Wrong way to do that. You need to find the two tools for this job -- or the combination tool. It screws into the hole where the injector goes and has a wrench that fits in the slots to unscrew the locking ring and a slide hammer to pull the pre-chamber out. DO NOT use a hammer on the end of the pre-chamber on the other side of the head in an attempt to drive them out. You will surely flare the end, making it a grinder job instead of a slide hammer job. You can improvise the toos - - weld some table to a bar to unscrew or weld some tabs to a large bolt that slips in as a tool to unscrew the locking rings, and weld a bolt that fits into the injector thread (or an old injector body) to a slide hammer to pull the pre-chambers. They make spring compressors for this purpose. I like the big clamp style, like KD 380/383/385. Mine's an old 380 IIRC. Remove keeper with dental pick and small magnet. Removal is easier than installation, it can be a bear getting both halves simultaneously completely installed. The last valve job I had done, I didn't check the keepers when I got it back from the machine shop, they'd gotten half a keeper one notch from fully installed and I noticed it as I was installing pushrods and rockers, AFTER I'd bolted the head to the back cylinder bank on a transverse V-6. Would have been a one minute job to fix it if I'd found it before I put the head on the engine. Had to fill the cylinder with rope, run the piston up to hold the valve closed, and use one of those little spring compressors that looks like a battery terminal lifter, all while stretching to reach back there. If you just want to remove them, sometimes you can get away with putting a deep socket over the spring seat and whacking it with a hammer until the keepers pop out. Once you get the rhythm, you can probably get them out in 1-3 whacks each. Keep a firm hold of the socket, it'll jump pretty good when the keeper falls entirely out and the spring extends fully. I've learned more about MBZ wheels today than I knew existed. Grant, was it you who mentioned a few weeks back that you had a set of 15 or 16 inch Centra wheels from the '80s in storage? If so, those were probably meant for a 126 car and hence will fit your 123 if you get the right lug bolts. (And if you don't want those wheels, I still want to buy them from you...) Re: [MBZ] Pre-chambers
I had a precchamber ring puller made ar a machine shop, then finished it myself. THe thread pitch inside the ring is 2mm. As I recall we used a 1 dia rod, maybe a foot long. Cut the thread on one end, and welded a couple of big nuts on the other end. After I brought it home, I drilled a 3/8 hole through the threaded end, then used a 3/8 mill cutter in a drill to make the hole about 3/4 long by 3/8 wide. Then I cut the end off a small punch made from 3/8 square stock. This gave me a hard piece of 3/8 by 3/8 by ~1 1/2 to fit in the slot. To use: put one ring you screwed up by using a chisel on it on the threaded part. Screw the rod into the prechamber. Drop the square stock in the slots of the ring. screw the other ring down onto the square stock. Use a big wrench to unscrew the ring. Repeat as needed. After the rings are out, use the prechamber puller. It is also made from a foot or so of 1 rod. One end is threaded to fit the prechamber That is a 1mm pitch. The other end has a 5/8 UNC thread to screw onto the normal slide hammer puller. I had the puller made at a machine shop, and borrowed a slide hammer initially. Later, I got a 2 foot chunk of 5/8 rod, threaded the end, then welded a big nut on the other end for a stop and about 8-9 more 5/8 rod for a t handle. I found an old JD 2 cylinder wrist pin that weighs 4-5 lb and used that for the sliding hammer. I also used it once with a 10 lb weightlifting weight, but the wrist pin works better. Also, it is much easier to do this with the head still on the engine. Even the cast iron heads move around a lot while you are trying to pull prechambers. Hoping to get some beer money, I need to get the pre-chambers out of the cracked head from my wagon so I can take it to the aluminum recycler. How to get them out? BFH? I removed the locking rings with hammer and chisel, and beat on one for a bit. Pounded it flush, but now it doesn't want to go any further. Max -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Kaleb, et al. The 190DT is a blast to drive. Reasonably fast, nimble and comfortable. Relatively easy to fix and parts are available. I get about 30 in the winter and about 31.5 in the summer. 34 once when I tooled along at 60 on cruise control. With the correct tires 2950 rpm equals 80 mph. I especially like the ability to accelerate up hill. What does yours need to be roadworthy? (Besides time and money). Fred Moir Lynn MA Diesel preferred On 7/4/2011 6:15 PM, Kaleb C.
