2010-01-15 Thread Allan Streib
For cleanup, I like the AntiMalware tool from malwarebytes.org. Spybot SD is
also good. Last time I did a cleanup I had to use them multiple times in
succession to remove all infection. Also had to work in Safe Mode until
everything was cleaned up.

F-Secure also has a Rescue CD which I've used. It is a live CD that you
can boot off of. It will boot into Linux and scan your hard drive for infected
files. Using this is probably a last ditch attempt. It takes a long time to
scan, and I don't think their virus definitions are as up-to-date as the
others. Last time I used it it did not remove the specific malware I was
dealing with. On the other hand by not booting into Windows at all it is
preventing any chance for the malware to activate and defend itself.

Yep, the last 10 years or so. I'm livid whenever I think about it.
Supposedly the EPA drove them to it, our air was so 'polluted'
due to particulate count that they stopped sanding the roads

I ordered a Left I/O Board and put it in, and the Macbook lives! Lots

together, hit the power button and it came to life! Apple charges $1200

maybe 4-5 hr on the thing. I might become Dr Mac.

took that out too, and lo, there was all the crap under it and the
board was completely nasty, oxidized, schmutzed-up. You could see
where the liquid was, probably shorted in there or something. I'll
clean it all out before reassembling. They had replacements for $90
so ordered one, will see if that makes it go again.
Whole teardown was like 2hr, the instructions are extremely good, and
worth paying them for the part. Lots of extremely fiddly little bits

[MBZ] Penetrating Oil - Acetone ATF

cable transplant (at least) for the new screen I got since the wires
are partially torn off the plug, and I need to check to see which LCD
I have in there anyway.

That means complete teardown, disassemble the two screens, put the
correct one in the good frame, put the correct cable on, and then re-
assemble.

This is almost as much fun as cleaning watches, and somewhat less
fiddly.

The caution: Acetone evaporates quickly. You must keep your brew in
a sealed container, or you will end up with just atf over time.

Here is the original test
AG

Found this on a MGB list I'm on. Don't know how scientific it is but it
seems convincing.

Here's some interesting
comparisons on penetrating oils.

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrates for break-out
torque on rusted nuts. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular
penetrates with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from
a
scientifically rusted environment.

*Penetrating Oil and Average Load*

Nothing. 516 pounds

WD-40... 238 pounds

PB Blaster 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench. 127 pounds

Kano Kroil... 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix. 53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a home brew mix of 50-50 automatic transmission
fluid and acetone. Note the home brew was better than any commercial
product in this one particular test. Note also that Liquid Wrench is about
as
good as Kroil for about 20% of the price.

Take care -

Wow, that is a beauty. IIRC the S4 is the most desirable model---the
fastest, most refined version of what was already an insanely fast and
refined car when new.

The automatic was sourced from Mercedes, as I recall, because Porsche
didn't have one of their own that could handle the torque of the V-8.
Or was it that they didn't have one of their own, period? The first
928 was a '78 or '79, which is before the 944 (which had a slushbox as
an option)---was there an automatic 924? I know there was no
automatic 911 until the 964 in '89, unless you count the Sportomatic

What a bummer. Good thing there are lots of scrap microwaves to use
to keep

filling in the holes.

I use cut-off scraps from the muffler shop for this kind of thing.
I got some more today, and more flux-core wire.

Yeah BUT pretty soon the car will weigh so much that a 240 diesel
engine will not be able to get it moving.

Then I've got some room for improvement if I ever need it.
It has a 200 diesel in it now!

Re: [MBZ] alternator rebuild?

2010-01-15 Thread Mountain Man
My son took the dead alternator out and swapped the back end with good
brushes and bearing and put it back in the car. Now what we need is
bearing and brushes to fix this dead alternator. Plus, we need all
the brackets for mounting to engine.

Does anyone have a 616 engine with alternator that you can part out to
me? I would ask Kleb, but it is cold in OK and he is all busy making
money in Nashville.
Thanks - anyone?

Re: [MBZ] A heartbreaker

2010-01-15 Thread Walt Zarnoch
Quite a sobering thing to read about...

I nearly had a case of fireball with my project truck.
I had just put the gauge cluster back in after a good inside and out
cleaning, turned the key to check the gauges worked, dome light dimmed low
and the cluster started smokeing.

Turns out one of the sensor wires shorted out due to all the wigling needed
to unplug the cluster. Ended up frying the flexi board on the cluster, but
luckily it didn't catch fire. Quite a scarry experience. Took forever to get
the smell out.

It's always been my plan to have a CO2 extinguisher behind the seat just in
case, and I have a small dry chem that might go in also.
