They do, and electrolytics can dry out. Open it carefully and replace the

capacitance.

[MBZ] Memorial to the 115 240D, Re: CL annoyances

2010-02-03 Thread Tim C.
It's in my driveway, feel free to stop by with your mechanic and take a
look. If you call before you come I'll make sure the battery is charged.
Durham NC 27705.

:)

Seriously: dark brown in and out, the one that lost oil pressure in the
interstate a few months ago (maybe almost a year now?), that story should
be in archives (as is my address). US, auto, NA of course. Believe it is
the original 616 engine, as it has a separately-oiled injection pump
without altitude compensation. No bottom rust, a few poorly-treated spots
of bird droppings on the roof and hood (expecting to use the random orbital
and cover those with at least rattlecan before it's really up, so it has an
honest chance). Good interior, have to look and make sure it isn't leaking
though. Heater blower did -not- work, and had been replaced at least once
before (hole around speaker). Engine kind of weakly turns on the starter
but with no oil pressure, and water system appears to be slowly leaking
down since it has been parked. Had the pencil glow plugs when I got it,
unknown mileage (>>200k though I'd bet).

I think I'm the third owner, and that #1 dumped it two years back because
the heater fan quit, based on my discussion with the prior-to-me owner. AC
worked well, though I think I had to have it in defrost mode - it's been a
while, but I remember suspecting the freon tube was either bad or that I'd
put it back in the wrong place when I did the cooling blower. Factory
Becker that I might keep, even though it needs some electrical work. No
maintenance records, but I have the original sales literature, and the
print FSMs.

The thing I loved about it was that the transmission was perfect - super
smooth, and wouldn't even hint at going backward in gear. Ran well too,
once it got going, and did fine going up and down the weak hills around
here. It has been parked since it failed, I haven't even taken off the oil
pan or run a compression test - the 300D has taken all my auto service time
(and money!).

I have until wife's patience runs out for the driveway to get cleared, so
probably until March or April to make it gone on my terms before the junk
men get it. If that's it then I'll take the good bits (Becker, ACCI,
pencil glow plugs, and the oddly-valuable radiator) off, but hopefully
someone will have some time and space to put it back right - if I can keep
the 300D from sinking all my time, and no one else has bitten by then,
maybe I'll hide it in a storage unit near the office and work on it at
lunchtimes.

It is difficult here as there are lots of 123s with fairly low miles
getting dumped, and it's hard to justify a new or even used engine when you
can get an entire mostly-rust-free 123 300D/DT (and even a few TDs and
126s) with about 200Kmi for $500-$1500 basically once a week during spring
and summer, and the occasional dirt-cheap semi-functioning 107. I do like
the 115 style but that only is worth so much effort.

I paid too much for it, but if nothing else it got me out of Volvos and
into diesels so it was probably a reasonable ROI. I still kind of want to
keep it, since I like its look and I know everything that's wrong on it,
but I'm not giving it a good home, and it just seems sad to let it
deteriorate.

Letting go is hard to do...

So, why did MB sell manual tranny turbo Diesels to the rest of the world?
The technical data books clearly list such --- drivability can't be the
issue - perhaps emissions, but most likely their idea about our market.

My '70 220D had a manual altitude compensating adjustment on the top rear of
the IP - It was marked in 2k increments, IIRC. You had to get out, open the
hood, and turn it to match your altitude.

Re: [MBZ] 300SD MASSIVE OIL LEAK

2010-02-03 Thread Dan Weeks
As you all suggested, the problem was a leak in top line to the oil
cooler, as a result of a loose belt that nicked the hose, as the
result of a bent alternator belt tensioner. Had to disconnect the
engine mounts and jack up the engine to get the line out. No leak now,
though. Thanks for the tip-- dead on, as usual.

There is a small timer I used to go check his cars out. Indian guy
with a penchant for jags and benz. He was not too keyed in about the
issues with each marque, but he could talk a fast game. I think he
got the lot from his dad.

Now this is not on a corner, the 7-11 had that spot. He was next
parcel down from the corner on the busy thoroughfare. Dad has the
other parcel next to the 7-11 kitty corner from the car lot. Dad ran
the repair shop for Benz and jags. There was as walk through at the
corners to get to each store.

Never purchased from him. He had an SDL on the lot that I was
enamored of. After looking at it hard and talking with him a bunch, I
decided it would be about as good a purchase as the POS SDL. Had the
trap, #14 head and I suspect it needed a head gasket.

cars that seem to be one- or two-man operations operating with
extremely low overhead. They have a warehouse in an out-of-the-way
industrial park where the rents are cheap, with a dozen or two cars
in

it at any one time. They advertise primarily on Craigslist or Auto
Trader, again to keep costs down.

I suspect a majority of the cars sold this way have been purchased at
dealer auctions in other states. Problem is, auction cars are, as a
rule, crap; new car dealers keep good trade-ins for their used lot,
and dump the rest. You can give them a thorough detail to make them
look like creampuffs to the unsuspecting buyer, but they're still,
ultimately, crap. So it's not a particularly honest nor honorable
way

to make a living.

You are talking about wholesalers. They come in, buy dealer trades,
then resell them to other indi used car dealers. Depending on the
market, they will send them to auction if they are sitting around too
long. Depending on how they have them floored, each day they are
sitting costs them money.

I'm not sure it's true that auction cars are crap. I've bought two, and
both were great values. A '96 Infiniti, 3 years old at the time, for
$7k (Wife still driving/loving 10+ years later), and an '85 123.190 for
$1100, which I sold three years later for $2300. Most of the crap at
the auctions I've been to was very apparent as crap and easily avoided,
but there is a big risk.

A friend looking for a used Toyota Camry locally said that the new car
dealers he visited put all their trade-ins for the week in the back lot,
on Saturday or Sunday the "Auction Guys" would come through and make
offers/take their pick (to re-sell at the dealer only auction), and what
was left over would either be sold at the dealer's used car lot or at
the public auto auction. These dealers were not interested in putting
any effort into selling their trade-ins, so the best went to auction or
got picked-off by the employees. Several of the Toyota dealer mechanics
would skim - fix - resell as well, for personal gain on after-hours, but
they stuck to the Toyotas.

probably just wrote me off as some sort of nut. Since then, if I get what
amounts to a silly offer, I usually just
don't bother to respond.

When I sold my Mazda Protege, it was a good car for a college kid and
I was asking an appropriate amount for that - nonetheless people would
offer me $200 etc. sight unseen, but no one really was interested in
coming out to look at it. I listed everything good and bad - had a
lot of time in that car, and a few years of progressive maintenance.
(This was pre-Craigslist, back in Usenet days.) After a couple weeks
I listed it in the paper with a 10-word description and sold it a few
days later.

When I sell my '92 Volvo 940 on CL a few years ago, I had
virtually no interest. Three offers of $100 as a junk car, and a
couple of vaguely curious people who were asking questions like it was
a total rust bucket with no maintenance that hadn't been driven for
years. Donated it to the local NPR affiliate, who auctioned it off
for more than I was asking, and I did scads better than $100 with the
tax deduction while making the world safe for humanity.

In retrospect, my problem in both cases was that
 - I knew precisely all (and I do mean all) of the positives and negatives, and
 - I listed them in the ad in friendly "good" and "bad" sections.
If I had listed the Volvo as "runs, new tires, black" I'd probably
have gotten a few dozen gawkers and a few realistic offers, given my
proximity to Chapel Hill and the other ads I've seen. Instead
everyone seemed to think it must be a thousand times worse than I was
describing and so stayed away, at least based on a couple e-mail
trains from the time. It strikes me as absurd, and it wastes
everyone's time, but it's like folks are expecting to get "taken for a
ride" when they go to buy a car, and so can't believe that anyone
would really have disclosed -everything- that they know/suspect is
wrong.

Long and short, when I list my W115 240D - which still lacks a
functional engine, and that I think SWMBO has decided (recognized?)
I'm too lazy to get and install, and so now wants out of the driveway
- it will be short and sweet (and of course accurate). If you ask a
knowledgeable question I will reply with a knowledgeable answer. If
you ask a stupid question I will reply succinctly and encourage you to
come look at it with a mechanically-inclined friend. I'm a lousy
salesman so there's a decent chance it will still end up on the NPR
scrapper's block... but we'll see.

2010-02-03 Thread ernest breakfield

peter,

i've had good luck with the Kershaw Onion series; very easy to open
with one hand, and more importantly lock both open *and* closed. (this
might be more important to people who commute on 2 wheels, as it's
preferable to many to have a knife *stay* closed if there's a chance you
might fall on it...)

i've only had Leek and Scallion models, both of which have the
Speedsafe opening feature. all of the ones i've had are labeled US made,
though i understand some models now are not. looking through the details
on the various offerings, it looks like there is even some choice as to
what materials the blades are made of, and a variety of blade types and
coatings.
while they might not meet the scrutiny of a serious knife
connoisseur, they've been very cost-effective for me for what i've used
them for, and i haven't had any problems with any that would cause be to
hesitate to recommend them.

cheers!

There's nothing like the good feeling you get after a successful DIY
repair, and it's increased proportionally by the amount of money
saved. The dog chewed the cord off my sister's Oreck vacuum cleaner
just outside where it exits the machine. Price for a new cord and
labor was going to be $75, so there it sat for nearly 2 years. It
was too close to the case to put a splice right there, and it would
have looked ugly. I flipped it over, removed the bottom screws,
removed the connector to the motor and the wirenut to the switch and
extracted what was left of the cord. . I trimmed back the cord to
expose the two wires, stripped them, installed the cord into the
gromet that holds it into the case, cut the connector and installed
it onto the cord once again, slipped everything into place,
reconnected the motor connector and the wirenut to the switch and it
was done!! The cord is about 1.5' shorter, but that's it. It works
just as well as it did, and I only charged my sister $50 :D

Most folks do not buy a car for the power or handling etc. They buy an
image - especially if it is a Jag or
something similar. They want to be seen in the car. That is all that
matters. They might learn to like the handling
etc and miss it if they swap to something lesser but they don't buy it for
that reason in the first place.

You make some excellent points there. I am reminded of a secretary we
had once at this place I worked for awhile (on site at A Government
Agency), an older woman who was, uh, not too bright. Anyway, one day
she was talking about her new car her hubby had bought her, a new Jaguar
XJ, and how sporty and fast it was and all, and the radio and all the
gadgets and whatnot. I asked her if she was up to exploring the
benefits of driving a powerful high-performance car like that, and she
looked at me and said, "Huh?"

Now that right there was a recipe for a complete disaster, maybe her
husband had a new girlfriend or something and the Jag was worth it.
But, she probably enjoyed it, and wouldn't have known the difference
between the XJ and a Toyota with a leaper on the hood.

In 1954 I bought my mother a vacuum cleaner; one of those horizontal tank
types that slides along on the floor on coupla rails behind you as you pull
it by the hose; probably 'bout $150. I used it a couple of years later to
spray paint my future FIL's fence; also spray painted rear fender on my '51
Chevy 'bout the same time. After she died in '96, my sister gave me the '54
vac cleaner, and I learned that some time in late '70's, an oil furnace
repairman used it to clean her furnace, and she stopped using it shortly
thereafter - 'said it wouldn't work. Sister bought her a new, smaller,
canister-type vac cleaner. Immediately when I got home with the '54
cleaner, I opened it to clean filter, etc. Filter was completely blocked
with soot, courtesy of the furnace repairman many years before. After
thorough cleaning of the filter, etc., I use the '54 vac cleaner now to
operate my $2 sucker.

There's nothing like the good feeling you get after a successful DIY
repair, and it's increased proportionally by the amount of money saved.
The dog chewed the cord off my sister's Oreck vacuum cleaner just outside
where it exits the machine. Price for a new cord and labor was going to
be $75, so there it sat for nearly 2 years. It was too close to the case
to put a splice right there, and it would have looked ugly. I flipped it
over, removed the bottom screws, removed the connector to the motor and
the wirenut to the switch and extracted what was left of the cord. . I
trimmed back the cord to expose the two wires, stripped them, installed
the cord into the gromet that holds it into the case, cut the connector
and installed it onto the cord once again, slipped everything into place,
reconnected the motor connector and the wirenut to the switch and it was
done!! The cord is about 1.5' shorter, but that's it. It works just as
well as it did, and I only charged my sister $50 :D

Re: [MBZ] WAS Older MB's -was Fo-matic NOW garage complaint?

2010-02-03 Thread R A Bennell
I once took my Chevy Suburban in to have the AC fixed. My truck sat on their
lot from 8 AM to 6 PM when I went and
got it and they never even looked at it. It did get dented by a shopping cart
that someone left on their lot and
that got pushed into my driver's front door somehow. The grocery store was not
connected to their lot so it
shouldn't have been a risk but I guess someone living nearby used it to get the
shopping home and left it on the
lot. Lots are never level of course for drainage purposes and carts move about.

I never went back there and they have gone out of business since. The fellow
who started the shop was good and I
got good service from him. He would lend me his personal vehicle if he could
when I dropped mine off. They were
just a small independent shop and did not keep loaner vehicles. He went off to
do other things and left it with a
manager who was supposed to buy it. Never happened and the whole thing fell
apart. I heard later that the manager
had a drinking problem and I suppose that was the nail in the coffin. I think
there is someone else in that spot
now and wonder if the original fellow was able to sell them his equipment for a
reasonable price at least.

The local dealer has this program as well, but they left my 111 coupe under
the hot July sun for 3 days while their veteran "specialist" attempted
to sort out a computer problem on a later model MB under warwranty. I
finally retrieved my car with no work having been done on it, and when I
opened the sunroof the gaskets tore off due to the hot sun's effect. When I
complained to the service manager, he had the gall to go on the attack
and accuse me of poor maintenance practices. Needless to say I took my
business elsewhere.

Mother is in a 6 story aparment building. I believe their electrical system is
OK but have brought it with me to
try it at my house. I have meters etc and can test for that sort of thing. Only
a 2 prong transformer of course so
no dedicated ground on it.

My basic thought was a bad capacitor as this sounds like the typical hum one
would get if trying to operate a car
radio that expects DC with a cheap transformer providing AC. Don't they
normally use capacitors as filters?

The local dealer has this program as well, but they left my 111 coupe under
the hot July sun for 3 days while their veteran "specialist" attempted
to sort out a computer problem on a later model MB under warwranty. I
finally retrieved my car with no work having been done on it, and when I
opened the sunroof the gaskets tore off due to the hot sun's effect. When I
complained to the service manager, he had the gall to go on the attack
and accuse me of poor maintenance practices. Needless to say I took my
business elsewhere.

2010-02-03 Thread R A Bennell
Most folks do not buy a car for the power or handling etc. They buy an image -
especially if it is a Jag or
something similar. They want to be seen in the car. That is all that matters.
They might learn to like the handling
etc and miss it if they swap to something lesser but they don't buy it for that
reason in the first place.

More DIY repair thoughts.

My mother's telephone answering machine is acting strange. It is a digital one
so no tape. It appears to work in a
normal fashion in the sense that it lights up, counts calls, will accept and
hold a message, incoming and outgoing
etc BUT it has an annoying hum. There is a backup 9V battery and an AC adapter
that plugs into the wall. Hum goes
away when the adapter is unplugged. A capacitor gone bad? Going to open it up

Thanks. I had already looked at that site. I can't help but think I saw another
more detailed list but who knows.
One sees stuff on the net daily and cannot keep it all in the mind.

The car I was wondering about is a mid 80's wagon. It is advertised as being
non registerable in Canada. That does
not fit with the 15 year rule but the I think that applies to cars from the USA
and this one might have come from
elsewhere. It is advertised as having a clean rust free body and the price is
right. Unfortunately, it is not
diesel. I might go and have a look and see what the seller can tell me just for
fun. It has the bundt style wheels
on it. It is almost cheap enough to buy it for those as my 76 still has the
steel wheels and hubcaps.

[MBZ] OT DIY repairs was Re: OT Are Toyota Owners Stupid?

2010-02-03 Thread Kevin Kraly
There's nothing like the good feeling you get after a successful DIY repair,
and it's increased proportionally by the amount of money saved. The dog
chewed the cord off my sister's Oreck vacuum cleaner just outside where it
exits the machine. Price for a new cord and labor was going to be $75, so
there it sat for nearly 2 years. It was too close to the case to put a
splice right there, and it would have looked ugly. I flipped it over,
removed the bottom screws, removed the connector to the motor and the
wirenut to the switch and extracted what was left of the cord. . I trimmed
back the cord to expose the two wires, stripped them, installed the cord
into the gromet that holds it into the case, cut the connector and installed
it onto the cord once again, slipped everything into place, reconnected the
motor connector and the wirenut to the switch and it was done!! The cord is
about 1.5' shorter, but that's it. It works just as well as it did, and I
only charged my sister $50 :D

Yes - Winnipeg. Manitoba is not quite so bad for salt on the roads as
other provinces but we still get a fair
amount put on the roads within the city - especially in intersections so
rust is still a problem. Not so bad as it
once was I think as cars are better undercoated etc but always an issue in
snow country.

comes to cars and we should not expect
that ads for cars will be realistic. People are trying to sell a vehicle

I agree with you in general. The collective knowledge about cars on this
list would stagger most people. I also
agree that many of us are looking for the cream puff with the POS price.
But, I am not totally ignorant of the
fact that most people do not describe every possible flaw in their car
when they are advertising it. I expect most
people to say something is in good condition. But, when asked to expand
on what that actually means, PROVIDE
DETAILS - BE SPECIFIC.

Of course, the car buying and car selling public doesn't know much about
cars. I read a review of a Ford Crown Vic
that someone posted on MSN. They were talking about all the problems
with

the car and then at the end they said,
"I knew I should not have bought a General Motors car. I will never buy
anything from GM again."

Sure, most of us are probably pretty picky. But, I have driven some
crappy cars before. But, I paid a crappy car
price for it.

I bought a 1990 Buick LeSabre last year for $900. When I called him, the
seller said, "Its pretty nice. Its got a
lot of miles. The paint is a little faded. It could probably use new
tires. Runs very well, and its $900."

I looked at it and tried to get him down on the price. He looked at me
and said, "Its $900. If you don't want it,
one of the other 10 people that called me about it will buy it."

I paid him the $900. I drove it for a few months while I located my next
car (I only bought it because my Mercedes
sold too quickly and I needed a car right then). Then, I sold it to my
neighbor. He still has it. He loves it.

Seems they have. I think any Benz starting with the current S Class
forward
would be a much improved car, over what it replaced, S, E, and C Class.
I'd
still pass on most models that have been around in production for more
than

5-6 years, like the CLK.

I was at the dealer again yesterday, to have a closer look at the new E
Class. I do like it, and it looks well bolted together. One thing I
really
hate about newer mercedes, is what they're doing, or how they're bonding
the

door skins to the frames! Even the new E seems to have this bead of silly
putty around where the skin wraps over the frame. And the spot welds!
How
about flattening a few of them out before putting the paint on, even if
they
aren't on an exterior panel. The plastic material also looked cheap to
me.

Mercedes knows how to make really good looking, and feeling plastic, but
they seemed to skip it this time. Seems to be a general trend with car
makers though. VW had a really nice, flat rubbery plastic, but the trend
seems to be toward the glossy stuff with a shine. Not that I found any of
the really glossy stuff, but it still didn't have a nice quality look to
my
eye. All the panels fit together really well, and the doors sound like
they
should. They had a nice E 6.3 there too. Not real keen on the added
trunk
lip, I would have preferred to see it formed into the truck itself. Bit
boy

racer in an otherwise elegant looking car. I never got the who thing with
carbon interiors, but that's just a personal opinion. Carbon is a great
material for fenders and other structural bits, but look best when
painted.

I no more get carbon as an interior fashion statement, than I would not
having any dye on the leather, or just putting clear coat right over the
metal so you can see what's made of metal.

Bunch of new S Classes too. Always great cars, and saw the new Hybrid
too.

All have the new front LED daytime running lights, and the new design real
light assemblies. I don't like the rear light assemble as much, as it now
seems over sized and doesn't fit the overall design as well. I loved the
rear before. Not sure if part of the change wasn't due to the cost of
colour matching the old nights to the bodies paint colour ?? Interior is
a

study in how interiors should be done.

They had brochures on the new SLS, but nothing on the floor. The old
Gullwing is still there, and I suspect it's a factory car, or on loan from
a

client. No SLRs this time, either they're all sold, or moved them to a
different dealer further downtown.

Re: [MBZ] importing to Canada?

2010-02-03 Thread E M
Don't quote me on this, but I was once told, that the W140 for the US and
Canadian markets are different. Different than just metric dials and
stuff. Apparently, the floor pan or chassis for the Euro and US cars was
different. The W140 for the Canadian market was based on the Euro chassis,
and so was tested in Canada, but not to meet US crash standards.

Not sure about now, as a lot of manufactures are moving more towards "world
models", but for years, things like min bumper impact speeds were always
higher in Canada.

Not sure about the 15 year rule currently, but I know there is talk, or was,
to try and tighten that up. A friend had a RUF porsche built, by RUF, and
sourced a perfect Euro spec car, 15 years old, for the conversion. That was
brought in, all legal and all paperwork done to satisfy the requirements. I
also know of a fellow who brought in a real first gen CTR, again, all
perfectly legal.

While there are often cheap deals to be had on imported cars, Porsche,
Mercedes, BMW, often they are not optioned as highly as those sold new in
the North American market. Also, many have lived very hard lives on the
Autobahn, so while you may find one with lower miles in general, they often
tend to be harder miles.

Generally, all cars here have to pass a safety and emissions test whenever
it changes hands. Emissions are good for 6 months I think, but if you make
a habit of it, you're considered a dealer. If a car is less than X number
of years old, and it isn't very many years, you are exempt from emissions,
and if the car is very old, exempt too, thought they are fiddling with
that. Safety is all the standard stuff, brakes, lights, wipers, no
perforation, etc. It's not to be confused with saying the car will pass a
month later, only that everything was within allowed limits at time of
inspection.

2010-02-03 Thread Rich Thomas

If the vehicle is too complicated for the average
(minimally-trained/knowledgeable/capable) driver, then that says something
about the manufacturer as well as their customers.

This is a crucial point and one that is much too frequently overlooked.

For any consumer product, usability should be paramount; but it's too
often, as a design goal, a distant third after the marketing and
engineering departments have their say about what the product should
look like and what features it should have. The user interface is
designed last, as an afterthought. This leads almost without
exception to products that are unnecessarily difficult to use.

Engineering types (and I'm including myself in this category, having
been a software engineer off and on for the past 10+ years) are
generally much too quick to blame the user. How often have you heard
"RTFM" as a response to a honest question about how to do something
complicated on the computer? The knee-jerk response, in other words,
is that it must be operator error, and if the user understood the
system better, mistakes wouldn't be made. A more accurate response,
often, is that it was programmer error, in creating software that is
too easy to use wrong and too hard to use right. A great example is
the default security setup in Windows Vista, which a lot of people
mocked (rightly) when the OS was released for requiring the non-admin
user to click through endless alert boxes each of which requested an
OK for the software to make system changes. Users end up clicking
mindlessly whenever a message pops up, and then get viruses or some
other security-related problem as a result. Guess what---it's not the
user's fault that happens, it's Microsoft's fault for designing a user
interface that encourages that behavior.

The issue is critical for cars because of the obvious potential for
death and property destruction if the operator can't operate the
product easily because of a poor user interface. Admittedly, cars are
complicated machines, and you have to learn to drive one; that's as it
should be. But as Jaime points out, expensive cars are far more
complicated today than they used to be, and often in ways that
directly impact the day-to-day driving experience (like start/stop
buttons, or purely electronic throttle and transmission control)
rather than having to do with peripheral functions such as the sound
system.

The other issue at work here is the lack of any kind of formal
standards for software engineers, and the poor theoretical
understanding (and lack of practical application) of processes that
would ensure that software works correctly before it leaves the
testing stage. A lot of people have been saying for a long time that
the technology of software development is way beyond our understanding
of how to use it right. (Google "software crisis.") A lot of people
have also been saying that sooner or later a "perfect storm" would
happen in which an accident that resulted in injuries or deaths could
be definitively blamed on poorly written software, and the public
would finally wake up and realize how much of modern life depends on
software working right. (I thought Y2K would be it, but it wasn't.
And don't get me started on the "I guess it was a lot of fuss over
nothing" Y2K backlash---that's like the guy who goes to the doctor
with chest pains; is told to eat better and get some exercise; does
so, and thereby avoids having a heart attack; then says, "Well, I
guess there was nothing wrong with my heart after all.")

Blame in the Toyota issue very likely rests squarely on the engineers,
product designers and testers at Toyota---not on "incompetent" drivers
(who are simply doing the best they can to use a poorly designed
product).

BMW offers all its cars with stick shifts in the USA as far as I know,
except for the Big Kahuna 7 series. Audi sells the smaller ones with
three pedals too. Lexus has the IS (BMW 3-series competitor). Acura
and Inifiniti each have a couple. Hyundai sells the Genesis coupe
with a stick. Even Cadillac offers a manual trans on one or two
models.

A fair number of luxury imports are now available with dual-clutch
automatics that can be shifted with paddles behind the steering wheel.
I haven't driven one, but this kind of transmission reportedly
responds more like a manual than like a traditional automatic---it's
like a slushbox without the slush.

Re: [MBZ] Wagon prices?

2010-02-03 Thread Allan Streib
What I've heard is that dealers will keep the cars that they know sell
well as long as there is not a major problem (crash history, unusually
high miles, etc). They might keep one or two more "exotic" cars to park
out front as attention-getters. But if a car has been sitting a few
weeks, it's off to the auction. They don't make any money holding
inventory.

I also know that little one-man used car lots open up and close down
here all the time. Often times they're closed within a couple of months
of opening. I think it's a very very hard way to earn an income.

Re: [MBZ] OT Are Toyota owners stupid?

2010-02-03 Thread Alex Chamberlain

(who are simply doing the best they can to use a poorly designed
product).
