Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes

2011-06-25 Thread G Mann
As it happens, I own 3 GMC buses with 2 stroke detroit engines. None of
them sip fuel. Two are 40' long, one is 35' One has the 8V71 NA
engine, two have 6V92 TA [6 cylinder, V configuration, 92 cubic inches per
cylinder, Turbo, Supercharged, Aftercooled].. all have Allison automatic
transmissions. Normal fuel milage is 7.5 MPG. If I push the go peddle
hard I can drive that number down to 3 MPG easily at 75 MPH.

I bought them to convert to motor homes. Depending on finish choices for
style of interior and appointments, it's easy to spend more than $50,000 to
do a conversion. If you live in a motor home full time it might somehow
balance out the investment, if you only take it out for 2 weeks of vacation
a year on a couple trips... the numbers don't look so good.

There were only 1000 of the 4501 GMC SenicCruiser buses ever built and
although they are classic, the last one was built in 1954 and parts are
now scarce. To use one you first need to restore it to servicable.. THEN
convert it to a rolling house both pricey propositions.

Then again.. if money is no object have fun. You will be noticed every
place you go.
The old Senics are attention hounds, no doubt.

[MBZ] Tight pistons rear caliper GMC 1500 No M/B

2011-06-25 Thread Barry Stark
I have a '99 Sierra 1500 and I noticed that I got pretty much all the use of
the rear brake pads so I went to replace the pads. Caliper pistons were
pretty far out so used a c clamp to retract them so the new pads would fit.
Seemed like it took way too much pressure with the clamp to retract the
pistons into the caliper. I figured a seized piston and popped one out. New
style phenolic piston in an aluminum Caliper body. Bore and piston Don't
look that bad. Cleaned both up, even took a little 600 paper to the bore and
outer circumference of piston. Piston will only go half way into the bore
then it stops. This is without the piston seal in its groove. Too little
clearance piston to bore. What's going on here? Bore and piston look clean
but piston is still very tight in the bore. AFAIK these are original parts
from the factory. May be the reason the outer pad wore much faster than the
inner pad. Any thoughts?

Is there any pattern on the face of the piston, like a cross? Sometimes rear
calipers have pistons that are screwed back in vice pressed.

Can I blame my employer? When I first started the commute was only 80 miles
each way. Then the company got bought and it went out to 100, then I moved and
we went to 110, I guess I get a share of the blame too.
Then the company moved and we're at the present 115.

At that distance a 201 2.2l is a better commuter car than a 123. Actually in
very real terms the 201 is a much more refined car than a 123, the ride is
better, the steering more precise and the engine a boatload smoother, less
smelly, less smoky, easier starting and more efficient.

That said there was a 123 300D at my Indy's yesterday when I dropped off my
190D. It was there last month too and I'm tempted to ask about it, theres
something about the 123 look.

Of course as I say for camping or traveling with more than 2 people the 123 is
the bees knees. I'd also dearly love a 123 wagon. Someday maybe I'll con Fred

With the 190D I stop 3 times every 2 weeks for about 12

2011-06-25 Thread Curt Raymond
Guy at work has pretty much the same truck, I think his is a 2000 or 2001. His
eats rear brake calipers like they're going out of style. His mechanic says its
because the rear brakes don't do much and discs are overkill for the
application if you aren't carrying a lot of weight on a regular basis. He does
regular panic stops to exercise the rear brakes and make the sticking not so
frequent. Apparently GM has gone back to drums for rear brakes since then.

Sorry I can't help your actual problem, if your calipers are original based on
my friend's experience I'd say you've gotten excellent service.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Mortgages

2011-06-25 Thread Rich Thomas
I don't know what it was, that sort of detail is below my interest
threshold. It was for whatever the current amount is/was. 3 yr ago we
bought this place and I worked a coupla mortgage hawkers, and got Wells
Fargo to give me the best deal (it is fun playing those guys off one
another). A coupla months ago the woman calls me up and says she can
redo our loan to a better rate, take advantage of the low rates now, so
I say OK give me the details. Turns out it is something called HARP
which I think is some gubmint thing to refinance mortgages to get lower
rates. Whatever, doesn't matter, WF still holds the loan (turns out WF
does not sell off most of their loans, they do a good job up front then
hold on to them) but somehow gets the gubmint program. We get the low
rate for 20yr, one point or something, it is all rolled into the new
loan amount, turns out somehow for some reason we will get a check for
$385 next week after doing all this. Go figure. And they roll the
WindHail insurance (have to have that in SC) into the escrow, which it
was not before, and the whole monthly payment ends up being quite a bit
lower even with that. I guess I don't really care what all the details
are, I signed about 20 different papers, all of which appeared to be
exactly the same stuff I signed 3 yr ago, and that was that. Everybody
happy.

Our Merrill Lynch woman called about the same time, offering up
something similar. Difference was they would have to get a new
appraisal, the rest was all similar, and with the RE values in the tank
that would not have made for Happy Times. The WF thing did not need
that, it was just a loan rollover of some sort.

[MBZ] Auto Fire Extinguisher

2011-06-25 Thread Jerry Herrman
Going through my old boxes, I came across this device that appears to be a
diminutive automotive fire extinguisher with mounting bracket, possibly a
rechargeable one. One of you older types recognize this? It looks too small to
be of value in a real fire. When I turn the knob, I hear hissing. Given that it
is made of brass, it must be from years ago. Would look good in my 240D, maybe.
Can someone provide facts about this thing and how/when it was used? Doesn't
look it would come form pep Boys. More about the old boxes in a later
submission.

[MBZ] 124 rear window regulator repair

2011-06-25 Thread Max Dillon
I successfully used part number 210 720 00 42 to repair the right rear
window regulator yesterday.  The new part has the critical sliding portion;
the rest can be thrown away. I re-used the metal plate and white window
slide (goes in channel at bottom of window glass). Also used a 6mmx1.0 bolt
(10mm head) and nut to replace the rivet that had to be cut to get the new
plastic piece off of its metal plate. $12 from Rusty vs. $140 or so for an
aftermarket regulator assembly, I think worth the price.

It was a bit fiddly to get the cable ends back into their keeper. I had to
take loose the reel assembly from the motor to straighten out the cables,
which had gotten out of their tracks and fouled up. The cable is under
tension when assembled, so I had to loosen the motor from the frame to
release enough tension to get the cable back around all the pulleys.

The trick to getting the regulator in place and attached to the window was
to hold the window at a position about 3/4 down, move the slider on the
regulator to same height, and move the regulator assembly around to get the
white slider to go home. The upper screw could be loosely in place, but the
locking tab at the top was not in its locked position; that locking tab and
the bottom locking tab were maneuvered into place after the window was
attached to the slider.

[MBZ] Its good to have a parts car.

2011-06-25 Thread Curt Raymond
I mentioned in a previous missive about the fuel leak on my '78 240D that must
be fixed today so I can drive it to the airport (~65 miles each way) tomorrow.

Took a look at the situation, most of the fuel lines look new except the stubby
one from the see-through (primary?) filter to the hand pump. I'd bought 3' of
fuel line in preparation for this so I cut and installed a chunk. Kept poking
around and with the engine running realized the real leak was from the top of
the canister (secondary?) fuel filter. I cranked down the nut some more to no
avail. Dropped the filter and made sure everything was real clean when it
occurred to me this leak started soon after the last filter change, DUH!

Cleaning didn't help so I went to the '83 240D parts car and nabbed its bolt,
washer and filter thinking maybe the Car Quest filter wasn't of the quality a
Mann filter is. Turns out the aluminum washer was the culprit and although the
one from the '83 didn't look as good (bit of brown on it that won't wipe off)
it seals well and the leak is gone. This is a pretty easy leak to track as it
pools and then drips on the oil cooler lines.

Anyway a satisfying fix...

[MBZ] '78 240D AC and the mystery wire

2011-06-25 Thread Curt Raymond
While working on the fuel leak I spent some time looking at the AC, you might
remember the mystery wire conundrum. I wire brushed it and tried grounding as
somebody had suggested but that seemed to make no difference.

With the AC control on the compressor never does anything, I tried jumping the
pressure switch, that got the compressor turning. Then I suddenly remembered
this car had been converted (apparently at some expense) to 134a so I grabbed
my cheapo filler hose/gauge and got a reading on the low side of 10psi. There
was a bit of a can remaining on the gauge and it rapidly got cold so I let it
run in, then poked around a bit and found another can which went in. Once that
can felt light I jumped the pressure switch again, the compressor engaged and
this time stayed turning for a few minutes. Unfortunately the can ran out, it
was only 12oz so we're still low. I'll snag another can later and see if that
helps.

While waiting for the can to empty I FINALLY realized where the mystery wire
goes. It connects to a sensor on the backside (toward the passenger
compartment) of the thermostat housing. The '78 is a real crossover car and has
an old style thermostat housing complete with bleed screw.

So my guess is that this wire tells the aux fan to come on. Seem reasonable?

Re: [MBZ] My new used OM603 head

2011-06-25 Thread Max Dillon
Do I go at it from above or below? I don't know that I can find that for
sure, I just spent some time underneath spraying more nuts/bolts with
penetrating oil, trying to figure out all the connections to the turbo.
There is one large steel line which looks more like a drain line to me, runs
down at a diagonal to the block. FSM shows the oil feed line with a few
turns in it, the one I find is very straight.

I've got to remove the camshaft yet, and pull the two pins for the chain
guide. After that I'll take off the EGR stuff and maybe it will become more
obvious.

You need to disconnect it from the side of the block. It's a larger steel

Remove the fitting from the block and make SURE it stays out of the
hole and doesn't hang on anything.

I bent my old one all to and back, but otherwise it was easy.

Watch for broken exhaust manifold studs. The gasket is a spring type
and must be tightened to the correct torque, NOT until the nuts won't
turn. If you overtighten them, the gasket leaks and the studs fracture.

Re: [MBZ] 124 neutal switch

2011-06-25 Thread OK Don
I finally got time to mess with this car this morning. The symptoms are that
it won't crank sometimes while away form the house. I try shifting between
park and neutral several times while cycling the key from one extreme to the
other. Eventually it will start. I don't know if this due to the NSS or the
switch module behind the lock cylinder, as I have to exercise both to get it
to start. Of course, it will never do this at home.
So, to drive the car with some assurance of getting home again, I wired in a
push button switch between the violet/white wire that Dieselhead found over
the accelerator and a hot wire junction I found on the other side under the
dash. Now, no matter what position anything is in, I can spin the starter! I
mounted the switch at the farthest forward edge of the lower dash, just
before the under the dash kick panel. You can't see it without bending down
to look under the dash, but I can easily reach it while seated.

I put a jumper in the two uppermost pins of the female part, and the
starter works fine. Odd that I drove the car 1025 miles with many stops
with no problem, then could not get it started to leave the garage. Better
here than F.O.R.D. somewhere along the way.

At the three pole plug on the backside of the front firewall , the center
pin (male ) goes to the starter solenoid, and this appears to be common with
gassers and also W210. It is a handy thing to know. If you jump 12 v + from
the battery to that pin, the starter should fire. It bypasses the starter
 and NSS.

No need to remove the exhaust pipe that replaced the trap oxidizer,
as you CANNOT reach the oil line from above, even then -- it's tucked
up below the manifold.

Easy to see from underneath, and you should really drain the block
anyway to prevent getting coolant in the oil when you take the head off.

Subject: [MBZ] 124 rear window regulator repair

I successfully used part number 210 720 00 42 to repair the right rear
window regulator yesterday.  The new part has the critical sliding portion;
the rest can be thrown away.

The upper screw could be loosely in place, but the
locking tab at the top was not in its locked position; that locking tab and
the bottom locking tab were maneuvered into place after the window was
attached to the slider.

successfully used part number 210 720 00 42 to repair the right rear window
regulator yesterday. The new part has the critical sliding portion; the rest
can be thrown away. I re-used the metal plate and white window slide (goes in
channel at bottom of window glass). Also used a 6mmx1.0 bolt (10mm head) and
nut to replace the rivet that had to be cut to get the new plastic piece off
of its metal plate. $12 from Rusty vs. $140 or so for an aftermarket
regulator assembly,
I think worth the price. It was a bit fiddly to get the cable ends back
into their keeper. I had to take loose the reel assembly from the motor to
straighten out the cables, which had gotten out of their tracks and fouled
up. The cable is under tension when assembled, so I had to loosen the motor
from the frame to release enough tension to get the cable back around all the
pulleys. The trick to getting the regulator in place and attached to the
window was to hold the window at a position about 3/4 down, move the slider
on the regulator to same height, and move the regulator assembly around to
get the white slider to go home. The upper screw could be loosely in place,
but the locking tab at the top was not in its locked position; that locking
tab and the bottom locking tab were maneuvered into place after the window
was attached to the slider. -Max

Larry,

Can you see the two small holes where you insert the 2mm pins? They are at the
edge of the silver metal portion of the face of the lock. If you can see the
holes, you're ready to remove the cylinder lock, assuming you've got the trim
piece off and the key turned to position one. My FSM says that the
Escrutheon that you remove with the small screwdriver is only on the 201
models. The outer cap of the lock cylinder assembly, rubber coated, comes off
with the cylinder...

Bt, Wrong. I was able to remove the surrounding trim but rubber boot was a

The WSM says to remove the trim with a small screw driver but it’s more than
that. It’s more of a rubber boot that extends from the keyhole to the tumbler
housing. The WSM makes it look like the boot is just around the key hole.
Maybe the manual is for a earlier/later model?

Anyway, I put the surround back in place and I’m pretty sure the tumbler assy.
will last for a while.

Any ideas?

Not all of them were. However, I misspoke. My 8V71 engined bus is
supercharged, it does not however have the turbocharger setting on top of
the supercharger, thus in normal reference is called NA or Normally

The Fuel Mizer 2 stroke Detroits were not supercharged. Performance suffered
accordingly.

The Detroit 2 stroke diesel design dates from the 1930's and endured decades
of hard use with success until death by EPA .

To change tumbler in my 87 124, I merely remove the nearly rectangular cover
around the key assembly, turn key to position 1, insert ends of U-shaped
unlocking pins (use 2 separate pins if you want; easier for me to use one
U-shaped pin/tool) into the appropriate holes near outer edge of the
escutcheon 'til the pins bottom, jiggle the key a bit while pulling on
it, and tumbler assembly slips right out. Install tumbler is reverse.
(I made an unlocking tool from a piece of white coat hanger maybe 9 to 10
inches long; 'bent it into a U shape with equal-length legs and the base of
the U about that of distance between the two insertion holes in face of the
tumbler/key assembly; 'filed a wedge shape on inner sides of the tool at
ends of each leg to make the ends slide more easily up onto the locking pins
as they are pushed downward/inward to their unlocked position; removed
paint from first coupla inches at both ends of the tool to make it fit
insertion holes more easily.)

I'd have your guy do a full flush of the system to remove all the old oil
and goo-in-a-can, then recharge fully with new oil and refrigerant.

You'll have the system fully open anyways, so might as well.

hoping the mechanic in a can would get it. It was faint hope that went away

My R12 cans have price tags like $1.25 on them.

hose running from the evaporator to the dryer [pinhole] leaking.

Hose? Or hard pipe? Is this a sign of acid erosion from the
inside? That's what I'd expect from a R134a conversion,
after some hours are on it. If it is an erosion pinhole,
the integrity of the entire system would be suspect. If
it's just a hole in a rubber line, well never mind.
Likewise if it's a stress fracture, metal fatigue.

There goes $20. That's why I initially pressurized my first
unknown system (on the Ebola Fishtank) with propane, it was
as close to free as it could be and not be compressed air.
The test refrigerant is truly that, and 100% natural to boot.
(There are no O-rings in the York system, and the original
rubber hoses were still good.)

When I get back from Argentina I'll have my Indy do the hose, replace
the dryer, vac it down and charge. Any other suggestions while I'm at
it?

O-rings on the compressor manifold. (Yes, I know it's not really
a manifold on the R4. So sue me.)

When we lived south of Calhan, Colorado, the fellow who was the head of
