Reserve not met at a high bid of $8,000. Interesting. I would think
there would be more interest in such a rare car. You'd be virtually
guaranteed to be the only one at any show, whether you wanted to
restore it or keep it as is in the barn find category.

I'd seen only one picture of one of these before Hendrik posted this
eBay listing, and it was a small, blurry black-and-white photo from
the rear that could just as well have been a Tatra. The rear-engine
cars don't even merit a picture in Frank Barrett's Mercedes-Benz
Buyer's Guide, just a paragraph commenting that with an iron-block
straight-four and swing-axle rear suspension the car was a handful in
corners.

The flasher in my '81 SD had quit and I just replaced a couple of the usual

When it gets super hot, my turn signal stops flashing. Is this more
 likely
to be caused by the flasher relay or the rocker switch in the console?
When the temp. cools down everything is back to normal.

Re: [MBZ] DC

2011-08-04 Thread Dan Penoff
If you go to DC, two words:

National Archives.

I used to visit DC several times a year, and I always started my visits at the
National Archives so I could see the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

After that it's all downhill.

Of course, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial are both
must-see places and are open 24/7. Amazing how many tour buses pull up to the
Lincoln Memorial at 2:00 am!

If you are there during the day, the Air Space Museum, of course, but be
prepared for the crowds.

Drive or walk by the White House (you can only approach it on foot, as
Pennsylvania Ave. is closed to vehicles in that area) and of course, see the
Capitol.

DC will be a zoo this time of year, so if you do go, don't be in a hurry!

I always liked the Metro stop in Georgetown, with one if the longest escalators
you have ever ridden, but then again, it doesn't take much to entertain me

 Hi Kaleb,

I agree with Andrew's suggestions about the Mall, with the additional
suggestion that you not miss the Lincoln Memorial. The scale of it is
amazing, both the Lincoln sculpture as well as The Gettysburg Address, and
his Second Inaugural Address which are carved on the huge inner walls. From
the rear Portico, you can see the Eternal Flame on JFK's grave across the
Potomac in Arlington Cemetery; from the front you see the Vietnam Memorial
on the left, and the line of sight down the Mall... the Reflecting Pool,
Washington Monument, the center of the Dome of the Capitol, and RFK Stadium
in the far dstance are all on a center line. There is a building height
restriction in DC so that nothing interferes with this view.

The boys will love the Air and Space Museum especially, but all the Museums
are worth whatever time you can afford to spend. Go to Georgetown on Friday
evening and take a stroll along M Street and up Wisconsin Avenue. It will be
 teeming with life.

Interestingly enough, I will just miss you. I am driving down with my son
Friday to a big BMW show (Bimmerfest East) in Aberdeen, MD on Saturday, and
staying in Georgetown on Saturday and Sunday night.

 Enjoy your trip.

Yesterday I went to the Air Space museum at Dulles Airport. Awesome.
THe one in town is very cool too, but if you go there, park out
somewhere and take the metro in (then you can do all the other stuff
too), traffic is crazy and there is no parking anywhere. The one out
there has a shuttle, SR71, and all kinds of other cool planes and
rockets and stuff.

$15 to park, entrance is free

In general traffic is a mess morning and evenings, midday it is
relatively tolerable but still heavy and stop and go in places. Our

Just be sure to check the schedule, as the Metro does shut down at night. I got

At some of the outlying stops. Problem is that they fill up with
commuters, but you can check. Metro is easy and pretty quick to get

The kids would love the Natural History museum, lots of dinosaurs and

Check their web site and I am sure they identify them.

[MBZ] 201 HVAC

2011-08-04 Thread Jim Cathey

Anybody have any in-depth experience with the early ('86) 201 HVAC
controller? Mine refuses to turn off the water valve so it's
always heating, and I've 100% proven that it is the HVAC box
that's not activating the vacuum solenoid, everything downstream
of there works perfectly if it's jumpered manually. The only
other symptom is that the automatic AC compressor setting is
equivalent to off, you have to use the ON/DEF AC button to turn
it on. Other than that the system seems to be working properly.

I've followed my own checklist to ensure that all the inputs to
the unit are reasonable, specifically the four analog inputs
(3 temps and the blend flap feedback pot) appear to be OK.

A junkyard unit (spare) does _exactly_ the same thing.
Coincidence? Unrecognized external problem? Common failure?

I've resoldered it, and dug far enough into the thing to prove
that it's not a fried output. (If I ground the - input of
the op-amp that ultimately drives the water valve it will engage
the valve and turn off the auxiliary pump, as it should. It's
a control problem of some sort. On the bench the blend flap
and AC control outputs work, and react to the external inputs
and the control dial. Just no heat-off ability.

There is some sort of tour bus setup (or at least there was then) that

The kids would love the Natural History museum, lots of dinosaurs and

Re: [MBZ] 201 HVAC

2011-08-04 Thread Curt Raymond
I have several of these with the following behaviors:

Full heat all the time
Won't turn on AC
Won't turn on heat

The one in my car does a pretty good job but reacts slowly.

Seems like they fail all sorts of ways.
I'll send you my box of spares if you want. If you can make 2 of them work
right send me one and we'll call it good. If you can only make one work right
keep it for yourself. If you can't make any work, add them to the scrap pile.

[MBZ] Question on assembly order for OM617 balancer

2011-08-04 Thread Allan Streib
I have all the parts (thanks Rusty) for replacing the balancer on my
'79 300SD (W116).

I consulted the engine service manual job 03-340 and several questions
arose. First there is a footnote that states when the balancing disc
is renewed, static balancing is absolutely required.

The balancing discs are not currently available new, and Rusty indicated
that there was no foreseeable availability on them. So he arranged for
a used one, which I assume would already have been balanced correct?
There are drilled-out areas on the perimiter that would imply this.

Do I need to worry about trying to do this static balancing?

Secondly the manual states that when removing the balancing disk to mark
its position by making punch marks on the disk and the crankshaft.
Since the disk was already removed by the PO's mechanic, and I'm not
putting the same disk back anyway, does this really matter?

Third, Rusty included the woodruff key for the crankshaft gear, but
reading the remove/install descriptions of for the balancer it does not
say anything about removing the crankshaft gear. Can I just leave that
alone?

Any thoughts on any of this?

Agreed. My rear muffler fell off on my trip to Detroit. The sound isn't
too bad, sounds kinda cool actually. The fumes in the cabin absolutely
suck! Have too ride with the windows down or get a headache from diesel
fumes. A piece of flex pipe out the back would have fixed that. Too bad I
didn't think about doing that on the road.

Re: [MBZ] DC

2011-08-04 Thread Tim C
You will spend money in DC. I assume you already have a hotel by now. Park
outside the city, Metro is nice, cheap, and believe it or not the people
working there were pretty helpful.

Leave knives/guns at hotel, they don't like you to have defensive weaponry
in DC. Water only in the Smithsonians, no soda/food unless you are really
really nice (like me :) and they let you promise to keep it in the bag.

I suggest you (Kaleb) go to the Washington Monument at 730 in the morning
(take a water bottle), wait in line, get tickets for the family (max 6 I
think) for just after lunch time. Have Regina meet you at 9:30 at the
Federal Triangle metro stop, earlier and she won't be able to wrangle the
children in traffic. [Triangle is better because there are shops and whatnot
where you can buy food/drink, plus lots of park-y stuff you can wander
through, while you wait.]

Pick a couple Smithsonians, they are free: Air and Space was popular with
both kids, and American history has lots of trains and cars out so son was
in heaven. My kids didn't dig Natural History so much, depends on the kids
I guess. And the Hirschhorn or Art if you or Regina is into it, but our
kids just wanted to run through and identify everything - Hirschhorn is
not kid-friendly if you are prudish, either. Hit whichever one you pick
that is more distant from the Washington Monument for the morning, then the
other after.

For food I liked the Smithsonian Art cafeteria - in the basement - but I
think we got there at just the right time. If you are a hot dog kind of
person there will probably be vendors on the Mall.

We have gone for a couple years over 7/4 but never see as much as we want.
If you can get half of what you want done count yourself lucky, you're
doing better than Congress. :) Hope you have a great time!

Best,

-Tim

I still remember the tomb of unknown soldier at arlington. The
memorable stuff was the detailed explanation offered by the soldiers -
impressive beyond expression. They do all their spit/shine
themselves, rain/shine, cold/heat. More to be said, but impressive
military contingent of perhaps 2 dozen soldiers - very special duty.

Yeah, yeah - see the air/space too. They had the betsy ross flag
being refurbished when we were there 8 years ago. Someone said the
holocaust, but i couldn't bring myself to see that monstrous display -
 just too heavy.

See the whitehouse tour office - i doubt they have that anymore. But
one time we did that, a guy acted as Thomas Jefferson and that was an
interesting conversation. I think you gotta have invite to see the
whitehouse, whereas 22 y ears ago we just waited and then our turn
came and they gave tour. I don't remember any of that tour.

[MBZ] Ethanol could be risk in U.S. pipelines

2011-08-04 Thread RELNGSON
Ethanol could be risk in U.S. pipelines
by Staff Writers
Washington (UPI) Aug 3, 2011

Plans to use existing U.S. pipelines to carry increasing ethanol production
poses the problem the fuel can dramatically degrade them, researchers say.
Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology warn that
ethanol, and especially the bacteria sometimes found in it, can worsen
fatigue crack growth rates by 25 times the rate in air alone.
Researchers evaluated fatigue-related cracking in two common pipeline
steels exposed to ethanol mixtures, including simulated fuel-grade ethanol and
an
ethanol-water solution containing common bacteria, an NIST release said
Wednesday.
Substantial increases in crack growth rates were caused by the microbes,
NIST researcher Jeffrey Sowards said. These are important data for pipeline
engineers who want to safely and reliably transport ethanol fuel in
re-purposed oil and gas pipelines.
The tests were performed on common pipeline steels, which are alloys of
more than a dozen metals.
Ethanol, an alcohol that can be derived from corn, is often utilized as a
gasoline additive for its oxygen content and octane rating.

I'll send you my box of spares if you want. If you can make 2 of them
work right send me one and we'll call it good. If you can only make
one work right keep it for yourself. If you can't make any work, add
them to the scrap pile.

Hey, I'll take that deal! We're headed out for a week's vacation,
but after we get back...

Seems like these things are a lot less reliable than
the two-piece ones in slightly older cars. Yes, their PB
arrays were less reliable, but they were also easily fixed.
I never had a Temperaturregler fail. I think I have one
spare in the garage just in case, since we have five cars
that use that system. (All five, btw, are working, or at
least were working when last tried.)

So far this thing's kicking my butt.

I know our W115 220D/8 had electronics in the flasher, because it was a
part of the four-way flasher switch and was a sizeable box with a relay.
When it stopped working, I took it apart and fixed it.

Does the W123 have electronics in the flasher, too? I thought it was the
