Re: [MBZ] Diesel Engine Exhaust Causes Lung Cancer, WHO Agency Says
Without getting into a discussion that could rival oil and tires, consider that if diesel smoke caused as much disease as various interests imply, there would be a well defined epidemic; especially in major air polluted cities. The reason there isn't may be because the lungs have their own cleaning system which does a good job of removing particulates and other substances unless they are overwhelmed by concentrated smoke or vapors going directly into the lungs as is the case with tobacco smoke. One type of lung cell produces a constant stream of sputum that is propelled upwards by another type of cell which has little fingers or whips called cilia. Without realizing it, people periodically swallow small amounts of this sputum which has collected whatever particulates and foreign substances that have been inhaled and it is harmlessly excreted as part of the feces. This amounts to about 10 ml (1/3 oz) of sputum per hour in most adults. If a persons lung cleaning system is constantly overwhelmed, which is usually indicated by frequent coughing, they can increase the flow of sputum by taking an expectorant; the commonest being over-the-counter guaifenesin 400 mg at any drugstore. Walgreens brand is called Mucus relief. The human body has several barriers against cancer and there are several substances and techniques that will possibly strengthen these barriers, but that is another, often controversial, subject. Re: [MBZ] Diesel Engine Exhaust Causes Lung Cancer, WHO Agency Says
I don't know whether diesel exhaust causes lung cancer or not, but it is sorta reasonable to think that inhaling nasty stuff does not do you any good. Diesel particulates are/have nasty stuff, so not surprising. It is pretty clear that for those who have lung cancer, cigarettes are the primary cause (absent things like workplace exposure to nasties), though some people just develop it with no other apparent significant environmental risk factors. The interesting thing about cancers is that 1) if you don't smoke or drink heavily, and get checked for hepatitis, and eat well and exercise, your likelihood of most cancers is pretty low (breast cancers have some genetic and racial dispositions), and 2) given that many other diseases (save congenital stupidity) have either been eliminated, cured, or managed well (at least in the civilized world), cancers have now sorta moved up the list of stuff that will kill you, but mostly later than all those other diseases would have killed you in the past. At some point we are all gonna die, something is gonna cause it, and it will likely be something that is not treatable or manageable at that time. Or will cost too much, but that is another discussion. Of course we all know people whom we can cite anecdotally who did all the right things, and still developed a cancer and died, but those folks are still sort of a smallish subset of all. I have friends who fell in that category for no rhyme or reason. Then there are those who eat crap, smoke like chimneys, drink like fish, and live to be 100. Go figure. The good news is that a lot of cancers are generally preventable (or risk-reducible, perhaps more accurately), and many are now treatable and manageable with increasing 5yr survival rates. Oh, and the WHO is a quasi-governmental bureaucracy, and we all know what bureaucracies are all about. Especially international bureaucracies, which are like a cancer themselves. --R (who gets this all second hand) On 6/13/12 10:04 AM, Larry T wrote: It seems *_everything _*causes cancer --- ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

On that note, I've noticed that location is very important. For example, in California, nearly everything is labeled that it causes cancer. [MBZ] 1972 220D Lost Key $500
I spotted this one on the local Craigslist just a few miles from me. The car is all there, it’s been parked for 5 years, but ran before he lost the key. He got the VIN coded key, but somebody changed the iggie at some point so the key doesn’t work. He disassembled it enough to know that he couldn’t fix it himself. Are these cars like the W123/126 in the way of ignition lock removal? Is it possible to hook a battery up and start it without the key using just the start pull lever? If this one’s worth buying, how much should I expect to pay for having it fixed if it’s not a DIIY job? A friend at church, who was the Director of the Colorado Springs Utility Division, said to get a bag (2# ? about 14 x 10 x 6) of brewers yeast and flush that down the toilet. Are these cars like the W123/126 in the way of ignition lock removal? Pretty much. Is it possible to hook a battery up and start it without the key using just the start pull lever? Not really, in that the key is _supposed_ to interlock the knob. But sometimes that interlock is broken... However, if you get under the hood and can disconnect the knob's cable and run the IP by hand, and hotwire the glow system, and the starter, then you should be good no matter what the key says about it. Alternator won't charge, though. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

On Wed, 13 Jun 2012 16:20:22 -0700 Kevin Kraly kr...@comcast.net wrote: Are these cars like the W123/126 in the way of ignition lock removal? Sorry, Kevin, I don't know; it's been a long time since I worked on the W115 we had. I would guess, though, that it would be somewhat a similar process of turning the key to a specific position and inserting a wire/pin in a hole to be able to remove a shield cylinder/plate. Hopefully, someone that currently has a W115 will chime in. Is it possible to hook a battery up and start it without the key using just the start pull lever? I do recall one time driving our '72 220D/8 and wondering if it would run on no electricity. In a deserted part of roadway, I punched the Pull Knob to turn the engine off and allow the key to be turned to off. I then pulled the pull knob out and it ran just fine -- I couldn't steer, of course, but it ran just fine. I quickly unlocked the steering and drove on. So, it will be possible to have it run. Most likely, though, you will find that the starter won't run when you pull the Pull Knob all the way out (actually, I can almost guarantee that). You will have to have someone short the top, battery cable terminal on the starter solenoid to the middle terminal on the solenoid with a big screwdriver to have the starter engage and turn the engine. If this one’s worth buying, how much should I expect to pay for having it fixed if it’s not a DIIY job? I would expect you will have to have the lock drilled out (the armor plate in front of it, actually) and then replace the lock and armor plate and anything else that was damaged. Road kill doesn't make any sense to me. I use RidX a few times a year, when I think of it, and have the tank pumped every few years. No trouble so far (knock on wood) other than a failed pump float switch one time. I'm pretty careful about not letting a lot of trash get into the system. Have a good lint filter on the clothes washer drain, no disposer (all food waste goes in the trash) and only paper that gets flushed is toilet tissue. Re: [MBZ] OT - septic tank treatment
I was told by several people to not put anything in the septic system, and so far it's worked fine (10 months). The PO said they were pouring buttermilk down the drain, per Mother Earth News. I also removed the disposer when I replaced the kitchen sink - most food scraps go to the worm bin(worm ranch). Tell me more about the washer lint trap. Is it a sock like thing that goes into the drain pipe - that you have to pull out and clean frequently? How does Romney, who didn't win against McCain make sense? We are also coming to grips with the stupidity of a campaign built on a platform of we can't let this guy be elected for another 4 years. That does not constitute a platform. Re: [MBZ] 1972 220D Lost Key $500
I spotted this one on the local Craigslist just a few miles from me. The car is all there, it's been parked for 5 years, but ran before he lost the key. He got the VIN coded key, but somebody changed the iggie at some point so the key doesn't work. He disassembled it enough to know that he couldn't fix it himself. Are these cars like the W123/126 in the way of ignition lock removal? Pretty much the same, except the pull is part of the unit. Is it possible to hook a battery up and start it without the key using just the start pull lever? Not the best approach. Put in a good battery. Disconnect the push/pull cable at the inj pump. (this will allow the lever on the pump to move from the off position (Forward) to the run position. (center) you can also work the lever front to back to make sure it goes to the center when you are not pushing one way or t'other. This is a check to make sure the rack is not sticky. If you have a remote start switch or a helper, hold the lever back for starting. That will give it full fuel. Be prepared for the governor to jam it forward when the engine starts. Don't get pinched. I've always been ok just leaving it in the run position. If you have a remote start switch, use it. If not jump the bat+ terminal (big one on top) on the starter solenoid to the solenoid coil terminal (small one) Dem Dissels don't need no 'lectricity. to run. Alternative is to disconnect the push pull cable at the IP and push or pull the car. (Better have a straight shot, as the steering will be locked.) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

OK Don okd...@gmail.com writes: Tell me more about the washer lint trap. Is it a sock like thing that goes into the drain pipe - that you have to pull out and clean frequently? Yeah pretty much. It's called a Filtrol 160. Basically looks like a cartridge-type water filter housing, with a 160-mesh sock inside. We do a fair bit of laundry, and it traps about a fistful of lint every week or so. A bit messy to clean, and I'm not sure how much it ultimately helps, but it's well made and works as advertised.
