Hi Allan,
How do you like the HF mig welder? They're on sale at the nearest HF store.

I fooled with it for a while longer tonight. Lacking any chisels small

enough to really get in there, I tried various screwdrivers and other
likely implements, all to no avail. Drenched in sweat and pissed off,
in a fit of anger I grabbed the Harbor Freight MIG and welded the wheels
to the axles. I may regret this at some point, but at least I can get
the grass cut again.

It's OK for the amount of use I give it. I bought the 220v model since
my garage already had an outlet in place. Mine has four power levels
(set by two toggle switches, one labeled Low/High and one labeled 1/2,
so e.g. Low-1 is the lowest setting, while High-2 is the highest).

It has a smoothly variable wire speed, but the wire feed drive is pretty
flimsy looking; I doubt it would stand up to professional use for a long
time which is probably why you never see these in a commercial shop.

But for my occasional needs to glue two pieces of metal together, it's
been satisfactory.  I should also say I have nothing to compare it to;
I've never owned or used any other welder.

As does my name-brand Hobart 135. I thought that would suck,
but so far it's not been much of a problem.

It has a smoothly variable wire speed,

Ditto.

but the wire feed drive is pretty flimsy looking;

OK, there it's different, the Hobart seems generally well-built.
It's certainly heavy enough, as it's old-school iron and copper.
I did OK for $50 (and many hours restoring it to functionality).

The thing I most noticed about the HF units in the store is the
feel/quality of the switch on the gun. Uck. The duty cycle is
usually notably low on these welders, too.

Like many of their tools, though, I'm sure it's WAY better than
no welder at all.

maybe it was just in my head but it seemed like the house was cooler

wonder why when I was sitting in my office upstairs and if the wife was

there. I guess it was because the smell would go up thru the ceiling in

We are now in Kingman Arizona about 93mile from Las Vegas.
Went to the meteor impact crater on the way that was something us, we all

Went through Flagstaff saw one fire, I got abit of altitude sickness but

from that the road trip today was trouble free.

Really enjoying the change in landscape as we drive Route 66.

Tomorrow Las Vegas, I am trying to convince Hendrik to go to the Liberace

2010-06-23 Thread Curt Raymond
Sounds remarkably like my Lincoln Handy-Mig. I'm sure I paid about twice what
you did but I'm quite pleased with it.

Last winter I was helping the local snowmobile club and they had me weld some
tabs onto a trail groomer. Got to use a $3,000+ Miller rig, took some noodling
to get the right setting but once I did it was easy to produce welds I was
proud of. Mine would have done it but not like that thing did...

How do you like the HF mig welder?  They're on sale at the nearest HF

But for my occasional needs to glue two pieces of metal together, it's
been satisfactory.  I should also say I have nothing to compare it to;
I've never owned or used any other welder.

[MBZ] Was lawn mower transaxle converted to WELDING

2010-06-23 Thread pm7088
I was a fairly competent stick welder, haven't had any equipment for 20 years.

I bought a cheap 110v MIG about 15 years ago, spend stupid money to get the gas
coverage bottle set-up. I couldn't weld crap with it! It was terrible, I gave
up and put in in a corner.
About 5years ago, I mentioned to a coworker. He convinced me to buy a roll of
flux wire. Shazam, I can weld again! It's dirty and you have to chip and wire
brush after each small pass but it works. The secret is that these little
machinnes don't have the power to melt the .035 solid wire and penetrate the
work. The flux cored wire is much easier to melt and will do the job, IF YOU
ARE PATIENT.
My favorite project is a 55 gallon BBQ on wheels. I stuck it together with my
MIG. Tossed it into my truck and went to a friends house where i 'Made it one
piece' with his cheapo stick machine. I made the drum easy to swap out (They
burn rust thru}. It is really dandy on top of being fugly.

[MBZ] I guess I can start putting my 140 diesel back on the road

2010-06-23 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I got all the parts from Rusty the other day. Decided to go with just
replacing the #1 rod so I have a new updated rod for that. Quite a
difference from the old ones. I will have to post pictures. Also got
the engine wiring harness. Now I just need to try to remember how it
all goes back together!!

Re: [MBZ] 300SD driveline thumping cure

2010-06-23 Thread Jim Cathey
OK I want to order whatever stuff might be necessary to deal with
this, as long as the boy is going to be down there working on it. I
need flex disks, bearing carrier, bearing? Anything else?

There's a driveline seal ring, IIRC. Goes over the centering pin.
I don't replace flex disks unless they need it. They're pretty
easy to replace as needed. The bearing is good to do while the
driveline is out, though, which it has to be to do the bearing
carrier. (A rubber part.)

Rudd must have stood aside as he knew he didn't have enough support within the
party.

We loved the Big Texan steak house, met a real life cowboy, pictures will be
posted for Wiltons judgement, and had the band play Johnny Cash with an Aussie
twist. As I said, a ex Marine took the challenge and I got a picture of the slab
of meat. I felt bad because later I talked to him and he said he chocked on a
large chunk, I should have advised him to spend time to cut that meat into tiny
pieces to make it easier to chew and swallow, instead I just wished him good
luck.
We stayed at the attached Big Texan motel and that was a real experience, remind
me when I get home to post pictures.
