2011-05-07 Thread Lee
I am off to work on a rental property.

No dermaters, peppers or eggplans, but I do have scarlet runner beans
and tomatillos getting ready for outdoor planting. Quelites are
volunteering and walking onions and garlic chives are plotting a
takeover of vacant garden areas. Fava beans have been direct seeded but
thus far have not poked their heads above ground.

We are in a severe drought and all outdoor watering has been banned. My
herbaceous friends will be making it on greywater and the
much-prayed-for rainfall this year.

Re: [MBZ] the OK Don 300D

2011-05-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Its not bad, but its a penny that keeps turning up. It is a small
world though, when I sold it the guys address seemed familiar.
Turns out he has this 123 that has been sitting in his driveway
for at least 5 or more years with the hood up, never moves. I had
stopped in to see if it was for sale a long time ago and was
always told it was not. Thats who has the white car now so it
will probably sit for years.

As sad day indeed, the OK Don 300D got sold again and left my driveway just

a little while ago. Any bets on how long it takes to come back this time?

[MBZ] OT: Well that explains it

2011-05-07 Thread Curt Raymond
Remember a couple weeks ago when I mentioned the check fuel cap on the Ranger
being on? Today I learned why. I was about to weld new safety chains onto my
snowmobile trailer when I noticed the spare tire was hanging way low under the
truck. I slid under and realized I have an issue... Theres a big pan that holds
the whole spare tire assembly and the front mounts had completely rusted away.
This is directly below where I'd had to repair rust damage in the bed a couple
years ago (that repair still looks mostly good BTW) so it shouldn't be a huge
surprise.

The evaporative canister lives on top of the front of this pan. The big drop
was only prevented by the wiring to the canister holding the front of the pan
off the ground. Unfortunately the hose from the tank to the canister goes to a
plastic fitting which is now broken, explaining the check fuel cap light. The
cap is tight but the tank vent system isn't...

A friend's brother works at a salvage yard and says to head on down on Monday
and he'll hook me up with a pan. The same friend is the owner of a shop which
will drill out the 12 big rivets that hold the pan in place for me. It'd be way
easier to burn them out with a torch but considering the gas tank is right
there...

[MBZ] Followup on the SDL Timing

2011-05-07 Thread Dieselhead
After I thought I had finished up the work on the SDL Timing, I ran
the car a little then found it had an air leak in the fuel lines and
bad glow plugs. I wanted to check the GPs before I put the intake on
but SWMBO had run off with the vehicle housing my good multimeter, so
I wasn't able to check them then.

So today was the day. Put in a new starter, then the GPs. Since I
didn't have a ALDA shim the last time, Today I had time to try to
create one out of something. I tried a copper seal from the oil
drain plug for the 603. It was too small ID and OD. Wondered if I
could stretch it out using a needlenose. pulling it oval, turn 90
degreed, then pull oval again. after may a dozen pulls, I rounded it
out, and found it was still a little small. So a few more pulls,
round it out, and it was a snug fit in the base of the ALDA. It went
together nicely.

So, to recap:
First: replaced ball joints and UCAs.
Then:
Replaced AC condensor
then had to move the timing chain forward a link to retard the valve
timing a tooth. That corrected the timing. Then I had to remove the
IP to correct IP timing.
While the IP was out, I put a new oring in the shutoff valve,
tightened the cover plates

New GL-5 antifreeze. WP and Idler are good!
Put in new Beru GPs in #3 and 4, as they are next to impossible to
change with the manifold on.
Found original fuel lines on the engine: prefilter to heater, and
heater to Main Filter. Marked 86

replaced fuel hoses in the engine bay.
Replaced the other 4 GPs
Replaced starter
Replaced a few hunks of vacuum hoses

So, a simple replacement of the condensor ended up in quite a bit
of work spanning several weeks (some delayed due to weeks of cold
rainy weather)

Road test today: Sounds way better. Runs smoother. no lifter
click. Takes off better from a start. Does not chirp tires. Does
not smoke on floored 0-65 MPH runs, so the ALDA is not over-fueling.
So far, fuel consumption appears to be better. Leak from shut off
fixed. Fuel leaks around IP appear to be stopped. Accelerates well
at 65 MPH. It is NOT a 240D! (They have their place) So far it
seems like it may get better mileage. Time will tell.

Seems like there may still be an air leak in fuel lines. Will find
out tomorrow. Probably should replace the one remaining line under
the hood and the hoses at the tank.

May still be able to use a little more ALDA shim.

[MBZ] 91 350SDL trim color

2011-05-07 Thread WILTON
Exterior color of my 91 350 SDL is black, #040. Can somebody tell me how to
identify the color code # of the grey trim on the bumpers and side lower trim?
'Need to order a spray can of it from Tower Paint. Is it with the regular
paint code on the data plate on the radiator brace? If so, which one is it?
