Re: [MBZ] Cash for Clunkers thoughts

2009-07-01 Thread LarryT
Basically, by using the "Cash For Clunkers" deal, you are paying for your
own "deal". After all that $3500/$4500 comes from *some* place - and that
*some* place is, my friend, you and me! So if you and I are providing the
Cash, what exactly are you getting?

I think you're actually giving them your old, paid for car. Additionally.
it''ll take a lng time paying for gas at 20 mpg vs gas at 30mpg to make
those new car payments - actually, I haven't run the numbers, but I'd bet
the payback never happens. - not in any reasonably measured time frame at
least. (lightyears maybe??) $500 or more in monthly payments? no, no, no,
no. this is a bd idea.

OK, we've proven that those on this list aren't stoopid enuf to fall for the
"Cash Fer Clunkers" fiasco - how do we convince the rest of the US this is a
shell game - and only the politicians will win anything?

I would stay far away from the clunkers deal. It is a flat packet of cash
that is just trading hands from the feds to dealer to take in old cars and
not have to play the trade in game. All you would ever get is $4500 value
toward the new car, even were your car worth more. The dealer does not
have to fiddle with or ship the thing to auction lots, it just goes away.
In the interregnum, you are shelling out far more for a lesser vehicle
that will not "save" you money. Fuel costs would take decades to recoup,
and your interest payments will far outweigh the pennies per gallon you
save.

The minute you drive that car off the lot it is worth $4500 less, so
trading in your clunker isn't buying you much, other than a new car that
you have to pay higher taxes, insurance on. And payments, or loss of
your capital. Buying a new car really makes little sense when you can
find a decent used car for reasonable money, and are prepared to deal
with the maintenance issues that arise on an older car.

My wife asked last year when gas was high, should we sell the Suburban
(2000). It is bought, paid for, great condition, runs fine no troubles,
insurance and taxes are low. To recoup any gas savings by selling it
(low) and buying some other thing would take years if it ever happened.

But some people like a new car, and don't care much about the financial
aspects, I guess that is what keeps the car companies in business (or
the taxpayer, but that is another thread).

I was thinking about this new cash for clunkers program that starts
tomorrow and was wondering whether it would smart to take advantage of
it. I have a very nice 1993 Cadillac Sedan Deville. As I understand
the requirements of the program

1. Owner must have owned the car for at least one year
2. Must trade it in on a NEW car
3. it must be 1984-2001 model year
4. It must get 18 mpg (combined) as calculated by EPA on their website
fueleconomy.gov

5. To get the full $4500, the new car must get at least 10 mpg better.

My Cadillac qualifies (in a few months - I haven't had it a year). So,
the question I am wrestling with is this: Is it worth it?

I hate buying a brand new car. If it was my car (as opposed to my
wife's), I would not be able to sell it/trade it every 9-12 months. I
would lose money trying to sell a new car that quickly. HOWEVER, my
car is certainly not worth $4500 and not taking advantage of this is
like lose a few thousand dollars. On the other hand, if I bought a new
car, those monthly car payments would eat up the $4500 pretty quick. I
don't really see any new car that is all that exciting at least not in
the price range I would interested in.Thoughts?

[MBZ] 1983 300SD radio fuse

2009-07-01 Thread kevin kraly
It's time to get my 300SD prepped to sell it, and it simply has to have a
working radio. Right now, the radio doesn't come on, and the power antenna
motor isn't working either. My questions are:

Are these run by the same fuse?
Can anyone give me the exact location in the fuse box for the fuse/fuses
involved? I no longer have a competent helper to assist me since my dad's
health has gone downhill. Also, he was the primary driver, so it sits more
than 90% of the time. I'm hoping to get $1500 out of it if anyone's
interested. It needs an AC compressor and a vac lock pump. It does have a new
lower passenger's side ball joint and front pads.

Totally. The only case that wasn't that way was my landcruiser, and that was
the three hour drive from the airport, plus he left it at school and had gone
home for vacation.

I cut him slack, since I paid half of what the parts were worth for a running
landcruiser that I wheeled for two years now.

So we know rebuilt r4 compressors are not worth a crap. What about
rebuilt a6's or nippo? Are those decent or also should only use
new? What about rebuilt Yorks?

[MBZ] Adsit

I have never heard a good word for Adsit. George Murphy does not like them
either.
I purchased a heater fan motor new from them several years ago; it came without

different from the "interval" relay. I cannot locate where this

relay goes in my car!

I can think of three wiper relays a car might have:

The main one
One for a wagon's rear window
Headlight wipers.

I don't know which one you have there. I do know that on
a R107 the wiper relay is just above the gas pedal.

I also saw listed a 123 821 00 63 as some kind of wiper relay.

Re: [MBZ] Replacing a cylinder head on a W123 turbodiesel

2009-07-01 Thread Loren Faeth
try PGA, they are in your backyard, and you can go yell at them
in person if you don't like their head.
Otherwise, try car-part.com, put in your car info and you should get
a list of junkyards with a head. PGA or your independent shop should
know who is good to work on MB heads. Get the valve job done
locally. you WILL still need to adjust the valves, on assembly, and
at regular intervals. You or your indy should be able to install it.

If you strike out at PGA and car-part.com, call other local
junkyards, or whatever tri-star in phoenix is called now. If you are
a member of MBCA, there are ads in the back of the Star.

Have you called RUsty? I'll bet he can find you a good used head, or
a rebuilt head.

I know several people who are extremely wealthy, and most drive used

It is not a big secret that that mindset is _how_ they got

I know it, this mower has through Friday, if I can't get it working by then
I'll suck it up and get the Honda. It'll be a power boost and probably way
more reliable. I dislike that this motor has points... I've never had any
luck messing with points. Electronic ignition I just replace parts until it
works again. Points I gotta kill a chicken and dance around in the dark in

Re: [MBZ] I've got Car Fever: was Re: Opinions about '89 300E

2009-07-01 Thread Curt Raymond
The big 3 automakers until quite recently were using engines largely developed
in the '50s. Well proven old technology made mostly out of iron.

MB, Porche, BMW etc have been pushing technology for decades and when you push
technology you get failures, the Vega, Corvair, and Edsel are all examples of
that...

In the '80s and '90s it got worse because bean counters got in charge of
production schedules and even in some cases engineering so stuff was built to a
price and on a schedule rather than "to do it right". The biodegradeable wiring
for instance was a push from the German government so MB must have rushed their
solution to market. I suspect the single roller chains were a cost cutting
measure. Sometimes you make a move like that and win (and we never hear about
those) and sometimes you don't (and you hear about those forever).

Hi Don,
I've always been a fan of the Crown Vic.  Big car, lots  of room and
great V8.  I'd look carefully at the AT and check how it was serviced.

Question - MB (and others manufacturers of very expensve cars) make cars
that we later find have serious flaws.  Like the biodegradable wiring
harness in W140s, the rod bender Diesel 140, etc.  Porsche has had probems
also - rear main seal leaks, clutch problems, etc.

Yet I don't recall the Ford V8 having built in problems.  Is that
something to do with the manufactuing scale of a giant like Ford and
relatively small fry like MB and Porsche?

I guess I'm wondering why MB builds a $50k+  sedan ($80K+ in the case of
a W140) and it's not perfect in every way?  Same for Porsche - $80K + and
they end up with problems that their road tests and dyno tests should have
located.

Perhaps Ford has major problems but they are relatively cheap to fix and
thus we don't hard about them?

Thx -

Re: [MBZ] Cash for Clunkers thoughts

2009-07-01 Thread Redghost
I would stay far away from the clunkers deal. It is a flat packet of
cash that is just trading hands from the feds to dealer to take in old
cars and not have to play the trade in game. All you would ever get
is $4500 value toward the new car, even were your car worth more. The
dealer does not have to fiddle with or ship the thing to auction lots,
it just goes away. In the interregnum, you are shelling out far more
for a lesser vehicle that will not "save" you money. Fuel costs would
take decades to recoup, and your interest payments will far outweigh
the pennies per gallon you save.

The minute you drive that car off the lot it is worth $4500 less, so
trading in your clunker isn't buying you much, other than a new car
that you have to pay higher taxes, insurance on. And payments, or
loss of your capital. Buying a new car really makes little sense
when you can find a decent used car for reasonable money, and are
prepared to deal with the maintenance issues that arise on an older
car.

My wife asked last year when gas was high, should we sell the
Suburban (2000). It is bought, paid for, great condition, runs fine
no troubles, insurance and taxes are low. To recoup any gas savings
by selling it (low) and buying some other thing would take years if
it ever happened.

But some people like a new car, and don't care much about the
financial aspects, I guess that is what keeps the car companies in
business (or the taxpayer, but that is another thread).

understand the requirements of the program

1. Owner must have owned the car for at least one year
2. Must trade it in on a NEW car
3. it must be 1984-2001 model year
4. It must get 18 mpg (combined) as calculated by EPA on their
website fueleconomy.gov
5. To get the full $4500, the new car must get at least 10 mpg
better.

My Cadillac qualifies (in a few months - I haven't had it a year).
So, the question I am wrestling with is this: Is it worth it?

I hate buying a brand new car. If it was my car (as opposed to my
wife's), I would not be able to sell it/trade it every 9-12
months. I would lose money trying to sell a new car that quickly.
HOWEVER, my car is certainly not worth $4500 and not taking
advantage of this is like lose a few thousand dollars. On the
other hand, if I bought a new car, those monthly car payments would
eat up the $4500 pretty quick. I don't really see any new car that
is all that exciting at least not in the price range I would
interested in.Thoughts?

A neighbor found my great granny dead at the kitchen table one morning,
she had eaten breakfast, stacked the dishes and moved them to the side
then put her head down on her arms on the table. He noticed at 5AM she
wasn't out working the garden as she always did, so went to check on
her. I can't remember if she was 96 or 98. She was a great woman,
still cooked on a big ass wood fired stove in the kitchen that the house
(a real honest log cabin from the 1800s) was probably built around. She
was half Cherokee, kept her .38 close by, and would not hesitate to use it.

That is similar to my plan, if goobers in Sprinter vans don't get me first.

[MBZ] W123 orphan wiper relay

2009-07-01 Thread andrew strasfogel
For my 1985 300TD, I purchased a used relay for the front wipers. The part
number of this relay is 000 821 08 63. It has three pins on each side and
one metal pin on the end that is slightly lower than the other six. it is
different from the "interval" relay. I cannot locate where this 0008210863
relay goes in my car!

Is this indeed the main wiper relay for my car, and if so, does anyone know
exactly where it belongs? There is a relay under the dash near the interval
wiper relay that is connected to a bracket but it has different pin
placements.

Re: [MBZ] Cash for Clunkers thoughts

2009-07-01 Thread tyler
IMO nobody with financial sense would buy a new car, regardless of their
income level, because of the enormous instant depreciation when the car
goes from being labeled as "new" to "used" the second the title is
transferred into your name. I know several people who are extremely
wealthy, and most drive used (but new condition) cars they purchase with
cash. People I know who have new cars are generally low income and live
month to month and think of things only in terms of monthly payments
rather than long term costs.

Somebody a few days ago said to me "it's great that you can drive these
old Mercedes, but it wouldn't work for most people unless they knew how
to do all of their own work." I really doubt that even paying a shop to
maintain an 80s diesel Benz like an aircraft and keep it in perpetual
new condition, would cost as much as the payments on the cheapest of new
cars. And a well maintained older Benz only has maintenance costs- it
will resell for it's purchase price.

There seems to be some sort of myth that an older car is less reliable,
which is often used to justify the purchase of a new one. In my opinion
reliability problems are virtually always due to maintenance issues, and
have almost nothing to do with the age (or mileage) of a car beyond the
fact that people are more likely to neglect needed work on an older car
(but that's up to the owner)!

SO, I'm friends with the owner of the local Indy shop. He just moved from
one part of KC to another, after 26 years in the same location. He asked me
if I'd like to help him sell his old stock. SURE!

So I started putting some stuff up on Ebay this weekend. If you're
interested, here is the auction number of one item: 200357443812
from there, you can click to see my other auctions.

There are THOUSANDS of parts to sell, so if you're looking for something,
let me know (part number is nice, but I'll try to find it for you if you
don't know). I'll let you know if I have the part. I am free to set the
price, as long as it's reasonable. The owner wants the parts OUT of the
warehouse, so I can pretty much beat any other price.

Some rare things in there (tail lights for 600 limo) to brand new 123
fenders. Most stuff is genuine MB, but some is aftermarket.

Hi Don,
I've always been a fan of the Crown Vic. Big car, lots of room and
great V8. I'd look carefully at the AT and check how it was serviced.

Question - MB (and others manufacturers of very expensve cars) make
cars that we later find have serious flaws.

I guess I'm wondering why MB builds a $50k+ sedan ($80K+ in the case
of a W140) and it's not perfect in every way? Same for Porsche - $80K +
and they end up with problems that their road tests and dyno tests should
have located.

Perhaps Ford has major problems but they are relatively cheap to fix
and thus we don't hard about them?

5.5hp in a 2009 engine isn't squat.
The ratings have gotten out of hand, to where a 25hp engine might make
14hp with
muffler, installed in the mower, if you're lucky. If that Snapper came

You know those $799 lawn tractors with the $500 vertical shaft engines in

Try to find one at a garage sale for $100.

S'what I figured (man Firefox's spell checker loves me!).
Small engine warehouse has an 11hp Honda for ~$400 out the door if it comes to
that. I'm gonna pick up a carb kit today and try it in my spare Tecumseh 8hp. I
spect that'll get it to run but the governor linkages are slightly boogered...
If I can't get it to go I'll order the Honda...

5.5hp in a 2009 engine isn't squat.
The ratings have gotten out of hand, to where a 25hp engine might make 14hp
with
muffler, installed in the mower, if you're lucky. If that Snapper came with a 7
or 8hp, I'd be looking at a 10.5hp at a minimum.
You know those $799 lawn tractors with the $500 vertical shaft engines in them?
Try to find one at a garage sale for $100.

Mitch.

Try the other rental agencies. I once rented in Buffalo and drove to Boston,
most agencies wouldn't I forget which one it was that finally let me, Hertz
maybe?

Otherwise call the airport limo folks, that kind of ride during daytime hours

2009-07-01 Thread LarryT
That's always made me wonder too - a $30k car (average price these days)
with a DP of say, $5000 in the form of a trade in and you're still financing
$25k. Even at a cut rate interest rate od 3.99% the monthly payment is
~$460/mo. Add a house/apt - $800 min - and you're up to $1260. add food
and you're at $1560 which is $18720 per year. To make that you;d need to
earn ~$25000 per year. But to be realistic you need little details like
insurance, gas, maintanence, utilities (not insignificant) so it's hard to
image how people afford new cars much less $50K SUVs.

"If 'universal health care' as
proposed by obama passes, it
will demand rationing of care -

seller says "This car is rough and ready".

Given the price (around here, $1000-1500 is asking price for a non-runner) I'd

I don't know who you are referring to as the "old dude." I started this

But, in case you are referring to me, I am 36 years old. I may drive an

5.5hp in a 2009 engine isn't squat.
The ratings have gotten out of hand, to where a 25hp engine might make 14hp with
muffler, installed in the mower, if you're lucky. If that Snapper came with a 7
or 8hp, I'd be looking at a 10.5hp at a minimum.
You know those $799 lawn tractors with the $500 vertical shaft engines in them?
Try to find one at a garage sale for $100.

In other words, knock 10% off a $45,000 E320D with a clunker trade, and still

I bet nobody knows. I bet nobody read the legislation. All I've ever
heard was that they had to be titled, licensed, insured by the current
owner for at least a year.

As far as it being a good deal, consider that you'll lose your "clunker
cash" in depreciation as soon as you drive the new car off the lot.

I just talked about this with my mother-in-law the other day. People take 7
year loans, thats how they pay for it...

My in-laws bought an '08 Ford Fusion for $3,000 under book. Nice car, lots of
space. It replaces a Cherokee which I hated riding in the back of. The Fusion
has the same space in the back seat with the front seats all the way back that
the Cherokee had with the front seats pulled up. Much more suitable.
She's a little worried about it in the snow so I'm going to buy her snowtires.
Nokians I think to fit with my Finnish heritage...

2009-07-01 Thread Curt Raymond
Russ,

Can you check what Snapper he's got and what motor? The only one I can find on
their website in vertical shaft (which the rear engine riders require) is only
5.5hp. Most of the Snapper guys would scoff and say its too small but I'm
curious.

Not curious to lay out $130 and find out but curious still.

Curt,

A Buddy replaced the engine on a Snapper he picked up for free (Dead engine)
with one from Harbor Freight. He's on his second season on it. So far he's
had no problems with it.
It's a Chinee rip off of the Honda design.

He figures if he gets two or three mowing seasons out of it he's got his
moneys worth.

The mowing season around here (South Louisiana) runs from Mar. to Nov.
He cuts 2 1/2 acres every week to two depending on the rain we get.

I probably should have mentioned that the problem is that its a vertical shaft
motor and most of the less expensive motors are horizontal shaft...
A 601 would look probably look funny standing straight up. Might effect

Last night I set to seeing what it would take to redo the carb on my spare 8hp.
Looks like its actually not that bad. I'd messed with it last fall and got
