Even simpler than a 240D, But the 240D is much nicer for 500 to
1000 miles per day.

[MBZ] ChowdahQ 2010: Huge success!

2010-09-11 Thread toms cat1

Congratulations to Dwight/ Karen and Curt /Angie (and Buster) nad Fred for
their efforts which enabled The ChowdahQ 2010 to be a great success! The
hosts were charming and gracious, the food was great, and the atmosphere was a
lot of fun. Not a discouraging word was heard. Great chowdah, great burgers,
great salad. Personally, the moose sausage was a first for me. You heard that
right: moose sausage!! Great stuff! :) Even the bribes to get a prize were
reasonably priced! Can't beat that! ;)
Kudos also to Burt and Lorraine (God, that is a beautiful car you have!) for
their work on the Judging, etc. Whoever was in charge of the weather, btw,
gets a salary raise for next year. Outstanding job by all! Speaking for
myself, I had a great time and I look forward to next year.

I loosen the top radiator hose from the radiator, and fill it till it won't
take any more after the coolant tank - it's slow to fill, but seems to get
most of the coolant into the head.

There is a great sub (USS Blueback) at the Portland, OR science museum. The
last diesel/electric sub to be in the fleet. One of my customers in the area
served on it, and I talked him into going on the tour with me one evening. He
ended up taking over for the docent and made the tour really awesome.

I've known three different submariners, and they were all whack jobs. I am
convinced that anyone who can serve on on of these things has got to be psycho.

Do you want to drain it completely or just fill with coolant? If you
want to drain it, there is a drain fitting on the right side behind
the engine mount that will drain the block. You've already got all
the water out of the radiator, so it's probably a good idea to go
ahead and drain the block as well. Put a piece of hose on the
fitting to keep water from spraying everywhere.

Once it's empty, close the drain fitting and pour coolant into the
tank until it stops emptying into the engine. Then squeeze the upper
radiator hose flat, crimp the small line to the tank from the
radiator shut, and release the upper hose. This will pull coolant
into the head. Keep cycling, adding coolant as necessary, until it
wont take any more. You will only get a gallon or so in by gravity,
and will add another gallon or so by "pumping" it.

There is a bleed bolt on the head, but getting it in and out and
getting it sealed with coolant leaking out is mess, the hose trick
works just fine.

Then drive it with the heater on full blast -- when the heater core
stops gurgling, fill the tank back up to the full mark -- I think
that's the seam midway down on the tank.

If you don't "burp" it like this, it will overheat for sure since
it's only gonna have about half the proper amount of coolant in it.

Re: [MBZ] head gasket set

2010-09-11 Thread Peter Frederick
There is no oil supply line gasket, it's a standard flare fitting in
the block. I don't remember a turbo line gasket, nor the o-ring
seals for the return line.

You should have the intake gasket set though -- intake to head and
crossover pipe, but not all sets have them. You won't get the large
o-ring for the turbo outlet, it's not supposed to have to be replaced
that often.

I got a set of pre-chamber seals too.

Not that many gaskets for a 603 head, after all. You do not need to
remove the turbo from the exhaust, so you won't get those bits.

[MBZ] 91 350SDL thirsty

2010-09-11 Thread WILTON
Finally found lower radiator hose leaking this morning; 'been suspecting it
before and looked at it many times during last several days; 'never could catch
it dripping or wet, etc. This morning I removed the cowling pan under the
engine and took the car for a drive; pulled back in the yard and immediately
crawled under the car to look for leaks; 'could find none. I got back in the
car and revved it to 2500 RPM and held it there maybe five minutes; shut it
down and immediately went under the car again; 'found lower hose (the one
between bottom of radiator and thermostat and a branch that goes to expansion
tank) gushing where branch is attached. Removed and replaced the hose and
thermostat today (parts rcvd from Rusty yesterday). 'Am now ready for some
tips on filling and burping the cooling system (just water for coupla days).
Any tips?

Some

Me too. I went through that boat once and up until then had no problem with

My experience too in a few different engines, both MB diesels and
lesser gassers.

If you don't want a new addition ON your driveway as well as TO the
driveway, avoid 0 weight anything.

Have you ever had an older (more than 15 years or so) MB diesel that did
NOT "mark its territory" at all?

My 300D has always dripped a little bit, not enough to noticeably affect
levels between changes, but a single drop will leave a mark on the
driveway.

Yorktown. They have lots of aircraft on display, a new one of some sort
(I forget) just arrived the last few weeks. I have not done the tour, but
see it often driving over the big bridge. They hauled off the destroyer
Laffey to have the hull fixed up, got that done, now can't pay the bill or
to get its berth fixed up, it is sitting at some other dock now running up
bills. There is a submarine there too, the Claghorn? or something like
that.

[MBZ] Okiebenz.com virus

2010-09-11 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I have the virus removed from the okiebenz.com website.
Apparently somebody hacked in and planted some sort of java script
or something that was set to download a virus from a 3rd party
site. It has been removed and all is well. I REALLY need to start
updating and maintaining this website.

I know you are in AZ, but what town?

As you may recall, the engine seized about a month before Curt's did. I'd
like to have someone who can use its 99% rust free carcass to come and take
it. I currently have all my W123 stuff in the back seat too.
I'd like to get $200in return mostly for the relatively new Michelins
that are on it.

If anyone is interested, I can send more details. I really don't want to
send it to the bone yard...yet.

Re: [MBZ] OT - WW-II carrier re-enactment in 1995

2010-09-11 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Yep, great military museum, been there more than a few times. Highly
recommended, great for kids and adults. They do sleep-overs for Boy
Scout/Girl Scout units, have special events / fund raisers (just had a
big VA gathering, USO has done stuff, some uber-rich even rent it out
for private events). If you go again, don't miss the movie, about 30
minutes of WW II stuff telling the "fighting Lady's" story.

Yorktown. They have lots of aircraft on display, a new one of some sort
(I forget) just arrived the last few weeks. I have not done the tour,
but see it often driving over the big bridge. They hauled off the
destroyer Laffey to have the hull fixed up, got that done, now can't pay
the bill or to get its berth fixed up, it is sitting at some other dock
now running up bills. There is a submarine there too, the Claghorn? or
something like that.
