Re: [MBZ] W126 Instrument Panel pulling.

I haven't looked at my W126, but I assumed that it was similar to the W123.
I could remove the lower dash panel, reach up from the bottom and push the
cluster out with my fingers. I'm going to need to troubleshoot and repair
the dash lights.

Subject: [MBZ] U-Pullery

Score! The U-Pull had in a 190E 2.3, so I dropped by, even though
the weather was miserable, with heavy cold rain. It had both of the
rear taillights in excellent condition, so they are now mine, at $6
each. I also got both exterior heated mirror glasses, for $7 each. I
also got the Klima and Kickdown relays to go into the junkbox, or
perhaps onto eBay. They had a 280SE (116) that I grabbed the spare
tire holddown from. Maybe it'll fit, it looks vaguely like what I
might need.

They also had in a 300SE (126). It had one rear taillight lens in
excellent condition, now mine for $6. (SDL spare.) I also got its
auxiliary trunk latch tongue, which the SDL has been missing for
some time, and the two rear reading lamps (with the expensive bulbs)
for $1 each. I also got one exterior heated mirror, for $7. They also
had a 280SE (116) and it had its complete toolkit, though very rusty
and the roll was rotted. That was free.

Both the 190E and the 300SE still had the EHA valve I was looking for
for my 560 SL. Perhaps at least one of them is still good and will
work?

All in all a pretty good day, except for the weather.

[MBZ] 240D brake sensors

2008-11-08 Thread Curt Raymond
Spent some time staring at the brake sensor yesterday and couldn't figure out
how the heck the thing worked. Today looking at the DIY on MercedesShop I
realize its because the sensors are actually missing. The plastic junction
block whatsis is there but the sensor wires are not. They $1.50 from Rusty so I
figure I'll pick 'em up.

Interestingly the light is not on right now, is that normal?

Re: [MBZ] 240D brake sensors

2008-11-08 Thread Peter Frederick
The sensor system is quite simple -- the sensor is a plastic coated
wire. When the pads wear down enough, the plastic rubs off on the
tip of the wire and the wire contacts the disk. On the other end of
the wire is a lamp and 12V, so when the wire contacts the disk, the
lamp comes on.

Yes, it's normal for there to be no lamp with no sensors.

Reminds me to check my mother's TE as I've not put brakes on the
front yet after 7 years or so -- she only drives a couple thousand
miles a year these days.

Re: [MBZ] 401K confiscation discussion

2008-11-08 Thread Luther
The Patriot Act violates the Constitution in many ways MORE than a 401k
confiscation. Please do NOT get me on my soap box about this Daddy got
his ass kicked and I want revenge war. I said it was stupid and simply
about revenge to MANY college friends the moment it was announced by
this failed administration.

Why call it a confiscation? If you don't like that idea, then lets
call it a new tax. They do not say anything about removing the current
14% (7% employee 7% employer) Social Security taxes. They only speak
of creating a required 5% TAX in addition to the current SS tax. This
additional TAX will be managed by the current failing government system,
SS. This effectively increases the amount of money I unwillingly give
to the government; first by loosing tax breaks, and second by the
additional 5% TAX.

I do not want the government managing my money. I personally accept ALL
risk involved with investing my retirement in the stock market and do
not expect the government to bail me out.

[MBZ] Blower control: How should it work?

2008-11-08 Thread Phil Andrus
We're talking about an '85 300D, California model. A few days ago, I
noticed that the blower was working intermittently, and mostly not at
all. So, I removed it, cleaned it, removed and resoldered its amp,
and put it back together. Now it works well enough that I have heat
and defrost and maybe it is working as it should be. I really never
paid all that much attention to it before and the manual is not so
detailed as the convoluted mind of Benz's engineers.

Now, the trouble is, I don't know whether what I am observing is
correct operation or an anomoly. On defrost and high, the blower
starts immediately, which is what I would expect. On low, automatic,
and with the heat on any setting other than defrost, there is a delay
between my pushing the button and the fan coming on. This delay,
which seems quite regular, really confused my diagnostics.

Does anyone among you know the logic behind the blower motor controls?

So yesterday I tried installing one of the new brake hoses I'd bought. You're
supposed to use a flare wrench on the hard light yeah? I need to get one of

Anyway the male end at the calliper doesn't screw all the way in. About oh 5mm
of threads are left hanging out. The hose is definately seated all the way
though. So I put the old hose back on and while there isn't as much left out
theres a good 3mm of threads exposed.

Re: [MBZ] Blower control: How should it work?

2008-11-08 Thread Peter Frederick
Typically the blower will come on at the lowest speed only except on
defrost of if you have the high speed button pushed. It will then
adjust to the correct speed for the required conditioning, usually
after 10 or 15 seconds.

I think this is supposed to do two things -- prevent a blast of icy
cold air in the winter and to clear the damp air in the heater box
before it all ends up on the inside of the windows as condensation.

I know that on the W124 there is just such a delay, but that's a
different system. Also, it will only run on lowest speed until the
heater core warms up, and on my current 300D that's a mile or so.

Anyone have experience with these small units? I see them for ~$150, 2000

I have a 4500 watt that handles the fridge, TV and lights. That's all I really
need down here in the south.

However, I would like to have a back up for the back up that would be small
enough to haul around by hand and use away from the house.

Re: [MBZ] Blower control: How should it work?

2008-11-08 Thread Wilton Strickland
For settings other than defrost and high, a temp sensor determines how much
air is needed to satisfy what you're asking for, then it turns the fan on
very low or higher depending on how close the temp in the car is to what
you're asking for. Usually, if there's a wide difference between temp in
the car and what you're calling for, the fan will run faster; as the
difference gets smaller, the fan slows down. I seldom change the settings
in my 124 and 126; with the fan in AUTO, and the temp setting where I want
it, the fan just comes on slow or fast as the system needs it. Wife,
however, can't seem to understand, though she's been driving MB's for 29
years, wants the fan blowing the instant she releases the key after
starting, so she fiddles with the AC controls trying to get the fan on
immediately. I've been telling her, Leave it alone; it'll come on after it
has determined how much is needed. If starting cold in winter, for
example, fan will not start 'til some heat from engine coolant is available.

Those Doka's do go for a premium. And like-new condition

Exactly right. The system reacts gradually, so as to operate

Re: [MBZ] U-Pullery

2008-11-08 Thread Jim Cathey

The Pick-n-Pull/U-Pick-It prices here (Kansas City) are about
300% higher. Where the hell do you live?

Spokane, WA. I like to check out with one of the girls,
the total bill generally seems to be less with them. The
guys write down everything, whereas the girls pass over a
lot of the fiddly small stuff, and tend to eyeball guess
the size of lights (which are sold by the inch). Perhaps
their eyeball calibration is all screwed up due to the
dimensional lies they've been told for years?

The 126 light was broken, but it's odd as only the black
plastic forwards part was messed up. The PMMA lens part
was completely intact, and that's the part one generally
needs in a minor fender-bender.

Jim, all an excellent buy. When do you go next?

Next time I need something! I did leave a rock-pipped
116 fog light there, and the 116's Bilstein jack. Both
items I'm vaguely wondering if I shouldn't get. (I've
been collecting the fog lights for eventual upgrades to
the 123's. Convert the existing fogs to driving lights
and hang offical MB fogs under the bumper.) Even with
bad glass they're OK, as you can glue over pips. So long
as the reflector is still good.

This is a place where you actually need fog lights, some
years.

It's very weird that they had not one, but _two_ cars
there that both seem to have the exact EHA valve my SL
needs. (I stole mine to put on my wife's car, since hers
was leaking and we weren't driving mine.) I've been looking
for one since June 9 of 2007. Also odd was that their online
inventory only showed the 190E, neither the 300 SE nor 280 SE
were on the list. I just recognized their profiles in the
sea of cars as I walked out to the 190E. In the rain.

The 116 toolkit was fairly rusty, I may use the electric
rust-removal trick on it to see what happens. If so I'll
try to take some good before/after pictures. The pliers
are seized and they may not come back, but the rest looks
fine.

Anyway the male end at the calliper doesn't screw all the way in. About
oh 5mm of threads are left hanging out. The hose is definately seated all the
way though. So I put the old hose back on and while there isn't as much left
out there's a good 3mm of threads exposed. Normal?

I'd say so.

[MBZ] STUPID )*%^#@ caliper!

2008-11-08 Thread Curt Raymond
So the inner puck on the caliper WILL NOT retract... Dag.

Advance Autoparts can have 'em for my tomorrow if I order by 7pm for $75 apiece
for Bendix, Bimby wants $92 and of course it'll be Tuesday.
ATE are more money $91, and they can't have them until Tuesday. Bimby doesn't
list reman ATE.

The question is can I put Bendix in place of ATE assuming I replace BOTH sides?

I probably should have planned on this from the start, the car sat more than a
year... The metal things that go over the pucks and under the pads are mostly
rusted away...

I'd appreciate somebody coming back quick on this one, order by 7pm remember...

If you raise the hood and look at the underside of the grille, you'll see
a U-shaped clip fastened to the bottom end of the hood star whose tips
press against the inside of the grille. As 88-405 says,

1. Pull spring clip energetically down with water pump pliers and
turn to the LEFT by 90 degrees.

2. Make sure that the spring clip enters into the two grooves of
   the rosette.

3. Pull Mercedes star out of radiator shell in upward direction.

I got one for a friend at Meijer supermarket last spring. Regularly $150, paid
$90. Two stroke, runs on premix, Rated 1000W instantaneous, 850 continuous.
Harder to start than I expected. Weighs 40-45lb, if you just pull the starter
rope you yank it right off the ground, so you have to hold it down like a chain
saw. Reasonably quiet, but you're limited in what you can do with it. It could
run a refrigerator, but I bet it can't start one. Anything larger than this you
should definitely go for a 4 stroke.

I've had it (very minor) as long as I can remember, but I'm starting to lean
away from the polio theory and more towards something else, like CP. There's no
way to tell for sure.
When I was two, I got an early sample of the Sabin live culture polio vaccine. I
got stomach flu and had some paralysis (mostly left leg) about a week later. I
wasn't the only one who got sick after being immunized that day, but the
neighbor's daughter (several years older than me) only had flu symptoms. OTOH,
I'd already been vaccinated with the Salk stuff, so to get polio from the
vaccine I'd have had to pick up no immunity from the Salk vaccine and then had
the bad luck to get polio from the Sabin vaccine.

I'm still very much against continued use of the Sabin vaccine, especially since
even the CDC admits that the majority of the polio cases in the last 30 years
are vaccine induced. There's not much natural poliomyelitis in the world today,
and virtually none in the USA. I can't believe Thunderbird has 'poliomyelitis'
in its spelling dictionary, but not 'Obama' or even 'Osama'.

No I don't think he accidentally posted it to the wrong list, personally
I don't like that type of language on a semi-civilized chat list. Also
this is not the first time this sort of thing has come from this
individual and he was asked to not use those racial slurs, as it offends
and drags the other listers down with him in some respect. It makes us
look like a bunch of backwater racists who drive Mercs because Hitler
 was chauffeured around in them.
Further that post can be interpreted as an incitement to murder the
President elect, which may well be an illegal act.
I strongly suggest that you lay down some rules in this regard before it
 gets out of control.
I do not have a problem with people saying they do not like the
President elect because of his policies but when it is racist based, it
becomes another thing altogether. I dare say there are plenty of places
on the internet where racists can have a chat, like that stormfront
forum. I don't have a problem if people say they think Obama is stupid,
as was often the case with dubya but his African background should not
even come into it. He could not choose his heritage anymore than anyone
else, it's like another lister attacking Roosevelt's disability, did FDR
want to have polio? I am not saying being of a different skin color is a
disability but rather trying to say we are what we are, some things we
can choose and some we can't.

No I don't think he accidentally posted it to the wrong list,
 personally
I don't like that type of language on a semi-civilized chat list.
 Also
this is not the first time this sort of thing has come from this
individual and he was asked to not use those racial slurs, as it
 offends
and drags the other listers down with him in some respect. It makes
 us
look like a bunch of backwater racists who drive Mercs because Hitler
was chauffeured around in them.
Further that post can be interpreted as an incitement to murder the
President elect, which may well be an illegal act.
I strongly suggest that you lay down some rules in this regard before
 it
gets out of control.
I do not have a problem with people saying they do not like the
President elect because of his policies but when it is racist based,
 it
becomes another thing altogether. I dare say there are plenty of
 place
 s
on the internet where racists can have a chat, like that stormfront
forum. I don't have a problem if people say they think Obama is
 stupid,
as was often the case with dubya but his African background should
 not
even come into it. He could not choose his heritage anymore than
 anyone
else, it's like another lister attacking Roosevelt's disability, did
 FDR
want to have polio? I am not saying being of a different skin color
 is
 a
disability but rather trying to say we are what we are, some things
 we
can choose and some we can't.
End of the day you are in charge Kaleb, it is up to you to decide
 what
is tolerated and what is not and it is up to the individuals to
 decide
if they want to be part of what you decide.

Nuclear power plants smaller than a garden shed and able to power
20,000 homes will be on sale within five years, say scientists at
Los Alamos, the US government laboratory which developed the
first atomic bomb.

The miniature reactors will be factory-sealed, contain no weapons-
grade material, have no moving parts and will be nearly
impossible to steal because they will be encased in concrete and
buried underground.

The US government has licensed the technology to Hyperion, a New
Mexico-based company which said last week that it has taken its
first firm orders and plans to start mass production within five
years. 'Our goal is to generate electricity for 10 cents a watt
anywhere in the world,' said John Deal, chief executive of
Hyperion. 'They will cost approximately $25m [£13m] each. For a
community with 10,000 households, that is a very affordable $250
per home.'

Deal claims to have more than 100 firm orders, largely from the
oil and electricity industries, but says the company is also
targeting developing countries and isolated communities. 'It's
leapfrog technology,' he said.

The company plans to set up three factories to produce 4,000
plants between 2013 and 2023. 'We already have a pipeline for 100
reactors, and we are taking our time to tool up to mass-produce
this reactor.'

'Our goal is to generate electricity for 10 cents a watt anywhere in
the world,' said John Deal, chief executive of Hyperion. 'They will
cost approximately $25m [£13m] each. For a community with 10,000
households, that is a very affordable $250 per home.'

Deal claims to have more than 100 firm orders, largely from the oil
and electricity industries, but says the company is also targeting
developing countries and isolated communities. 'It's leapfrog
technology,' he said.

The company plans to set up three factories to produce 4,000 plants
between 2013 and 2023. 'We already have a pipeline for 100 reactors,
and we are taking our time to tool up to mass-produce this reactor.'

[MBZ] OT Maybe an answer? Who knows

2008-11-08 Thread harry watkins
This was on Drudge tonight and the whole article can be gotten there. $250 is
one months power bill for me, HEY, sign me up.

Nuclear power plants smaller than a garden shed and able to power 20,000 homes
will be on sale within five years, say scientists at Los Alamos, the US
government laboratory which developed the first atomic bomb.

The miniature reactors will be factory-sealed, contain no weapons-grade
material, have no moving parts and will be nearly impossible to steal because
they will be encased in concrete and buried underground.

The US government has licensed the technology to Hyperion, a New Mexico-based
company which said last week that it has taken its first firm orders and plans
to start mass production within five years. 'Our goal is to generate
electricity for 10 cents a watt anywhere in the world,' said John Deal, chief

The question is can I put Bendix in place of ATE assuming I replace BOTH
 sides?

I probably should have planned on this from the start, the car sat more than
a year... The metal things that go over the pucks and under the pads are
 mostly rusted away...

I'd appreciate somebody coming back quick on this one, order by 7pm

[MBZ] I just returned from a car deal gone sour

2008-11-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
So there is this car in OKC on craigslist. I email the guy a few times,
then tell him I can come Saturday (today) to pick it up. He first wants
to meet me before 8am. I tell him that is too early since I have a 2
hour drive. He then wants me to meet him at 6pm. I didnt really want
to be loading a car in the dark but OK. So he wants me to meet him at
the mcdonalds right off the turnpike. He shows up about 15 minutes late
and I follow him over to a nearby RV park where the car is. So he give
me the title, I give him the cash. He asks if I need his help loading
the car and I say no, I dont. So he takes off. Ok, so I get the car
loaded and about the time Im getting ready to leave this pickup truck
full of rednecks comes flying up. They guy gets out yelling that I am
stealing the car etc. I try to explain to him that I have the car on my
trailer, keys to the car, and a clear title signed off by the owner. He
says the guy(who I bought it off of) owes him 3k and he has a lien on
the car. I tell him to produce said lien. He cant. Turns out he is
the owner of the RV park. Anyway, so I call the cops and they finally
show up. I explain the situation to the officer and show him the title
etc. He starts to give me some crap saying I dont own the car because
its not in my name. I tell him that is correct because I just bought
the car and I have the title right here. I would not have had time to
get a title. Anyway, the cop says hes going to have to call into his
supervisor to see what to do. The rv park guy asks the cop something
and the cop tells him I have a title so I am the owner unless he can
come up with a lien or something. By this time the guy knows he cant do
anything to he starts backing down and asks me if he could make a copy
of the title so he can try and go after the guy. I told him I would
help him out anyway I could and he even had a couple of MB's he needs
parts for. So turned out OK. I would have been screwed if it was one
of those deals where there was no title for the car. Never again will I
meet somebody after dark like that, then let them leave before I do.

[MBZ] OT - photo panoramas

2008-11-08 Thread OK Don
I don't usually praise stuff from Redmond, but this is one cool tool --
http://research.microsoft.com/ivm/ice.html
It works far better than CS2 - it took a series of photos that I could
not get both the foreground and the background to line up (didn't
rotate on the lenses nodal point), and MICE made a perfect panorama
out of them - I can't find a seam in it anywhere. Just amazing. Even
balanced the exposure - all on auto -
YMMV, but I'm impressed.

i'm more sure that it isn't polio than anything else. my issue is that
everyone makes this polio claim. if you go to hyde park, all they do is
talk about his polio. obviously, he suffered from a disabling malady, but
to just keep repeated was polio doesn't seem right to me.

on a side note, i went bowling today with the church. you'd think this to
be a pretty safe activity, but my knees now are functioning particularly
poorly after bowling 3 games. i remember when the local bowling center back
in queens in the early 80s would have $1 games during weekdays and i'd bowl
15 to 25 games in a day with no ill effect whatever. guess a quarter
century of abuse can do that to a fella.

I've had it (very minor) as long as I can remember, but I'm starting to
lean away from the polio theory and more towards something else, like CP.
There's no way to tell for sure.
When I was two, I got an early sample of the Sabin live culture polio
vaccine. I got stomach flu and had some paralysis (mostly left leg) about a
week later. I wasn't the only one who got sick after being immunized that
day, but the neighbor's daughter (several years older than me) only had flu
symptoms. OTOH, I'd already been vaccinated with the Salk stuff, so to get
polio from the vaccine I'd have had to pick up no immunity from the Salk
vaccine and then had the bad luck to get polio from the Sabin vaccine.

I'm still very much against continued use of the Sabin vaccine, especially
since even the CDC admits that the majority of the polio cases in the last
30 years are vaccine induced. There's not much natural poliomyelitis in the
world today, and virtually none in the USA. I can't believe Thunderbird has
'poliomyelitis' in its spelling dictionary, but not 'Obama' or even 'Osama'.

 Mitch.

I have one of the four stroke 2000w models and I love it. It runs the sump
pump and lights very well if the power goes out. It will start the fridge
sometimes but it doesn't like it. Power is not very clean or steady. I
wouldn't suggest one for running a pc as it makes terrible interference when i
tried to run the tv. Works great for power tools too. Weighs maybe fifty
pounds. Runs for FIVE hours on one gallon of gas.

Anyone have experience with these small units? I see them for ~$150, 2000
watt, both 2 and 4 stroke.

I have a 4500 watt that handles the fridge, TV and lights. That's all I really
need down here in the south.

However, I would like to have a back up for the back up that would be small
enough to haul around by hand and use away from the house.

Thanks
