I thought a few of you might of heard of Dame Edna, but suspected Norman

Interesting you should ask. Last weekend I was with a bunch of
high school and collage aged kids and made reference to Paul
Hogan, ("That's not a knife. This is a knife!"). Blank looks. I
said. That from the movie "Crocodile Dundee". No one had heard
of it. So at least with that group it would not do so well. *smile*

Regarding Edna Everage or Noramn Gunston - I rather doubt the
average person in the USA has any clue who they are.

Aren't insulin needles like #28 or #30?

Iirc, blood is drawn through a #19, and you need a #17 to draw oil-
soluble stuff into a syringe (i think it may be in sesame seed oil...)

#17 leaves a nice hole, btw...
I'd you are careful about insertion into the boot you may be able to
avoid coring the rubber... You need to insert it at an angle so that
the cut end is perpendicular to the rubber, and push the needle
sideways away from the "opening" while inserting it...

They have fancy-ass needles with a built-in jig that they use for just
the purpose of going through a silicone rubber membrane that covers
the end of a subcutaneous access port for a central venous catheter...

(I am not a doctor... Just the dad of a 3.75 yr old who has been in
remission for 1.5-2 yrs...)

Some cheaper options:

  http://www.add123.com/
  http://www.checkthatvin.com/uni2/index.cfm

These search the national motor vehicle title database.

If you just want to check if a vehicle has been reported stolen or
salvage, you can check the national insurance crime bureau site:

1960 220 Mercedes Benz 4 Dr FREE

Date: 2010-04-14, 12:01PM

I am giving away my 10960 Mercedes 4 door. I DO NOT HAVE A TITLE. I
brought it to restore it and never got around to it and didn't
register it.
The engine and transmission are good. Needed carbeurator work to
keep it

running. NO TITLE!! If you want the car just email me and I will send
you the address
to where it is. PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB THE TENANTS. The car is just
being
stored there. If you want the car you just take it! ITS FREE!!
Tires are

aired up, you
just need to check if it's in neutral. Car must be towed!!! Great for
parts! And remember...NO TITLE!!

* Location: BELEN
* it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other
  commercial interests

Re: [MBZ] Ball Joint Lube

2010-04-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I have nursed them along injecting tranny fluid in there. Keeps it
quiet for several weeks or more then it comes back.

LWB250 wrote:

Has anyone ever done the "inject lubricant into a dry ball joint" thing?

I ask because the wife's 2005 Mazda 6 has a couple of ball joints that are
getting noisy, and my local mechanic, who is ethical and honest as the day is
long, says there may be a dry ball joint that's making the noises we're hearing
intermittently, as everything checks out fine otherwise.

I have some insulin syringes that would be perfect for the job, but I'm
concerned about what sort of lubricant I could use that would be viscous enough
to go through the syringe as well as be compatible with whatever grease/lube
that's in there from the factory.

TIA,

Dan

Hi Alex

Finally got round to responding, apologies for the delay & don't
know if this will get through due to email issues - as you all know.
There is definitely a gremlin in the system that H can't find.

I've never heard of the Outback steakhouse (emigrated here 22 years
ago from NZ) & have been to Broken Hill where Mad Max Movies were
made.
Yes it was tragic what happened to Steve Irwin but in my opinion he
was the most irritating human being to come out of Oz.

Georgia (daughter) would like to know if any of you have heard of:
Dame Edna Everage or Norman Gunstan and
how popular were the Crocodile Dundee (Paul Hogan) Movies in the US.
The team have to do a skit at the FPS conference on Australia.

Have to agree why couldn't they have got an actual Aussie actor to
do the voice over for Outback Steakhouse commerical's there are
plenty of them in the US - that's shameful.

Fay

Yup. Outback Steakhouse, Steve Irwin, and the Mad Max movies pretty
much sum up all the average American knows about Australia, I think.

Having been to Oz and heard some really thick accents there,
especially in Tasmania, I wince every time an Outback commercial comes
on the TV---couldn't they have gotten an actual Aussie actor to do the
voiceover, instead of an American trying (and failing pitifully) to do
the accent?

Wooo, thanks! I regularly get numbers all sideways so I wondered if I was
reading it wrong...

I put new spark plugs in my motorcycle tonight, spec'd gap is 0.024-0.028 which
is just about as small as my gauge will do. Hadta look at the numbers several
times to be sure it was right.

Well, I know we have been through this all before but I had a brand
spanking new Chevy Vega in 1974. It was not much of a car but I drove it
about 3.5 years and the total depreciation was about $1400. I doubt I
will ever match that again.

When did they get rid of the 140ci aluminum engine and start with the 151ci Iron
Duke? Seems like I've seen 1976 Cosworth Vegas with the aluminum block and a 16v
head. I don't think the aluminum engine ever rolled off the assembly line with
iron liners, but you could buy liner/piston kits from JC Whitney.

2010-04-14 Thread John Reames
Hmmm... I've seen that... I had a replacement for a Hyundai that came
from "moog", and it was a hyundai joint. (marked "HMC"), and was
identical to the factory joint except the metal disc in the bottom had
an untapped hole to fit an included zerk into...

I wonder what would happen if you judiciously drilled a hole in the
cap and tapped a zerk into it?

Assuming you didn't get any swart inside the joint, the new grease
should push under the ball and flush dirt from around the upper side
to a location higher up in the boot...

A good used seat may be the answer, if you won't be carrying passengers

pushing the cover out from inside with the handle of the putty knife.
The leather was starting to tear.

I think I am going to see if I can find a used seat that is correct then

If I get a spare seat, maybe I can figure out if Jim's idea of

Right now I can't risk ruining the cover or the seat.

Unbolting the back and tilt assy from the seat base didn't accomplish
anything. It did show the seat back sprung into correct position in
relationship to the right side of the seat back. I had to push pretty
hard on the seatback to get it crooked enough to get the last bolt back
in.

2010-04-14 Thread Dieselhead
Put some M1 15-50 in with the needle. as a second coat, i"d use
molykote BR2 gun grease for the follow up. I put some M1 on my 124
joint to quiet the infernal creaking until I could get it replaced.
The boot was way far gone, so no needle was needed.

My Indy says that he has found that some ball joints, while still
sealed and retaining the factory lube, can develop rust on the
surfaces inside the joint, which then falls off and gets into the
spaces between the ball and socket. As a result they will make
noise, and even worse, do it intermittently.

He went over the front end of the car in detail as well as road
tested it and found no bad joints, torn boots, etc. This is why he
suspects one of the joints is dry.

Makes sense to me, as the noise that's been coming from the right
front has been intermittent and changes regularly as well. When I
drove the car on Sunday morning to take my eldest to work, the right
front was making noise consistently. When my indy drove it today
over his local "course" for checking suspension it didn't make a
peep, hence his diagnosis.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'm probably going to shoot
some goo into all three of the joints on that side and see what
happens

Am I reading this all wrong? If the limit is .787 that means anything
thinner than that (like .750) is junk... So if you had .800 you could turn
down as far as .787...

The big question is not how thick the old ones are but how thick the NEW
ones are. I'm given to understand the last decade or so has brought in
real crap for brake discs. My Dad runs a landfill and says they used to
get extra money for brake discs but now they don't.

Hi Gang,
I replaced my front discs a while back with a set of discs and
calipers

I bought from a fellow lister (got a great deal on a complete set of
calipers and discs, and pads from a 95 300D) - the old ones I removed are
approx. .750" and the limit according to the book is .787" (20mm) - but I
have not frane of reference of how much is normally removed when discs are
turned. I know it depends on the depth of any scoring but that's it.

If minimal metal needs to come off, would the .037" be enough to clean
up a typical disc? Plus, I wouldn't want the discs to be turned to .750"
and have 0 metal left as wear material.

I'm probably not framing this question very well - basically, I am
wondering if it's worthwhile to have a shop mess with trying to clean
these

up? Does any of this makes sense?

BTW, the ones I bought have performed flawlessly! ;-)

Any ideas?
Thx
Larry

Synthetic wheel bearing grease will work fine, but I suspect you will find that
the ball joint is dry because (duh) all the existing lubricant has leaked out
due to a bad boot or wear.

They start squeaking when they get dirt in them, so I would figure on a
replacement. More grease won't do anything about the dirt, which can't be
removed, and it will start knocking when it stops squeaking in a short while.

No, the seat moves every direction possible. the problem is that the
right side of the seat back is 2-3 inches further back than the left
side, It is very irritating for long hauls. The problem was
identified in the first post of this thread. Jim correctly
identified the cause of the problem as the "rod" that connects the
two sides of the seat back being off a tooth or two. I had taken out
the seat and determined that the slides we in correct relationship to
each other. Then Jim Identified the seat gear/rod problem.

I have been unable to get the seatback "rod" out of the seat, and the
CD references a handwheel (manual ) seat, whereas all the 124s sold
in Nort Amerika are electric.

The CD gives no clues about the electric seats, other than the
reference to "remove the flexible rod"

for the manual seat.

Does anyone have a spare 124 electric seat to take apart and give me
some ideas?

I am going to try unbolting the left side of the seat back and see if
that will spring enough to get the "rod" our of one side or the
other. I can't get the "rod" to move out of the seat gear otherwise.
I don't waht to drill out the rivets because I don't know if I can
get replacements Maybe all they are is 1/8 " pop rivets, but I don't
know for sure. But I don't need to replace the gear; I just need to
get the two sides to line up.

It is a puzzle, and I hate rubic's cube

Step 1. Remove seat back panel (91-190)

 Step 2. Remove flexible rod

But no clues about how this is done. It does indicate this is a
flexible shaft, not a solid rod as Jim dealt with.

Ah, yes, the lack of information in the W124 service manual.

I thought you were concerned with the seat moving on its mounting rails.

Anyway, the first page of 91-125 says,

Flexible shaft (2) . pull out of gears.

Perhaps you use the flexibility of the shaft to shorten its length so it
comes out of the gears and is then free of them. The point of this
section is the removal and replacement of the gears themselves.

Note that the handwheel (8) and cover (9) must be replaced following

How about laying a piece or two of plastic wrap (such as Saran) over
the surface of the paint?

Re: [MBZ] Off the topic: Australiana

2010-04-14 Thread Hendrik & Fay

Hi Alex

Finally got round to responding, apologies for the delay & don't know if
this will get through due to email issues - as you all know.

There is definitely a gremlin in the system that H can't find.

I've never heard of the Outback steakhouse (emigrated here 22 years ago
from NZ) & have been to Broken Hill where Mad Max Movies were made.
Yes it was tragic what happened to Steve Irwin but in my opinion he was
the most irritating human being to come out of Oz.

Georgia (daughter) would like to know if any of you have heard of:
Dame Edna Everage or Norman Gunstan and
how popular were the Crocodile Dundee (Paul Hogan) Movies in the US.
The team have to do a skit at the FPS conference on Australia.

Have to agree why couldn't they have got an actual Aussie actor to do
the voice over for Outback Steakhouse commerical's there are plenty of
them in the US - that's shameful.

Fay

Yup. Outback Steakhouse, Steve Irwin, and the Mad Max movies pretty
much sum up all the average American knows about Australia, I think.

Having been to Oz and heard some really thick accents there,
especially in Tasmania, I wince every time an Outback commercial comes
on the TV---couldn't they have gotten an actual Aussie actor to do the
voiceover, instead of an American trying (and failing pitifully) to do
the accent?
