2008-03-29 Thread LarryT

It amazes me how quickly things become obsolete - even now that PCs have
become as common as
TV sets - you mention the LP sized floppies which are long gone - after
them the 5-1/4 came and went in favor
or the 3.5. Now, the 3.5s are disappearing from new puters - only CD/DVD
drives are available.
I guess in the near future only flash drives wll come with new puters.

I bought a coupld 4gb flash drives for $22 each - awesome little creations.
I am almost overwhelmed when I
consider what these 4Gbs represent - back in 87 I worked for a major
chemical/fibers co in the cost department.

there wasn't a pc in site - then the 8088s began to dribble in and the HDs
measured in MBs. we often had to remove one program to run another.

Now the TBs are available for $200? I;m sure the price will be close to
$100 within a year.

BTW, what comes after TB? a 1000 TBs is what?

I like Frys, I'm pretty sure there only on the west coast...

The storage system I teach uses 500GB drives to reach 192TB of total storage.
Yes 384 drives... Hearing protection is a must in those situations. In my
classroom I've only got 24TB and I've only got 250GB drives so 96 drives...

I know from reading the mails that a lot of you are interested in
electronics, and always looking for a source and a good price. Many
  of you may know
of Fry's Electronics _www.outpost.com_ (http://www.outpost.com) but
 since they
only have stores in the largest cities, many may not. Frys runs
 several ads
a week and the one on Friday is 8 pages big, viewable on line.

Noted tonight is a 1TB internal hard drive for $199.95 by Maxtor.
 order #
5524820. Or a 500 GB external drive for 114.99, by Western Digital.
  order #
5530040.

The one Terabyte hard drive caught my eye because I used to be Chief
Engineer of a computer facility for a major insurance company. I
 remember taking
tours through our facility and speeling about our 2.3 Terabyte
 network, a
16,000 square foot room with spinning hard drives (multiple discs the
 size of a
dinner plate), and main frames, consuming 600 KW of conditioned,
uninteruptible power! Another 400 KW was consumed to provide
 cooling for said room!
Hardware value--about 60 million dollars!!

The staff to program and coordinate these resources approached 200.
  Now you
can lay down $200 and plug this drive into your home PC! Incredible!

Re: [MBZ] Welder's dream

2008-03-29 Thread Tom Hargrave
I thought so. The engine is a derivative of the one in my 1959 220S. They
are great engines.

MB only went to the DOHC 280 because of America's more stringent emissions
plans to move to lower grade fuels. The later 280 is a HEMI engine, allowing
the higher compression engine to run on regular or mid-grade fuel.

2008-03-29 Thread jfreezn

Mitch,

You are thinking of JER, John Robbins, @MS State.? He also had a 116 diesel.

The hard drives with the big platters were of various makes, but we had them
into the 90's.? We also had reel to reel tape drives past Y2K, as we had to
maintain equipment that could communicate with archaic state computers.?
Arkansas comes to mind (sorry Clintons, et all).

[MBZ] Singletons.....and a picture

2008-03-29 Thread ANGELO GIAIMO

Yah, the decor at Singleton's is kinda casual and has a local ambiance to
it. Ever been there at low tide in the summer? Refreshing!

Bill, where do you live down there? My wife and I just inhereted a house
in Oak Harbor (Off Mayport Road) after my father in law died 2/21 in Fleet
Landing, which was our most recent trip to JAX. . (Burrial in NJ is
tomorrow). We'll be down to clean/renovate/rent it out soon..

I'll let you know when we're back in town.

As for Safe Harbor Seafood, It's on par, price-wise with Singleton's but
Looks better; Smells better and a good place to buy fresh seafood, too.
BTW, Most places down in Mayport sell Wild caught Mayport Shrimp, as
well as the Farm Raised crap; Don't just assume because the shrimp boats
are parked outside the fish is local.

Gene's Seafood is about halfway between Atlantic and Beach on Penman Road.
They've got weeknight specials. 18, (I think) shrimp plus 2 sides and
hushpuppies. for something like $8.99 and others.

O'Steens is a no-reservations, cash-only place, and depending on the night,
be prepared to wait, sometimes up to 2 hours. It's in St. Augustine about
1/2 mile east of the Bridge of Lyons Bridge. Worth the drive down A1A from
the beaches. We usially drive down, have cocktails in the parking lot
while waiting for our names to be called.

And 40 degrees and rain in NY makes me appreciate my trips to northeast
florida even more.

Which place closed due to road construction in the area? Did not see

Normal starter draw is around 900A cold, less hot as the engine spins

You were no doubt standing on the concrete portion of what used to be a pier
when you took the picture - just where we were standing to look around when
we were there. I am pretty sure O'Steens is no more, which is too bad as I
had high hopes for the place. I'll drive by next time I am in St. A. We
live in Beauclerc. Beauclerc Rd is our address, though that is from the
earlier part of the house that faces it - now a MIL apartment. Our part of
the house faces Beauclerc Wood Lane South. It is pretty much three miles
due East of NAS Jax. We are about 1/8 mile from the junction of the St.
John's River and Goodby's Creek. It is pretty much of a hike out to
Singleton's from here. Have you been to Clarks Fish Camp? Most
interesting. There is also a great Asian spot and crab house near here.
Let me know when you will be down and we can get together. Magellans on Jax
beach is also a great spot - great food and marginal [but beach front]
atmosphere.

Re: [MBZ] Starter system

I had a very similar problem with my 126 when I first purchased it, I
was all set to replace the starter. I was able to start the car when
hot by rapping the solenoid, so I'm sure there were issues there,
however changing the battery resolved (overcame) the issue, at least,
a fully charged fresh battery is able to overcome the weakness/wear of
the starter. Lots easier to replace as well!

Whenever a car manufacturer shows a commercial like this one they always
have a disclaimer in little letters acroiss the bottom saying something
like, Professional Driver on Closed Road - Do not drive like this or
somethin like that.

Does they really think people will buy a car drive it off a cliff or out of
an airplane (as has happend in some commercials) then when they get hurt or
killed, are they going to sue MB and say - They showed it on TV! It must
be ok for Billy Bob to drive 90mph thru midtown Manhattan during rushhour!
It's MBs fault Billie Bob got maimed like that! [TV shows BB in wheelchair

Or are they taking preventative lawyering to an extreme?

Re: [MBZ] Car For Mitch Haley (190dt)

2008-03-29 Thread Mitch Haley
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=290218117617

Just finished a lookover.
Seller traded the car for some work he did on the PO's boat,
and the tranny died two weeks later. He claims they got 35mpg
from the one tank of fuel they ran through it. He also said it
rides/drives great, at least until it stopped going forward.

Tranny engages reverse quickly enough, but nothing forward. PO said
that it was rebuilt a year or two ago, and the guys at the tranny
shop commented they'd never seen anything like the insides of that
tranny before. (in other words, they had no business getting inside
a mbz box and charging money for it) Might be as simple as tightening
the B2 adjustment, but I'd feel more comfortable putting a non-buggered
ttanny in it.

Car starts quickly, but runs very rough and smokes (looks more like
diesel than water) for the better part of a minute, then settles
down and runs smooth. So will need some fuel system work, maybe
leaking injector or delivery valves. Black ugly stuff in the coolant,
but seller says the PO put stop leak in it for a heater core issue.
Is replacing the heater core as bad as doing HVAC work in a W124?
A/C supposedly works. I didn't think to check for 134a conversion.

Interior appears to be Tex, looks good, but some muddy dog prints in the
back. No tears, but driver's seat spring busted.
Fog lights better than average. Bullseye hole in the center of driver's
headlamp. Multiple long cracks in windshield. Monowiper is good, works
faster than most and quietly.

Some rust through on passenger front door. The one door that isn't good
on my 190Dt. Other doors are pretty nice. Rocker rust around back jack
hole on passenger side, and some on the back wheel arches. Fenders/hood
good, underhood insulation bad. I forgot to check the panels under
the engine compartment.

Sunroof is the popup type. Opens/closes well, neither of us knew how
to activate the popup feature. Probably safer that way anyhow.
Modern stereo with CD in it. Antenna said to go up/down, but not receive.
The key he had in his pocket was a copy, don't know about the other one.
He has the original console/climate control pushbutton panel/stereo
in the garage. Pushbutton panel doesn't work, so entire used console
was installed to fix it. Cruise control doesn't work.

All in all, I'd say it was a $1000 car before the tranny died.
I would have offered $400, but it's already at $445.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Complete loss of vacuum, OM617

2008-03-29 Thread Allan Streib
This was supposed to have the following text:

This morning I worked on my vacuum problem, and got it partially
resolved.

The main problem seemed to be that I had used vacuum line that was
just a bit too large in diameter. It was not snug enough on the
plastic lines to seal properly. I found some slightly smaller tubing
in one of my garage cabinets and used that, and now my engine
shut-off, brake assist, and ACC are working again.

My locks are still not working, there is a leak somewhere in that
subsystem but that has been the case for a couple of months now and
will be next on my list. Currently I have that disconnected with a
golf tee in the line.

By the way I noticed that there are TWO vacuum nipples on the main
line to the booster, on what I assume is the check valve (see attached
pic). The one with the white ring at the base (closest to the brake
booster) has 0.5 stamped on the base, while the other one has 0.6
marked. On the check valve body itself are the numbers 18.09

Does it make a difference which devices are connected to which of
these nipples?

This morning I worked on my vacuum problem, and got
 it partially
 resolved.

The main problem seemed to be that I had used vacuum
 line that was
just a bit too large in diameter. It was not snug
 enough on the
plastic lines to seal properly. I found some
 slightly smaller tubing
in one of my garage cabinets and used that, and now
 my engine
shut-off, brake assist, and ACC are working again.

My locks are still not working, there is a leak
 somewhere in that
subsystem but that has been the case for a couple of
 months now and
will be next on my list. Currently I have that
 disconnected with a
 golf tee in the line.

By the way I noticed that there are TWO vacuum
 nipples on the main
line to the booster, on what I assume is the check
 valve (see attached
pic). The one with the white ring at the base
 (closest to the brake
booster) has 0.5 stamped on the base, while the
 other one has 0.6
marked. On the check valve body itself are the
 numbers 18.09

Does it make a difference which devices are
 connected to which of
 these nipples?

Probably the orifice size in the fitting, and yes, it does matter. However, I
don't know which is which, all ours are either too old or too new -- the 72
only has two lines (ACC, no door locks) and the W124 has a separate system for
the ACC and tranny, only the shut-off is connected to the main line.

Never changed one in a 124. My 201 needs to have the dash completely removed to
get to it. That is why it is not done yet. I am a procratinator AND lazy. Not a
good combination for getting things done. I hold guys like Jim Cathey in
reverence and awe. Jim does more before breakfast than I do in a year.

 but driver's seat spring busted.

Mine too.

All in all, I'd say it was a $1000 car before the tranny died.

So you are NOT going to bid on it?

FWIW, looking in the manual for our '85 300D, i see the size listed

perhaps a call to someone like Rusty is in order, and/or others can
fill in the rest.

Re: [MBZ] bundt wheel widths

2008-03-29 Thread LWB250
Give me a VIN and I can tell you what was supplied

From my research while getting the correct wheels
for my former 250LWB (123 chassis) there were several
widths of the 14 bundt, and only one width for the
15 bundt, which was the correct wheel diameter from
the factory for this car. It had a set of steel
wheels that were the correct size - I doubt I would
have found a set of 15 bundts on this side of the
pond - they don't come around too often, and when they
do they command some serious coin.

Where is Arrowhead MB

Arrowhead is a big shopping area around 85th Ave and Bell road. The car
dealers are west of the 101 freeway. I have not seen the dealership so it
must
be pretty new.
