely be shot faster, but it really isn't exactly built for
speed. at which point he looked puzzled and asked "so what the hell use is
that to me then?"

i guess soldiers in urban combat need speed and high capacity, but i think
most of us are ok with a nice .38.

Does anyone have an old railroad watch? I have my fathers; an Elgin. I
remember him having to take it in to a "certified" watchmaker periodically
to get its accuracy checked. It was running in 1939 when he retired from
the railroad but it doesn't run now. Watchmaker said it would have to be
disassembled so the dried oil could be cleaned out of the jewel bearings and
that it would then be good as new. He wanted a big price to do it, so I
declined. Watchmaker said such watchs were common and not worth a great
deal as antiques. The case was gold plated and the movement was 21 jewel
IIRC.

Good god why? I've never handled a Marlin autoloader that didn't feel like the
action was full of sand.
The Ruger wasn't that much smoother but was a million times more reliable.
With all the hop up parts made now you can make a 10/22 into a serious
performance target gun

Remember when everybody (except cops, who need to be able to kill dozens

Yeah, same here, except I have one front drive car, one japanese truck,
and ... a bunch of SUVs. Have all three of the big three represented, two of
the not so big three, as well as mercedes, vw, and toyota.

Truth be told, I can find something to complain about with each of them.
Nothing is perfect, and once you're used to something's quirks and know where
to find parts for it, you can generally keep it going okay, except perhaps
some lucas wired or italian vehicles. Some days, everything drives me nuts
and I want to get rid of them all and have a horse and a bicycle.

I'm not really a fan of asian cars myself, but cut the toyota slack because
I have a soft spot for old landcruisers. This one even has a factory diesel
with five speed. The vw is front drive, which I don't prefer either, but
it's still fun in its own right.

Re: [MBZ] Climate control 1980 300D

2008-02-15 Thread Peter Frederick
The 3.5L version of the 603 engine was subject to aquiring bent rods
in normal service. There are several theories as to why this
happened, but the result was that either the engine had to be
completely rebuild with new rods, pistons, liners, and bearings, or a
new long block purchased -- about $7000 either way. Not nice, and
once the rods bent the first sign was usually a huge cloud of blue
smoke

The W124 chassis is quite nice -- and very safe (I got hit in the
driver's door by a 3/4 ton van doing 60 and got away almost unhurt)
and the W126 cars are very very nice. The W140 chassis is also quite
nice, but suffers from expensive electronics problems, to the point
no one wants them. The W210 chassis diesel is nice, too, but I don't
know much about those.

[MBZ] Climate control 1980 300D

2008-02-15 Thread jgiels
I want you all to know that I have been struggling with the climate on my 300D
for some time now. Have received alot of support from several people here and
think that I have narrowed the last bit down.

It seems that the in car sensor the is by the right front speaker is
Intermintant! To open on to infinity at times I have changed it out with
another and though I think it stuck once (just this morning) it has worked
perfectly for a whole week!

My thanks to all that contribute to this wonderful list!

Douglas..

Ps what is the best late model diesel MBZ has.. am looking in the future..
maybe 5 - 10 years to replace.. my 123. I am confused with all the rodbender
themes.

I still have one kicking around. Cheaper to own and run than taking the

think of the mileage and road salt the car has been exposed to.

More like dead fish forever, which is the objection to oil slicks --
prevents oxygen getting into the water, very bad. Very stinky, anyway.

DDT certainly did thin eggshells -- remember, the affected birds all
ate fish, and DDT collects in the fat of the fish. They were eating
several hunderd milligrams a day, or more, much higher that the
recent psuedoscience stuff would inidicate.

Funny, the thining eggshell problem went away when DDT use stopped

Re: [MBZ] W124 vent light?

2008-02-15 Thread Peter Frederick
You need to check the marker lamps and the license plate lamps,
especially for one that is dimmer than the rest. The module works by
measuring current draw to the pairs of lamps -- if they don't pull
the same amps, the warming light comes on. You may have to replace
all the bulbs with matched ones, I had that problem in the Volvo.
different manufacturer's bulbs don't pull the same amps/

however, it can still be a bad module.

All the parts will swap just fine with the exception of rear doors/door
panels.

Re: [MBZ] Did I mention

2008-02-15 Thread David Bruckmann
That's because it isn't a Japanese car. It's made in Mexico and is a rebadged
Renault (their "B" platform, used by the Clio and Modus). Ditto for the Sentra,
which uses the Megane or "C" platform.

There has been some discussion that Chrysler may rebadge some Renault B- and C-
cars to fill the gaping hole in their product line, ie the absence of any
small, fuel-efficient vehicles.

The whole car is awesome!
It looks like they used the same rubber flex disk at the ends of the
drive shafts. What year is the car (1937?) ?

I had a couple of "can't resolve the name mercedes@okiebenz.com"

they went away

Have you seen the T-shirt with the picture of four North American

Looks like a rip-off of the Kel-Tec P-3AT---a great little pistol,
although I prefer the .32 caliber version which has slightly less
ferocious recoil.

I won't buy anything Ruger makes, since they basically rolled over and
played dead for the Clinton administration during the Assault Weapons
ban (remember that?).
