[MBZ] OT: Welding on the Ranger
Found a rust hole in the bed of the Ranger the other day. Right smack in the middle of the bed, I think something must have kicked up from underneith and scratched the paint. I don't think complaining to Frod will do any good, its an '03 and I'm at least the second owner. The hole is small, maybe a half dollar but I figure by the time I cut all the rust out it'll probably be 4-5 across. I'm planning to weld in some overly thick sheet steel, 16ga maybe? Anyhow I'd heard that when welding on newer vehicles you need to disconnect all the computers so you don't burn them out... The other option is of course to lift the bed off the pickup but that'll involve disconnecting the lights and figuring some way to safely lift and keep the thing raised, not sure how easy that will be. Of course the good thing is if I do that I can weld from underneith too and I don't have to worry about welding slag on the gas tank... Geez, now that I think about it I like this idea more and more Anyway thoughts on welding and saving computers is appreciated... -Curt -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] OT: Welding on the Ranger
I'd heard that when welding on newer vehicles you need to disconnect all the computers so you don't burn them out... That's safest. But as an EE I believe that if one can _properly_ complete (ground) the welding circuit near the site the current won't go far. The danger, of course, is in mistakes that you might make. Let's say you were welding on the exhaust and you had the clamp on the muffler. If you were to accidentally contact the car's body, welding current would run through the exhaust to the engine and down its grounding strap and back through the body. Plenty of room for mayhem there, given an O2 sensor in the usual exhaust, plus engine electronics and anything that picked up ground along the body somewhere. I've gotta say that _not_ welding on top of the gas tank sounds like a superior idea! -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I wouldn't want to be the cause of issues for Curt but my brother in law and my son are mechanics in a shop. They routinely weld on vehicles and I'm not sure they even disconnect the battery. Re: [MBZ] 1980 300D Climate Control.
I coughed up the $300+ for a new one shortly after I got the '78 450SLC, then changed the coolant every year - it was still working when I traded the car off. That was some five years of service. I think that a clean coolant system is the secret for max life from the evil chrysler system from hell. YMMV.
