[MBZ] OT: Welding on the Ranger

2009-02-18 Thread Curt Raymond
Found a rust hole in the bed of the Ranger the other day. Right smack in the
middle of the bed, I think something must have kicked up from underneith and
scratched the paint. I don't think complaining to Frod will do any good, its an
'03 and I'm at least the second owner.

The hole is small, maybe a half dollar but I figure by the time I cut all the
rust out it'll probably be 4-5 across. I'm planning to weld in some overly
thick sheet steel, 16ga maybe? Anyhow I'd heard that when welding on newer
vehicles you need to disconnect all the computers so you don't burn them out...
The other option is of course to lift the bed off the pickup but that'll
involve disconnecting the lights and figuring some way to safely lift and keep
the thing raised, not sure how easy that will be. Of course the good thing is
if I do that I can weld from underneith too and I don't have to worry about
welding slag on the gas tank... Geez, now that I think about it I like this
idea more and more

Anyway thoughts on welding and saving computers is appreciated...

Get yourself a square foot of ribbed bed repair metal.
Fits better (making the welding easier) and looks better.

Some friends of mine refloored a Bronco with sheet metal scraps, hammers,
ox-acetylene, and brazing rod. If the truck had any computers, they would have
been safe.

That's safest. But as an EE I believe that if one can
_properly_ complete (ground) the welding circuit near the
site the current won't go far. The danger, of course, is
in mistakes that you might make. Let's say you were welding
on the exhaust and you had the clamp on the muffler. If you
were to accidentally contact the car's body, welding current
would run through the exhaust to the engine and down its
grounding strap and back through the body. Plenty of room
for mayhem there, given an O2 sensor in the usual exhaust,
plus engine electronics and anything that picked up ground
along the body somewhere.

I've gotta say that _not_ welding on top of the gas tank
sounds like a superior idea!

routinely weld on vehicles and I'm not sure they even disconnect the battery.

When did they start driving on the left hand side in Sweden?

Of the road? From the beginning. Of the car? 70's sometime.
There was a lot of legislative wrangling about the issue, so
finally the King just decreed the day and that was that. The
accident rate went down afterwards, too.

I coughed up the $300+ for a new one shortly after I got the '78 450SLC,

I liked this reader's comment:
I'm a mercedes technician, and I've layed down some pretty mean repair estimates
on those old 140 chassis. Especially the V12's. One guy bought one used for like
$8000 or so, it needed about $30,000 to attain some level of decency, not

The are all over the map. Some crazy people think they can get $1000 for a
really good set. They can't. NOS ones have sold recently on eBay UK for
around $400 per seat. I have sold some for around $80 - $100 for a complete
set (two seats plus hardware) but that comes from mixing and matching.I
think other people get more because I take honest pictures and actually show
people the condition.
